magimedi · 10/03/2020 09:44

I hope that RapidRainbow does not mind me starting Part II of the thread - if you do let me know & I'll ask for it to be deleted.

It would just be a shame to not carry on as this is such a positive place.

Part I is here:

This looked useful too. To see it overall, just factual graphs of the situation

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 09:16

That's really interesting @Orangeblossom78

One of the positive things I'm hoping will follow once this is all over (which it will be soon, might take a few months but it WILL pass) is that rates of vaccination will pick right back up.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 09:21

This is about 2018 when we had a larger number of flu cases than usual, I felt it maybe got things in perspective a bit that we got through that - obviously we have the vaccine and not quite the same but this affected more children...anyway also another positive is the main flu season seems to end in March so that should also be at the end around now- we could be having this in a cold, snowy flu-ey winter, not Spring, which is a good thing.

From 2018- not now (to be clear) www.theguardian.com/society/2018/jan/25/three-times-more-people-dying-from-flu-in-uk-than-last-winter

I also checked recent flu figures from PHE online and it says flu cases are low recently (in the last few weeks/months) which is good- less of those cases in hospitals

KnottyAndPistey · 11/03/2020 09:23

Oh my tribe. I’ve found you.

I need to join you all if I may. Pistey here on our Woolly Hugs name because I can’t remember my own log in (amateur)

Daughter (22) is having her tonsils out a week today. I have enough to worry about without any fecking virus! Can feel myself getting very wonky though with all the news/hysteria/doomsday shizzle.

And then I found you all. Thank you xxx

Was just reading about the 100 year old recovering too! Also the AIDS patient in recovery. Science and medicine is a wonderful thing!

@magimedi Tis lovely to see you Flowers

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 09:24

Yes maybe people will be more aware of vaccines, and hand washing, and also may even be a vaccine for this. They are also looking at HIV (antiretrovirals) drugs and also autoimmune drugs (e.g. for arthritis) already for treatment of Coronovirus. All positive.

Maybe in the next few years we could be having a combined flu/coronovirus jab in the Autumn, just as routine.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 09:27

Here is the link to the Public Health England most recent flu reports, as you can see

Summary – Week 09 (ending 01 March 2020)
➢ During week 09, influenza activity decreased or remained stable across most indicators.
➢ The impact of flu on healthcare services is at low impact levels for hospitalisations and below baseline levels for ICU/HDU influenza admissions The Department of Health & Social Care has issued an alert on the prescription of antiviral medicines by GPs.

I think we almost definitely will be seeing that. Science is amazing. We are so lucky to have scientists working around the clock on this and putting all efforts into a vaccine.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 09:32

Did you know the common cold is also a coronavirus?

Roussette · 11/03/2020 09:32

Pineapple Have you had stern words with your DH over pringle-gate? If not, you need to! Grin

And thank you for the youtube link with the academic being interviewed live and the chaos going on behind! It is probably one of my fave clips, have watched it countless times, but it never fails to make me laugh!

Hedgehog26 · 11/03/2020 09:36

Does anyone think we’ll see less of other minor viruses and colds because people are far more aware of handwashing?

Wheresthebeach · 11/03/2020 09:41

Off to stockpile Pringles....

Jrobhatch29 · 11/03/2020 09:47

Hi everyone any advise? The maternity ward at my local hospital closed and became midwifery led. I cant use this service so will be giving birth at another hospital. However my ante natal appointments are still at my local hospital. Ive just heard they are using the now empty maternity ward as the isolation ward, which is very close to ante natal. Theres now 3 cases there, including a hospital porter. How safe do you think it is to attend my appointment? Xx

Greenbutterlfy566 · 11/03/2020 09:52

Does everyone think its OK to holiday in the UK. Eg lego land and a caravan site?

magimedi · 11/03/2020 09:55

Maybe I've started a run on Prigles Grin

Waves back, madly to Pistey. How's your shoulder these days? Must be ages ago it was bad. Hope your DD's op goes well - nasty things, tonsils.

What a lovely thread, thank you! Just had a proper belly laugh at the jokes and will be sharing them.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 10:01

Rob that sounds tricky, would be great if you could go to the new one really as having baby there. Wonder if you could contact them and ask for advice Flowers best of luck with the birth / new baby

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 10:02

I saw something about a man stocking up on sausages- just a trolley full of sausages! Confused and nothing else...

Alsohuman · 11/03/2020 10:02

How safe do you think it is to attend my appointment?

Probably as safe as if it was somewhere else, if not safer. In that situation precautions will be of a really high standard, it’s probably the most infection control conscious antenatal appointment you’ll ever have.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 10:05

Also hospitals have the antic gel on the doors as well, to use.

Winecheesesleep · 11/03/2020 10:05

@Hedgehog26 I was thinking the same thing! I felt I washed my hands quite a lot before this but to be honest wasn't washing them for long enough Blush. I wonder if we'll all realise that now and carry on doing it for 20 seconds in the future.

I love this thread, will come back and post any positive news I see. As a PP mentioned I'm in the unusual position of feeling confident in the government due to them clearly taking such a science-led approach to this.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 10:17

@Greenbutterlfy566

We are going to Butlin's next week. I'm putting my faith in the CMO and PHE and they say to carry on as usual so we're going.

Obviously everyone feels comfortable with different things but I'm happy to stick with following the official guidance.

peoplepleaser1 · 11/03/2020 10:30

I'm a scout leader and am supposed to be shopping for a big camp in a few weeks. So to all intents and purposes I'll look like I'm stocking up!

Wonder if they will let me buy all the pasta, loo rolls, bacon etc. that I need?!

DameXanaduBramble · 11/03/2020 11:03

Thank god for the common sense, rationality of this thread. The other one is largely hysteria.

Thymelord · 11/03/2020 11:10

Does everyone think its OK to holiday in the UK

Absolutely. We are going to Edinburgh on Friday morning for 3 nights for our wedding anniversary. I will admit I had a bit of a wobble (anxiety will do that to you!) but I am firmly over it now. We will wash our hands and remind each other not to touch faces but other than that, business as usual. I anticipate returning on Monday approximately 7lbs heavier and with a pickled liver. Until (if it gets to that stage, which I am confident it won't) the powers that be tell us otherwise I think we should keep calm carry on!

AlandAnna · 11/03/2020 11:27

Got a neighbors 50th birthday do a week on Saturday (posh hotel black tie no kids overnight woohoo!). Have every intention of going, as long as we are allowed to mingle by then of course!
