magimedi · 10/03/2020 09:44

I hope that RapidRainbow does not mind me starting Part II of the thread - if you do let me know & I'll ask for it to be deleted.

It would just be a shame to not carry on as this is such a positive place.

Part I is here:

PurpleMe- Flowers.
What helped me was some statistics. Something like less than 0.5% of people in Wuhan, the epicentre, were confirmed positive overall. It's still high numbers of people, but in perspective, it's not so bad (numbers wise) as the media are making it out. the vast majority of people do not even get the virus.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 04:57

The vastajoritu just have it mildly and can just stay at home. I can't sleep. Trying listening to Spotify music helps s bit

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 04:58

Majority that was meant to say

StillNotANewUser · 11/03/2020 06:14

Urgh this is utter madness. Just been drawn into replying to another thread where a HCP has cancelled going to work because their teenage symptoms has the classic symptoms of the common cold - runny nose, cough, headache, no fever.

She's being told how she's definitely doing the right thing, it's an outrage he's not being tested and there should be more people like her HmmAngry. Bonkers levels of hysteria...

Tartan333 · 11/03/2020 06:18

People are still talking about the other thread and how bad it is which is significantly increasing my anxiety so I'm coming off here now as it's not helping anymore which is a shame.

Comps83 · 11/03/2020 06:21

Agree with Tartan. This thread isn't so positive anymore .

Superbrew · 11/03/2020 06:22

Tartan333... I come on this thread only by googling mumsnet coronavirus positive mental health and it comes straight up on Google I dont enter the site or have to look at any other thread, I am also avoiding negativity- but this thread has been very calming it would be a shame to lose this along with the others!

StillNotANewUser · 11/03/2020 06:35

Please everyone don't get freaked out by the existence of the other thread. There are always going to be people who trawl through the news looking for anything to justify them making dramatic claims. THEY are the ones with the problem, not the sensible folk on here. It doesn't matter how doomsday-ish it is, they're getting some ghoulish enjoyment out of it but just because they accuse everyone else of complacency doesn't make them right.

All the news right now is cautiously optimistic. China reaching the end of its outbreak. Italy peaking and although it must be hellish being over there, the vast, vast majority of the country aren't even sick let alone seriously ill or dying. Our rate of case increase is a lot slower than Italy. The unified response the NHS is capable of is unparalleled and there are measures already being implemented to be able to cope with the strain on ITU etc IF it's needed.

Looking at the Times headlines this morning, top story is that Nadine Dorries is positive (and I'm trying hard not to make any jokes about that!). Then that they're doing more tests. Then a bunch of unrelated stuff about the budget, potholes and controlled crying in babies! Seriously, the world is still turning life is going on as usual and with possibly a brief bump if we're told to stay in for a couple of weeks, it will continue to do so.

chatterbugmegastar · 11/03/2020 06:45

What a marvellously happy thread. Thank you Thanks

Awks · 11/03/2020 07:04

I understand, but look out of your windows everyone, the wheels are turning - people are walking their dogs, going on school trips, flying on holiday all the normal day to day stuff. The signs are positive and we have some of the best brains in the land focussing on helping us through this. It will all be ok you know, it will and most of us aren't even clear in our own heads what we are truly anxious about - it's just unknown and uncontrollable and that's the bit that's susceptible to drama and media.

Serenity prayer alert 😬 Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

ExpletiveDelighted · 11/03/2020 07:09

It is the uncertainty that is the issue for me, I am very much a plan ahead person. Maybe this will teach me to chill out a bit.

Layladylay234 · 11/03/2020 07:13

How about if you want to post on here, try to find a positive news story to share...doesn't have to be coronavirus linked. That might try and keep the moral up and the talk away from the other doom laden thread

namechangedforthecraic · 11/03/2020 07:14

What an awful night's lack of sleep! But so true to look out the window, go out in the local area and see life going on as it always does. So different to the world portrayed on the internet. Trying hard to appreciate what I have right now rather than being afraid of the unknown that may never happen.

Roussette · 11/03/2020 07:15

On the subject of potholes. We don't have those. We have craters!

The NHS who have been great as far as I'm aware, are ramping up their testing facilities from 1,500 a day to 10,000 a day. This is excellent news because it enables containment and allow those testing positive to take the right action.

crazydiamond222 · 11/03/2020 07:15

Here is some good news on the rapid development of a drug to treat covid 19
www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/10/hopes-rise-over-experimental-drugs-effectiveness-against-coronavirus

Roussette · 11/03/2020 07:16

crazydiamond222 I mentioned that article upthread, it will alleviate the syptoms which is fantastic news for those who are more vulnerable and have underlying conditions.

crazydiamond222 · 11/03/2020 07:18

Also a positive story about someone in their late 60s who got coronavirus and made a quick recovery
www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/02/28/i-have-coronavirus-so-far-it-isnt-that-bad/

Layladylay234 · 11/03/2020 07:18

Here's mine, there are currently 48,365 current cases. We have 359 of those. Think about that TINY number. And 42,618,so 88% of those, are mild. This is worldwide. We have NO reason to think the UK will be different when the peak hits. Please look at the statistics, not the doomsday prophets.

My personal positive news today is I've finally found someone to do some reflexology on me. I'm hoping it's going to help my sleep as at 28 weeks pregnant,I'm finding it very broken!

Please everyone make sure you get out for a walk today and fgs, block Mumsnet or hide the threads for a bit

PineappleDanish · 11/03/2020 07:20

Nadine Dorries has also just tweeted that she's over the worst of it. She's obviously not been in hospital, and was probably diagnosed a while ago.

I also saw this chart linked to by the Ologies people.

gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

A couple of things I'm taking from it. Mainland China's cases are now not increasing, and they show a "now recovered" graph too which is more than half of the people who have been confimed as having it - plus all the thousands of mild cases who were never detected.

ScarlettDarling · 11/03/2020 07:20

I think it's really counter productive on a 'positive' thread for people to be talking about how anxious and terrified they are and how scary the other thread is. This thread isn't the place for those comments. This is a place to stay positive and post reassuring news

midgebabe · 11/03/2020 07:20

In the uk there are many many thousands more big lottery winners than people with the virus
I have never known a big lottery winner, cheers me up anyway.

Awks · 11/03/2020 07:22

@Layladylay234 good idea. One of the reasons we don't have a treatment yet Is because researching and developing drugs moves slowly usually and for stuff like this, you can't develop drugs in advance as there's noone to test it on because the virus didn't exist. But with CV now we have people to test drugs on and the investment is unprecedented and global collaboration begun already so a treatment will come first and then a vaccination will follow. www.gatesfoundation.org/Media-Center/Press-Releases/2020/03/COVID-19-Therapeutics-Accelerator

brendansbuddy · 11/03/2020 07:23

This is a great thread. Rational, calming, factual. I have a relative working 12-hour days at PHEngland and he is very reassuring about it. He has the facts at his fingertips and is very clear that the government strategy is based on sound decisions and health expert advice and that we don't need to panic. Gossip, rumour and fake news really ramps up in these situations. So stick with this haven of calm Smile

peeledplumtomatoes · 11/03/2020 07:23

Thank you for this thread. It definitely helps to put things into perspective.
