I hope that RapidRainbow does not mind me starting Part II of the thread - if you do let me know & I'll ask for it to be deleted.

It would just be a shame to not carry on as this is such a positive place.

Part I is here:

And cynically I know that there will be an element of the government that is not unhappy about people being anxious and worried as that keeps the proles compliant and they can sneak all manner of crap decisions under our radar so let's not give them that pleasure 😂

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/3840667-Question-about-hiding-topics

For those who want to and missed the last thread - this is how you hide an entire topic. If you’ve posted on a thread it will still appear in your threads I’m on list, so this one will still appear. I’ve hidden that topic and AIBU, and my goodness it makes this forum a nicer place to be. I’m eyeing up a couple of other topics for culling as well. If you can’t see them it removes a lot of the temptation to just go and have a little look!

I do agree with others though, let’s keep mentions of the other thread to a minimum. We know they’re getting all lathered up, there’s nothing to be gained by reminding ourselves of that. I’d suggest we try and keep this thread rational, calm and positive. Smile

The 'Positive Mental Health' Corona virus thread Part II
ExpletiveDelighted · 11/03/2020 07:38

I am finding it a little strange that for the first time in many, many years I feel confident in the government over a major issue. It is quite calming, normally I expend quite a lot of energy railing against various things (Brexit, state of spending on education the list goes on).

I suffer with mild anxiety off and on. One thing I have learned over the last couple of years is that sharing how anxious I feel with other anxiety sufferers is counter-productive, I have a close friend who I was doing it with and at first it felt as though we were sharing and helping each other but I suddenly realised that I felt worse after seeing her not better. We spoke about this and agreed that while we could rant about specific issues that affect us both we would reign in on unloading the general anxiety feelings onto one another and just chat about normal every day stuff and it has really helped. So I suppose that is the function I want this thread to fulfil too.

The Guardian has an in-depth analysis of how covid-19 differs from Spanish flu. It ends with this quote:

So this new plague is not the Chinese flu or the pangolin flu, it’s the rather more mundane Covid-19 – just one more epidemic in a long line of epidemics that have struck fear into our hearts, and that we can still rein in if we would just listen to our brains instead.

A good motto for this thread perhaps? Reining in our fear and listening to our brains 💪

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 07:45

@ExpletiveDelighted I agree!

It's very strange! I hate Boris and am a passionate remainer but I feel very confident in Chris Whitty and PHE. Like we've got exactly the right people in charge and they'll steer us right. I just find CW very confidence inspiring!

PineappleDanish · 11/03/2020 07:49

That CDC graph is quite striking isn't it? Puts everything into perspective. We're not going about our daily business terrified of rotavirus or norovirus, or even HIV or seasonal flu. But all are far more likely to kill you.

Awks · 11/03/2020 07:56

@PineappleDanish agreed. yesterday a colleague said to me after we'd looked at the graph - ah but shigellosis doesn't generally affect the middle classes, that's why no one worries about that. It made me think

magimedi · 11/03/2020 08:07

Couple of things from me:

RapidRainbow (who started the original thread) & I have thought it would be nice to use Roman Numerals for this thread, to distinguish it a bit from 'the other'. So this is II!

Talking of panic buying, I saw a man with a trolley that has nothing but 20+ tubes of Pringles in it - 2 different flavours. Either he was having a party or has a serious addiction to them. (Can't stand 'em, myself)

I agree let's try to tune out from the other thread a bit. This made me smile this morning - article suggesting that the Vulcan salute could replace the handshake. A little light relief:-)

PineappleDanish · 11/03/2020 08:12

I just came across an old tweet - remember the South Korean academic and his daughter coming into the room when he's being interviewed on the BBC?

IMPOSSIBLE not to watch it and laugh.

Hedgehog26 · 11/03/2020 08:14

Going the shops today and now I want Pringles!

Feeling much better after 24 hours (ish) clear of the other thread. Weathers looking nice so looking forward to taking the baby out for some fresh air later

PineappleDanish · 11/03/2020 08:18

I also saw this New Zealand article which a friend over there linked to on social media. Talks a lot of sense about flattening the curve and what sensible measures we can take. Not alarmist.

Spudlet · 11/03/2020 08:23

@PineappleDanish I adore that video. I watch it quite often when I feel fed up!

He was interviewed again about the outbreak over there (and was v calm and confident), but alas, they’ve clearly put a lock on the door Sad

Thymelord · 11/03/2020 08:26

I cant be positive about this personal horror story. I sent Mr Thyme out to get pringles last night and he came home with Aldi's own brand 'Stackems' Angry They do not taste the same. I had to eat the whole tube a few to draw my conclusions but I'm not happy. I think I was supposed to be pleased that two tubes of bloody stackems are the same price as one tube of pringles Angry

chilling19 · 11/03/2020 08:28

Checking in. Great thread.

Justgivemethehobnobs · 11/03/2020 08:31

This thread is such a great idea. After a whole day yesterday of feeling anxious, have decided going to try and ignore the news and other threads of doom today!
On a personal note I'm on maternity leave and my flexible working request for approved this week so I am very happy about that Smile

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 11/03/2020 08:37

@Eebahgumlass - oh, god, I'd become a social pariah! I can't separate my fingers without using the other hand - I'd lose all my friends because they'd get fed up with waiting to see if I was trying to salute them or about to flip them off...

Canshopwillshop · 11/03/2020 08:44

Morning all. It’s quite a nice morning here (aka no rain!). Just off to meet friends and take dog for a walk in the forest.

Hope everyone has a calm day.

alreadytaken · 11/03/2020 08:45

From twitter "Toilet paper is out of stock. Cat litter isn't. You know what you need to do. "

Some people aren't shaking hands because of the Coronavirus.
I'm not shaking hands because everyone is out of toilet paper.

Eebahgumlass · 11/03/2020 08:48

@Zoidbergonthehalfshell ha ! I just practiced and am no great shakes either. I can sort of do it by hooking my little finger slightly over my fourth finger. Clearly I am very busy...

alreadytaken · 11/03/2020 08:54

This is brilliant - if only others were as sensible

Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp, when asked about coronavirus: “I don’t understand politics, I don’t understand the coronavirus. Why ask me? All I do is wear a baseball cap and I have a bad shave. Celebrities shouldn’t speak on these serious issues. Leave it to the experts.”

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 08:58

There is some useful looking stuff on the BBC today- something about 'cocooning' the elderly so they are looking at that.

Spudlet · 11/03/2020 08:58

@Thymelord Sending thoughts and prayers at this time of crisis 😔
