Just that really. Not trying to be to hyped and dramatic about life. How far reaching do you think the consequences of this thing are going to be - economically, socially, politically? Will life ever get back to how it has been?

Let's face it. It's not going to just go away is it? Might just save the planet if the pollution reduction over China is anything to go by though.

OP posts:
GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 10/03/2020 20:32

Yes (which isn't a full sentence, but that's for another thread Grin).

LynnSchmob · 10/03/2020 20:33

25000 people die from starvation every day but we manage to ignore that pretty well.

CatAndFiddle · 10/03/2020 20:34

Coronavirus will feed into the growing anti-globalisation narrative, of which populism, Brexit and America's trade war with China all have a bigger part to play.

GerardWay123 · 10/03/2020 20:37

This situation is going to have far reaching economic consequences. In general the public don't realise this yet.

slipperywhensparticus · 10/03/2020 20:38

I think in one way yes because we will be more aware of how we react to a crisis companies will be more aware of how to work in a crisis and hopefully this will be the beginning of more work from home positions that arnt 20 cogs

Lynda07 · 10/03/2020 20:43

The world will recover.

LynetteScavo · 10/03/2020 20:45

Lots of things change the world as we know it. WWII, the invention of the car and most families being able to afford one, the invention of the internet...yes there will be changes.

I think there will be a focus on lung health. Future generations will look back in horror at people having smoked and driving air polluting cars. People might take weekend breaks to get fresh air, rather than a city break like in the olden days.

I think working at home will be more acceptable. Maybe air travel will be less popular. Maybe more money will be given to our health survive. Maybe people will have two vaccines every winter: flu and corona. Maybe people will continue to wash their hands and stop being gross. Maybe shaking hands will be a thing of the past.

Of course the world won't end, but there will be a shift.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 10/03/2020 20:46

Coronavirus is like a cold though right? And cold viruses mutate a little bit and comeback next year. We could be dealing with this for years and years. It might start affecting everyone, not just the vulnerable (who meant people, even on this thread, don’t seem to give a shit about).

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 10/03/2020 20:47

The number of people who die is a bit of a red herring. Just about nobody whatsoever dies from taking ecstasy or being murdered by a random evil psychopath as a toddler, and yet the disproportionate fear of both have had big impacts.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 10/03/2020 20:47

Many people

Savemefromthis4 · 10/03/2020 20:47

I think if schools etc close it will be a well remembered event in history. It's going to be remembered anyway. I don't know why people have to take the piss. This is already affecting businesses and the NHS. An airline company has gone bust. Parts of the world are knockdown. The loss of life is tragic. It will get better though. I think people just need to be careful for a few months. Instead of taking kids to softplay etc take them in the woods and into the countryside. Go to the beach. Stick to outdoor activities. Don't go to shopping centers. Online shop for now. Avoid public transport and walk more.

Hopefully Boris will start getting people to isolate and shut schools etc soon

Silvercatowner · 10/03/2020 20:48

Cockroaches will take over the earth.

Scuttle

TheMemoryLingers · 10/03/2020 20:51

And cold viruses mutate a little bit and comeback next year.

But in that process, we build up some level of immunity, so although the mutated virus is alien enough to do some damage, it's not totally unknown so our bodies (unless immunocompromised) can soon work out how to produce effective antibodies, hence colds don't tend to have serious effects even on the vulnerable.

This virus is potent because we've never seen one like it before so our bodies are clueless. Future mutated versions won't have such an impact.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 10/03/2020 20:51

Yes

Gammeldragz · 10/03/2020 20:52

Not permanently. But a significant short term disruption to the world as we know it, yes.

LynetteScavo · 10/03/2020 20:53

Instead of taking kids to softplay etc take them in the woods and into the countryside. Go to the beach. Stick to outdoor activities. Don't go to shopping centers. Online shop for now.

Shoppen malls and soft play may become a thing of the past.

GabsAlot · 10/03/2020 20:53

no but i i like the song

Mintypylonsfryingsurplus · 10/03/2020 20:56

I think the OP meant end of our perspective of the world rather than End of the world apocalypse scenario (correct me if I am wrong)
Yes, I think life as we know it will change a great deal.
I think it will finally highlight the huge chasm between the really wealthy in this country and the working poor. It is already at breaking point but if extended periods of quarantine cause businesses to go bust, jobs lost there could be huge consequences for society and the government will have to finally intervene to help.
Its possible that all aspects of public services will be given more funding after the event.
Socially people may be more wary to go out, our already social media obsessed life may replace leaving the house as a preference for some people.
Although the period following WW1 and 1918 flu epidemic saw a period of decadence due to people seeing so much death and destruction, they just wanted to enjoy life.
Major global events do change the pattern and lifestyles of cultures.
The world trade tower terrorist attacks totally changed how people travelled safely.
This could well do the same and be a catalyst for the new decades behaviours.

Wauden · 10/03/2020 20:56

My organisation has no plan whatsoever. Nothing except emails cut and paste from NHS. Nothing about working from home, what will happen if we don't have work laptop with us and are told to stay away from the office and can't work, what about meetings and work outside the office, would we get paid...nothing is in place at all.

Shinycat · 10/03/2020 20:57

PMSL.

EastCoastDamsel · 10/03/2020 20:59

I think it is.

Not in the post-apocalyptic sense but in the post-9/11 or post-2008 sense. I think this is going to result in some pretty big changes globally. I believe nationalism and xenophobia may worsen, that we might see significant reduction in air travel, that home working might become more acceptable and that it depending on how well the EU deals with it potentially more nation states leaving the EU
I

Homkaismycat · 10/03/2020 21:00

Well. It’s a spring outside and I always enjoy spring , living in a country.
This year I just can’t enjoy.
The flowers and the trees are blossoming but I just can’t see it.
Yes, it’s all very negative, not knowing what will happen to me and DD as both in high risk group.( I got a serious chronic lung disease)

ScrapThatThen · 10/03/2020 21:03

I agree about the marathon not a sprint mentality. Apparently most Coronovirus's reach their highest peak on their SECOND winter, after peaking and then subsiding over the summer (Sky news was the source). So reducing public movement at the peaks to relieve pressure on health services and hopefully save more lives is needed, but not going to make it go away any time soon. I guess we might be able to treat it better by the end of the year. Hoping for the best.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 10/03/2020 21:04

Well hopefully, for all those saying that “it only affects the vulnerable”, that I don’t lose both of my vulnerable adult children. My world will have ended, never mind changed.
