magimedi · 10/03/2020 09:44

I hope that RapidRainbow does not mind me starting Part II of the thread - if you do let me know & I'll ask for it to be deleted.

It would just be a shame to not carry on as this is such a positive place.

Part I is here:

Checking in Smile

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 10/03/2020 12:00

So good to hear positive stuff on this thread. I am trying to resist looking at the others now.

Awks · 10/03/2020 12:08

Checking in too thanks for the new thread 😬

AutumnRose1 · 10/03/2020 12:09

Apparently we’re the best at responding to this sort of thing

Arcadia · 10/03/2020 12:55

Thank you so much. Not only has this thread hugely helped me but I am passing on positive information now to friends, family and colleagues which is hugely helpful to them too.

silverdollarcity · 10/03/2020 13:04

I went for a run today in the drizzle and it was lovely. And this morning me and DD had a discussion about all the things to be happy about today.

In non-CV good news, I've just heard on the radio that a man in London has just become the second person in the entire world to be cured of HIV. I think that's incredible!

Layladylay234 · 10/03/2020 13:09

Yes I heard about the person being cured from HIV too. Wonderful news. Imagine if Mumsnet had been around in the days of the early epidemic though!
I also found a news article today about a man who is 100 and just recovered from Covid. Healthcare systems around the world are doing wonders and they should all be applauded.

HonestlyItsFine · 10/03/2020 13:17

I saw a piece on BBC news last night- missed most of it, but it appears that there is research going into the factors that make some people seriously ill and others not. They have managed to sequence the whole genetic sequence of the virus, so they can track where and how it mutates etc. All very fascinating and positive!

Spudlet · 10/03/2020 13:19

Just hung the washing out on the line, and it was warm enough that I didn’t need to put my coat on.

I know spring won’t magically solve this, but each warmer day takes us a bit closer to being out of the cold and flu season, which will take a bit of the strain off the NHS. And I am totally nesh, so if I’m ok without a coat you know the weather is on the up.

TheWorstShed · 10/03/2020 13:23

Hi everyone, I have been reading this and the first thread and very appreciative of the calm. I have been really struggling to stop reading rolling news and the scary MN threads, so thought I should try to limit myself to just 10 mins twice a day or something. We have a case in my town now, which is know is inevitable but it has spiked my anxiety, which I struggle with generally.

The science behind all of it and the leaps in understanding are really amazing, and giving me hope.

Thanks for everyone for contributing, you've helped me.

CathyandHeathcliff · 10/03/2020 13:28

Thanks for this thread. Any positive news on the virus today?

Spudlet · 10/03/2020 13:31

RBS will be allowing customers affected by the virus to have a break from paying their mortgages, as are TSB, and others are offering support to businesses that are affected:

Coronavirus: Banks to allow customers to defer mortgage payments www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51817947

Good news if it helps to mitigate some of the economic effects.

MinesaPinot · 10/03/2020 13:32

Hi all, checking in and placemarking. This thread is a godsend in amongst all the madness and hysteria.

Happy thoughts to all. My happy thought of today is that I am having new wardrobes fitted and will at last be able to put my shoes and handbags away rather than leaving them on the floor Smile

Spudlet · 10/03/2020 13:35

And although I can’t get a link to work, the BBC is also reporting that the stock markets have picked up from yesterday. Again, good news for the economy.

mildlymiffed · 10/03/2020 13:39

I just had a little cry at work today. Ridiculous. My anxious mind needs calming! I'd like to be able to switch off my brain chatter. Am going to try some of the meditation apps later.

Amys136 · 10/03/2020 13:40

So glad I found this thread. My piece of positive news is that my 10 month old has her development check and everything was good. I’d been worried about her milk to food ratio but her milk consumption is spot on so I can stop worrying about that now.

Plus I’m getting my haircut later Smile

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/03/2020 13:48

Thanks for the new thread, magimedi.

unluckyagain · 10/03/2020 14:00

I nearly burst into tears this morning when there was no toilet roll in Aldi. Then I looked at the woman next to me who looked equally horrified and burst out laughing. We both decided we would survive somehow and spend the money on wine instead!

HIVpos · 10/03/2020 14:02

@silverdollarcity & @Layladylay234 it is indeed good news re the "London Patient". However, as with the "Berlin Patient" (the first person cured of HIV), the treatment used was actually for life threatening cancer involving a bone marrow transplant. It treated the cancer and ridding the body of HIV was the added bonus.

The treatment itself couldn't be used on all those living with HIV as it's extremely brutal, expensive and unfortunately hasn't worked for others who tried the same. Luckily we do have our own great treatment in the meantime.

The great news is it worked for them and can help in cure research. There is also a 3rd person - the "Dusseldorf Patient" who might be cured, but the last report I saw said it was too early to tell.

Anyway, if anyone's interested, it's quite a good read <a class="break-all" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/09/health/hiv-aids-london-patient-castillejo.html#click=t.co/IOREaWeQHv" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.nytimes.com/2020/03/09/health/hiv-aids-london-patient-castillejo.html#click=t.co/IOREaWeQHv

Thymelord · 10/03/2020 14:22

Good news about the banks allowing mortgage breaks. Hopefully that will help people who might otherwise suffer.

Spudlet · 10/03/2020 14:28

Some totally unrelated good news - two mountain rescue team members went back to the site of a rescue in their own time and cooked sausages and bacon to lure out a dog, who belonged to one of the people rescued and who had been frightened off by the rescue helicopter.

Jrobhatch29 · 10/03/2020 14:32

Im in a really bad place today everyone. Kept my kids off school and never been off my phone reading the news. Read some things that have upset me. Can anyone help pull me round?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/03/2020 14:40

Jrobhatch29 do you bake at all? If so, put the phone down and go and make a cake of some sort, with the kids helping. This will amuse them and hopefully give you something to think about that is not dire and doomladen.

Alternatively, if you have a car, think of a spot removed from the rest of the world and pack a picnic tea and go there with the kids. That isn't much use in London but most other towns have some wild land somewhere in the area -- Google "walks" and where you are, and you should find some. If anyone appears shout to them that you might be infectious and they will go away and not infect you.

Watch a film with the kids and resolve to be a news-free zone for the rest of the day. The news is intended to cause reaction, that's what gets money for them, and right now they want to frighten you.

Roussette · 10/03/2020 14:44

My good news is that I've made a chicken, pesto and spinach lasagne and it looks lush. Grin

I'm posting something that I found funny. It is amusing, but please don't read if you might find a bit of stereotyping of english, scottish, spanish, german etc... offensive. I just thought it might bring a smile to a couple of posters' faces.

Here goes...

UK Virus ALERT

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent virus threat and have therefore raised their threat level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, level may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.”

The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out.

The virus has been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let's Get the Bastard.” They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its alert level from “No worries” to “She'll be alright, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far, no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

The Russians have said “Its not us”
