I don’t think it’s true at all that the reason people want schools to close, is because they are afraid for their kids @BigChocFrenzy. That’s certainly not my reasoning. From what I understand healthy kids are low risk. We need to be stopping the spread for those that are vulnerable. Closing schools and work places wherever possible will help slow/halt further transmission. Other countries have done it, without healthcare grinding to a halt, so can we with planning

WingingItSince1973 · 11/03/2020 23:23

I'm fully prepared to have my 4 year old gs at home if his school closes so my daughter can work for as long as her company stays open. What worries me though is the children from less fortunate families who rely on school as their safety net. It's going to be a minefield keeping these children safe.

Freezingold · 11/03/2020 23:24

@FacingtheAbess Grin that cheered me up!

brainfogg · 11/03/2020 23:24

@FacingtheAbess that did actually make me LOL
‘VIOLENT’ 😂

SubjectMatterExpert · 11/03/2020 23:24

We haven't always been like this have we?

@Dusty01, I think we bloody have! See colonialism

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2020 23:25

BCF they should give parents options to take kids out of school.

I would seriously consider pulling my son out if I legally could at this point.

As it is he has a party on Sunday to go to. I really don't want to go for a variety of reasons due to the mum. It's for 60 kids and their parents. I'm contemplating pulling out tomorrow if they say we are in the delay phase and to practice social distancing. But that puts me in an awkward position because all the kids go to school together and that will be her argument. Thing is at school there aren't all the parents nor are they dipping their hands into shared food bowls.

I'm kinda at a loss as to how exactly to navigate it.

Being around this woman has caused me severe stress but she's a neighbour and her dad (who is disabled, morbidly obese and has a serious heart condition) is a neighbour. She's prattle on weeks ago about how her dad was worried and told her to avoid certain places yet her logic about whats high risk is somewhat, how can I put this, 'misguided'. So I can't for the life of me work out why she still wants to go ahead anyway, given the risk to her dad (she's his carer).

@Dusty01, I think we bloody have! See colonialism

Sorry but that is Hysterical. In the better sense of the word.

On that note I am going to bed

SpencerReidsMistress · 11/03/2020 23:28

Well had my Tesco delivery today and no toilet paper! I don't even want to stock pile, I just need toilet paper. Stop stocking up on toilet paper people!

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 23:28

@random18 I believe they do plan to tell older people and the more vulnerable to isolate themselves or at least really minimise interaction. Detailed practical guidance is being drawn up. It's the timing that is key as I understand it.

If they do it too early they will have to keep people isolated for a very long time which would be very difficult and would risk them choosing to un isolate themselves at a time when the risks are higher. Leave it too long and you miss the boat.

I think it will be a good few weeks yet if they are not anticipating the peak for a couple of months.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 11/03/2020 23:28

A very public school attitude maybe?

Yes, all this talk of nudge theory and the idea that the British public is so pathetic that if told they can't go to a football match because of an epidemic that they'd all 'just go to the pub instead' I think tells you what these public schoolboys and their cronies think of us all.

That’s the only thing I can think of that would explain the complete U-turn since 7pm.

Is it a U turn? Or is it the papers making things up?

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 11/03/2020 23:32

Nearlyalmost50

No there isn't ever really a calm and if it does ever get more calm than usual we all worry as it is bound to all kick off and go tits up. That or we check and a full moon is due that evening Grin

But today was weird. Not calm in the slightest but we knew compared to what is heading our way it probably was a period of calm.

NeckPainChairSearch · 11/03/2020 23:32

First phase hand washing was to happy birthday and featured 'fairly' vigorous rubbing. Second, urgent phase hand-washing featured the PM rubbing his hands in an aggressive manner whilst singing, God save our queen. The pm said another cobra meeting would be scheduled for the following day. Speculation in Westminster, hand-washing will be upped to 'VIOLENT, whilst singing, land of hope and glory

I cannot believe that you made me laugh on this thread, but you did Grin

ShanghaiDiva · 11/03/2020 23:34

@Sunshinegirl82
Minimising interaction is something we can all consider, without the govt telling us what to do. We are all intelligent enough consider what to do based on our own health and circumstances.

fedup21 · 11/03/2020 23:37

Is it a U turn? Or is it the papers making things up?

That’s a fair point. We will find out tomorrow, no doubt.

mrshoho · 11/03/2020 23:37

Grin upping handwashing to Violent 😅

Random18 · 11/03/2020 23:38

Is it a U turn? Or is it the papers making things up?

It seems to he a consensus though across all papers?

The govt leak things to the press. They do it deliberately.

windexworksforeverything · 11/03/2020 23:38

Thanks for the link buttermilkwaffles

Hellsbells123098 · 11/03/2020 23:43

Do you think converts and sporting events will take place at the weekend? Partner supposed to travel for a match but I’m concerned and don’t know if I’m over worrying so kind of hoping the decision
Is taken out of our hands

Hellsbells123098 · 11/03/2020 23:44

Sorry *concerts

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 23:45

It just seems very bizarre that one minute they are standing in Parliament all "nothing to see here" and the next they are apparently going to close everything.

I'm feeling a bit sceptical.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 23:45

"Minimising interaction is something we can all consider, without the govt telling us what to do."

Yep, ShanghaiDiva
Common sense would be to avoid crowds,
cancel parties, especially mixing a lot of kids & a lot of adults
cancel all the non-essential activities like clubbing, pubbing, concerts, cinema, sports events etc

Education and earning a living are essential; the rest are not

Cohle · 11/03/2020 23:47

The govt leak things to the press. They do it deliberately

I agree. It prevents panic and gives them room to manoeuvre if particular approaches prove too controversial.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 11/03/2020 23:49

choosing to un isolate themselves at a time when the risks are higher

But if everyone's been isolating for say 2 weeks the risks WOULDN'T be higher. At the moment you have people carrying on as usual. So you can have someone positive go to work (say 100 people at work, touching doors, push button entry, canteen etc), public transport sitting next to say 20 people closely, coughing on them - there and back. Public transport again to go out for evening (another 20). Pub, club, another 100 people say? Even as cases go up - if there is essentially transmission at say 5% of existing transmission for two weeks, the risks will still be lower if you un self-isolate - particularly if many other people are still isolating.

If there are fewer people around, and not doing social things, there is lower transmission.

I've had an 'a-ha' moment. I know public schoolboy types, I went to Uni with a lot of them. They GENUINELY BELIEVE they are better than the rest of us. They GENUINELY BELIEVE seemingly that the majority of us are too stupid / crap to follow public health messages like 'hey, we've cancelled this match because of coronavirus - you know the one that killed your uncle Dave - yes, don't go to the pub instead cos that would be just as bad'

No, we're too thick to do that so they need to get the PM to 'nudge' us (i.e. not tell us the truth and expect us to be responsible but essentially hoodwink the unwashed, stupid masses) by showing us how not to shake hands and how to wash hands.

The utter fuckers. With their private healthcare (watch as they don't requisition private hospitals for the COVID-19 war effort).
