Took my daughter to A And E as I was concerned about her as she's not been well for 4 days. I have been really worried about her. ( not corona virus related at all )
Anyway she gets seen by the nurse in triage and he's said that I've put her at high risk of corona virus getting her seen and made out she will now get the virus because I've taken her to hospital. I've never taken her to hospital when I'll but on this occasion I have been really worried.
Now I feel like a terrible parent and feel like I can't win 😢 will she now get the virus because she's entered the hospital

So initially I read this and thought back to the time I took my DD to A&E at the request of her school because she had a facial injury (that actually resulted in surgery under a general).
I was shocked at how busy it was and how many people ‘appeared’ ok. I mean, I know it’s hard to tell, but the number of people chatting away on their phones etc. One guy even ‘popped out’ to get a McDonalds for him and his girlfriend while they were waiting to be seen.
I admit to feeling like a lot of them shouldn’t have been there so my initial reaction was you should have called 111 or been to see an out of hours GP rather then automatically go to A&E.
That said, I agree the nurse was wrong to say what she did and the way she said it was unkind.
With a persistent fever you can try alternating calpol with ibuprofen every 2 hours to get it down. I would feel fobbed off with the constipation diagnosis too. Perhaps now is the time to call 111 with full history for further help.

cologne4711 · 10/03/2020 14:35

If they don't want people to go to A&E then they need to sort out GP services and ensure people can get seen or a telephone appointment when they ask for one.

People aren't going to call 111 at the moment because it will be clogged with all the people who have a bit of a cold calling them to see if they have corona.

OP it's highly unlikely you dd will have corona. Ignore the nurse who was probably under massive pressure.

cologne4711 · 10/03/2020 14:36

Out of hours GPs will only see you if you have a letter from the Holy Ghost (at least in our area) so that's not often an option either, though they do tend to be more forthcoming with children I think.

idonttrustboris · 10/03/2020 14:42

Depends what she had wrong with her really.
A&E is for accidents and emergencies.

Has she had an accident or emergency?
Did you call 111? Or your out of hours GP?

frumpety · 10/03/2020 14:42

I think the best thing to do is to keep a note of the temperatures you are recording , so before ibuprofen or paracetamol and then again an hour after, how far does it come down ? . Can I ask if you have checked your own temp with the thermometer ? I only ask as some read a bit higher.
Does the pain go with pain relief ? Is she still complaining of pain , is it constant or does it come and go , is it always in the same place ?
Possibly a step too far for you , but the next time DD does a poo can you ask her not to flush so you can check it ? , if it is watery or very loose , it could be whats called overflow , where only the really runny stuff can get past the constipated stool. If you want to get technical you can look up the Bristol stool chart and it will tell you how to identify the stool Smile
It is good that she is still drinking and quite normal for kids to go off their food if they are feeling rubbish. Their appetite soon bounces back. I have let mine live off ice lollies and ice cream for a couple of days when they have been poorly.
Hopefully she will be feeling better soon. If she gets worse, I would contact your GP again.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/03/2020 16:24

To the last 2 posters, op has been to her gp and to a and e, but you will have seen if you have read it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/03/2020 16:33

Her gp said it was just a virus, instead of getting back to her gp she went to a and e. Since then she has rung her gp and asked for advise.

worriedmumishere · 10/03/2020 18:21

Has anyone's child ever had A fever for 5 days plus though? With just viral symptoms? Like other people's experiences would be helpful to know to put my kind at rest

Thisismytimetoshine · 10/03/2020 18:24

Without meaning to be nasty, op, you’ve been to both your gp and the a&e department. Randoms on the Internet can’t reassure you when they’ve both failed to do so.
Are you following their advice?

Mayaaaaa · 10/03/2020 18:25

Yes both if mine.

Ds recently took over 2 weeks to get over it fully. He saw a doctor and I called, once, for advice and the doctor called back and asked us to come in.

I was recently ill for almost 3 weeks. Fever, cough, aches, headache. Got a chest infection. Called 111 as I became breathless on a weekend and saw OOH.

Goingunderground2 · 10/03/2020 18:51

Yes. Several times. And all symptoms you describe with constipation.

To the previous poster about being fobbed off with constipation, I'm glad I had that diagnosis there's a lot worse things it could of been I was relieved it was just that.

worriedmumishere · 10/03/2020 18:56

@Goingunderground2 she does have flu symptoms too though

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 10/03/2020 19:33

If two separate doctors can’t reassure you then completely unqualified strangers on MN can’t.
You are sounding more and more like you have a form of health anxiety.

worriedmumishere · 10/03/2020 19:43

@Wolfiefan health anxiety because I'm worried about my child ? And with the new strain of corona virus isn't everyone anxious ?

OP posts:
Goingunderground2 · 10/03/2020 20:04

That I completely agree with. Flu symptoms can be symptoms of other things.

We are all trying to reassure you.

You have three issues if your anxious deal with them one at a time.

  • corona virus.
  • treatment received off nurse in a and e
  • your daughters fever.

Deal with your daughter now with what you can do at home. If it escalates seek appropriate help. The others later. You sound really anxious deal with what you can now forget the nurse in a and e and low risk of coronavirus.

But you must meet health professionals half way follow there advice if it doesn't work you've proven it false and discuss again.

When your anxious unconsciously you maybe coming over stand off(ish) this May make discussion with health care professionals strained they are trying to help you. I've been there. Meet them halfway and you will get better support

Wolfiefan · 10/03/2020 20:27

Two doctors have told you it’s a virus.
You’re searching for reassurance from complete strangers online. None of whom are likely to be doctors.
Starting multiple threads about the same thing.
Refusing to accept anything you’re told that doesn’t feed your anxiety.
Yep.

WanderingTrolley1 · 10/03/2020 21:32

How old is your child, OP, and, apart from fever, what other symptoms are they displaying?

worriedmumishere · 10/03/2020 21:38

@WanderingTrolley1 she's 8 and she's got stuffy/runny nose, headache, loss of appetite, she was sick and had stomach pain. She's just not herself

OP posts:
worriedmumishere · 10/03/2020 21:50

I think the reason why I'm so anxious when it comes to very high temps is because my son ( he's 3 nearly 4) has convulsions when he has a high temp so my automatic reaction is worry from a high temp

OP posts:
newbingepisodes · 10/03/2020 21:55

My kids have been ill for 6 months - constant stuff comes from nursery.
I'm defo not going near a doc surgery or a&e unless one of us is at deaths door - and not just cuz of coronavirus .... my local hospital has declared yet another major outbreak of norovirus!

Gertie75 · 10/03/2020 22:06

I don't have advice on your dd's fever however regarding your original question about her getting CV because of going to A&E I doubt she has.

I had to go to A&E myself last night and the people I saw on the waiting room were being very hygienic, frequently using the hand sanitiser, any coughs were being done into a tissue etc plus there were signs at the entrance saying not to enter of you suspect you have CV.

During my treatment I was chatting to the doctor about CV and he said I would've been more at risk of catching it at my local supermarket that day surrounded by people who hadn't just sanitised their hands and were ignoring any fevers or coughs they have.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 10/03/2020 22:11

I am so surprised that there are all those amateur doctors and nurses on here that can triage from a couple of lines on the OP that the OP didn’t need to take her daughter to A&E.

There have been plenty of times when a GP has got it wrong, or a condition worsens and A&E is the best place to go

GrumpyHoonMain · 10/03/2020 22:11

I have had strange flu symptoms - fever was high And came with muscle pain for a week and now comes and goes. Had a dry cough for a week. Now I have wheezing / chest pain with a wet hacking cough. I have been told by medical professionals I know that I probably do have it but that if I am able to get on with things I shouldn’t contact the NHS until I can’t manage (I am not considered high risk). I have been advised to self-isolate.

AStarSoBright · 10/03/2020 22:24

How is her temperature tonight?

worriedmumishere · 10/03/2020 22:25

@GrumpyHoonMain sorry to hear your ill too. It's just awful at the moment with things going round. Do you mean you probably have the corona virus? Have you been in contact with someone with it?
