I can see that. I'm sure that the scientists advising the government have been studying the course of the outbreak in other countries. They are not ignoring your experiences in Spain, but taking them into account as they consider the next move.

Novia · 26/03/2020 20:47

Well from outside it looks a lot like weeks of dithering and an initial plan to aim for herd immunity has led instead to incoherent and inconsistent messaging which will put most of our loved ones squarely in the firing line.

BirdandSparrow · 26/03/2020 20:59

I'm sure that the scientists advising the government have been studying the course of the outbreak in other countries. They are not ignoring your experiences in Spain, but taking them into account as they consider the next move. I'm not buying that. It's a shambles. And people are taking the piss. None of it has been communicated properly in the UK.

BirdandSparrow · 26/03/2020 21:02

They just don't want to or feel they can't go in hard yet. Obviously we'd all love to be allowed out to exercise here in Spain, but we can't and are managing, so they idea that people "can't" manage without outdoor exercise feels a bit..well ridiculous to those of us on day 13 of pretty much total confinement.

Nameisthegame · 27/03/2020 09:11

@TheSparklyPussycat the uk left it too late they had a great chance to nip it in the but but failed. Exercise is great I’m sure all of us in Spain who didn’t get dogs 😂 would love to go out for a walk. Mental health is important too but you can exercise inside there’s so many videos...don’t leave the house if you can help it if your in the uk it’s going to be a real shit storm.

Hello, I am in the UK and have been following this thread, I hope you don't mind. It has been really helpful to see how you are all coping with lockdown in Spain.

I completely agree that there are so many people in the UK who think the rules don't apply to them. Harping on about needing to exercise outdoors. It's ridiculous. And last Friday night when the pubs were meant to be closing, so many had a last "party" I dread to think about how quickly the virus is spreading.

I have made decisions based on what I think will keep my family safe, having seen what's happening elsewhere in Europe. I took my DC out of school/nursery a week before they closed. My parents have been self-isolating 2 weeks already as both are high risk. We are staying at home and I'm leaving only to get shopping and deliver it to my parents.

The UK government just seems so slow to react. They are turning the ExCel in London into a 4,000 bed hospital, so they know what's coming. They need to be stronger - too much of it has been advice, rather than orders.

Anyway, sorry for gatecrashing your thread - hope you are all managing as well as can be expected and that you all stay safe and well.

BirdandSparrow · 28/03/2020 09:03

Hi Millie! I think a lot of people in the UK are doing their best. Everyone I know in the UK is very scared and has been doing what they can to reduce their social contact. They are turning the ExCel in London into a 4,000 bed hospital, so they know what's coming. I was thinking that the other day. I do think they've reacted late and confusingly. Even on here there seem to be so many people arguing about why they can/should go out.
I do think the exercise loophole will prove to have been a mistake too as well as the schools for key workers. I understand it's very difficult for healthcare workers, but in some areas there seem to be a lot of children still at school. I have a friend who is a teacher and says there are still about 300 children going to her school. Also, the huge list of key workers.
I'm not sure what healthcare workers do here, but there is no school open anywhere in Spain.

MillieMoodle · 28/03/2020 12:05

Hi Bird, the schools have also interpreted things differently here. The official guidance is that if either parent is a key worker then they can use the schools but only if their child can't stay at home. Our village school are taking children if one parent is a key worker but not checking whether those children could be at home with the other parent. So people are taking the piss and sending their kids in when one parent is able to look after them at home.

DS1's school have interpreted it strictly which I'm pleased about, as it has stopped people taking the piss. They are insisting that both parents are key workers and that children are only in school when absolutely necessary. So if you finish work at 12pm, you're expected to collect your child from school on the way home. Where one parent is a key worker, they are expecting the other (non key worker) parent's employers to step up and allow that parent to work from home.

There's a lot of confusion about what is and isn't allowed, the exercise thing in particular. The police now have powers to issues fixed penalty charges to people breaking the rules, but I'm yet to see the police anywhere. I think they are focusing on towns. We live quite rurally and life seems to be carrying on as normal for some, which is very frustrating when many of us are trying to do our bit.

elQuintoConyo · 28/03/2020 12:19

"confusion" is the right word when I think of the UK at the moment. As you can see from find threads on here, people are confused about walking their dogs, what counts as exercise, how many times they can go out, can they visit Pils up the road.....

And a loads of people chancing their arm and being utter bellends.

I cannot read anything about the UK as it makes me very anxious for my family and friends, particularly those who have underlying health issues.

I'm honestly fairly embarrassed when my friends ask me wtf BJ is doing. I have to shrug and say 'nowt to do with me, I left in '97' HmmGrin

MillieMoodle · 28/03/2020 12:37

@elQuintoConyo it is worrying indeed. The impression I get from here in the UK is that those in Spain, Italy, Germany etc are doing a much better job of understanding why it is important to comply with government advice/orders, and are therefore following them much better. There's too many in the "but it doesn't apply to me because..." brigade here in the UK. They just need to STFU and comply!

Bojo needs to be stronger though. I am worried he is leaving it too late to make decisions, although trying to reassure myself that there are lots of medical and scientific advisors who will have access to all the data before decisions are made. We will continue to only go out for shopping and medical needs, to try to minimise our exposure. My parents are under house arrest, I've waited 36 years to tell them they're grounded Grin

elQuintoConyo · 28/03/2020 12:53

I think if you're self isolating and doing minimal shopping etc, running things to parents/elderly who are isolating, then you're doing your bit and must just ignore the idiots. I literally just stay away from uK media, shut my brain off, hunker down and don't be a dick Grin

The 8yo hasn't been outside since 14th March. We wash ours dog's paws after every walk. The 2m distance is being respected by all. We're clapping for the service workers - even the container ships waiting to dock are honking, it's heart warming.

Tbh in my medium-sized town I haven't heard of anyone being shouted at by police, followed by drones, spat on by teenagers, stripping shelves of any products, jogging at night, driving miles to walk their dogs in the woods etc.

elQuintoConyo · 28/03/2020 12:55

Having said all that, Spain should have cancelled a few mass-crowd events weeks ago and we have a frighteningly large number of infected and dead Sad

BirdandSparrow · 28/03/2020 12:57

I think the stricter the lockdown is, the more people understand the seriousness of it. I mean here, it was schools closed and a state of alarm imposed the next day that was very strict. Followed up by loads of official communication about what you could and couldn't do and the consequences of disobeying. We weren't left in any doubt about either the seriousness of it or really what it involved.
That really hasn't happened in the UK. And I think the key workers school thing and the exercise is a massive part of that. Too many exceptions.

This in El Pais says no school until May or even June for primary. But basically they really don't have any idea. elpais.com/sociedad/2020-03-27/lo-que-se-sabe-de-la-escolarizacion-de-tu-hijo.html?fbclid=IwAR3KPRlr9_cVQBfZqCqG85NSxOUq3SKxXgKyNc_oAAjsAnivuXXnFvNvDhA
My DD is in tercero and has had poor teachers all through from infantil, her teacher this year is really good and she's missing maybe as much as 3 months of education :(

MillieMoodle · 28/03/2020 16:38

@elQuintoConyo the UK government's message should just be "don't be a dick"! More people might get it then Grin

Wishing you all good health from the UK x

Nameisthegame · 28/03/2020 19:11

My daughter said the other day that she thought staying inside was her fault for being naughty so I had to explain to a 2 year old. I cried a little bit but we are still staying inside. Today’s clap o’clock is the loudest it’s ever been.

There was clapping for children today. The police went round playing that "chuchu wa wa wa" kids' song from loud speakers.

Nameisthegame · 28/03/2020 19:38

I heard sirens but no song but I am in the back away from the road. My little one is playing football in the basement with nana.

Novia · 28/03/2020 22:12

I haven't heard any clapping where we are, but it's also usually when the kids are getting ready for bed and we are at the end of a gated cul de sac so not many people around....

How is everyone getting on?

Here in the Basque Country the weather has turned. I can see snow on the mountain from my window! It's easier to be inside with it like this, I think.

DC6 is taking it really hard and acting out, despite normally being a fairly angelic child. DC2 doesn't seem to have noticed.

I'll be sending off my invoices today, obviously only covering half of the month. Has anyone had any success with accessing any sort of autonoma financial help? We applied for a mortgage holiday and we don't meet the criteria as Dh earns more than €1600. The mortgage is €1100 and we absolutely pushed ourselves being able to buy in the second most expensive part of Spain so we are really worrying now!

elQuintoConyo · 31/03/2020 09:03

We've not tried autonomous help as DH still has work coming in, luckily (translator for US firm). He's taking in anything he can get and storing it like nuts for winter! Just hope payment comes through ok.

Weather in my part of Catalunya is pretty crap, temperature has dropped and it's been raining. Even getting the dog out seems a faff.

Mentally we're all going ok. 8yo doesn't speak about school much even though we can see it from our window! He's in contact with done friends via Keho challenge and Drawing challenge that they devised. He plays Roblox every Saturday morning with a cousin which he looks forward to immensely. We do a mix of school work and fun but educational stuff (experiments with ice, cooking, measuring stuff, writing a diary). I made him a 35-word wordsearch at the weekend that's keeping him amused!

We try and go exercise every day, Zumba it cosmic yoga. We tried Joe Wicks but in a ceramic-floored flat with downstairs neighbours it proved way too noisy and too uncomfortable to do an crunches (no rugs). As much as I like his workout, we've moved onto something else.

There's been a lot of TV, a lot of tablet, a lot of Minecraft, a little reading. There's been a LOT of hugs and kisses, DS has got very clingy. There's been a lot of WhatsApp videos and photos flying about, a lot of WhatsApp video chats.

I've mostly been avoiding the news tbh. Especially British news!

Our day is mostly: breakfast, walk dog, exercise, shower, faff, lunch, prepare work (me), work (me), faff, dinner, walk dog, tv,/boardgames, bed. Rinse and repeat. I prefer weekdays to weekends, more structure. I'm a teacher, I have next week off, it may drive me nuts! I'll need a routine B.

sevilla.abc.es/economia/abci-gobierno-cede-y-estudia-aplazar-cuotas-autonomos-202003302359_noticia.html This sounds promising. I'm not eligible for help either, the way they've set it up, but hoping they'll approve these measures to suspend the cuota.

Spain records record single-day death toll

Spain has recorded a record new single-day coronavirus death toll after 849 people died from the virus between Monday and Tuesday, reports my colleague Sam Jones in Madrid.

The country’s total number of cases now stands at 94,417 – up from 85,195 on Monday – and its death toll at 8,189.

:( when were we supposed to peak?
