I would advise anyone doing online grocery orders to double check them before delivery. Have one coming tomorrow and all of my tinned goods and pasta is now out of stock. Guess panic buying is getting worse. My mum has found the same with Tesco

Freezingold · 09/03/2020 14:24

@MrsStrangerThing I am totally gobsmacked that we aren’t doing this as of today.

Surely it will increase social distancing for everyone and delay the impact. Which we must, I’m not sure people understand that we must? Yes this is going to be with us for a long time. However if we spike now as in Iran and Italy then the ICU beds will not cope. We haven’t had time to adjust and prepare adequately.

Laniakea · 09/03/2020 14:25

have you looked at the 111.nhs.uk/covid-19 covid screening thing, the start now link about half way down the page?

They are only interested in travel history or exposure to confirmed cases, regardless of your symptoms.

FAQs · 09/03/2020 14:25

@BarbedBloom yep just had the same, logged into mine delivery for tomorrow to add something and several items unavailable, I’m only doing my standard weekly shop, so frustrating!

oneteen · 09/03/2020 14:25

Someone posted some test date yesterday (it was only up until the 2nd March) www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/covid-19-testing/

It would be good if this data was issued again..

It's all very well to say well, just isolate yourself but some elderly I know are very trusting of what they are told and if 'they' say it is fine to go out they will do. And to not stock up on food either.

fingers crossed do not have to try and do an online order if elderly parents get sick then.

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 14:27

@Frouby Anyone working can not just choose to self isolate. Most of us can't even choose to work from home. Maybe you move in rich circles where all this would be just another choice?
And you must realise that self isolating to avoid the virus means self isolating for months. Basically I would be sacked and have no money.
Being able to wfh would help, but the Government have to advise this before my company will do it.

Frazzled2207 · 09/03/2020 14:27

@realhousewife
Apols I was wrong and you were right. It appears that the Wales/NI/scotland figs are in the "undetermined" section is that right?
Also suspect less confirmed cases is simply due to less testing at the weekend, sadly

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 14:27

fortunately with an excellent group of public health & scientific advisers

Are their recommendations being followed?

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 14:29

The govt could do much more to bring in or encourage low cost measures
the kind that would be effective with minimum disruption to the economy and daily life for most people
but would also bring reassurance to some

e.g.
Encourage firms to allow WFH whenever feasible
Advise people NOT to go on cruise ships
Allow parents to keep kids home from school, without fines or losing school place
Encourage people 66+ or with health issues, to avoid public transport and crowds
Ban school trips abroad
Ban public gatherings / events / trade fairs etc of more than 1,000 - sports events etc in closed stadiums

BarbedBloom · 09/03/2020 14:30

@FAQs Yes, same. I think the problem is when people start seeing stuff out of stock it will worry them and they will grab what is still available. I make all of my own bread and I can't get yeast.

NewElthamMum13 · 09/03/2020 14:31

I'm a public health student at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, which is a specialist public health and epidemiology research institution. They have some resources on Covid-19 that some of you might be interested in, including a free online course and expert Q&A sessions.

salty78 · 09/03/2020 14:31

@Frouby @Lillyhatesjaz I agree. The government is being level-headed given the tiny proportion of those diagnosed so far. I can't actually believe I'm saying that as someone generally sceptical about anything that comes out of the Tory party. I'm a great believer in the need for experts though and respect the wisdom of those advising the government.

Panic is causing more harm than good though, for the NHS, the financial markets and everyone's mental health. I don't agree that it's maintaining a stiff upper lip, it's about avoiding widespread panic resulting in a general retreat into some selfish bunker mentality. I wish I had more faith but the crazy panic-buying bog roll just shows it takes very little to trigger people.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 14:32

I agree

Tell elderly / vulnerable might be wise to get in a few things for a week if needed such as food, and that may be wise to stay away from e.g. children for a little while, for example

seasmize · 09/03/2020 14:32

@MrsStrangerThing

But that article says: “Since last week, patients presenting to 100 participating GP practices with severe respiratory infections, but who do not display Covid-19 symptoms, are being tested on an opportunistic basis.”

It’s designed to catch people WITHOUT typical Covid-19 symptoms, assuming I guess that those people will be caught because they present with symptoms.

Yet we know that they are only testing people who have traveled to a limited set of countries or who have had contact with a confirmed case while they were symptomatic.

There is big gap there, then. They are not testing people with classic covid-19 symptoms who may be acquiring it in the community.

Freezingold · 09/03/2020 14:34

Wow just read the testing figures, China tested 320,000 in 3 weeks! Logistically that is amazing.

StarUtopia · 09/03/2020 14:34

Genuine question. Right now, anyone displaying flu like symptoms obviously rings 111, gets referred for testing, confirmed corona virus etc.

In a few months time, people will just 'have the flu' or 'have a bad cold' and won't even be letting the doctor know.

Just my opinion. How would you even know if someone you'd been in contact with had had it? And if husband is laid low with a bad cold/flu possibly corona virus but who knows, I sure as hell am still going to work as we'd already be one income down.

Surely we all just need to accept you're going to get it regardless and just carry on??

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 14:35

"Not sure I buy that. They seem out of their depth. Ambivalent and slow - rather like the NHS ime."

I disagree
They are held in great respect abroad

Public health officials have to obey govt instructions and will be aware themselves that public health measures can't be taken in isolation from the economy

If the UK govt tried the same measures as China, the country would be bankrupt, while suffering a major civil uprising
A democracy requires a different strategy to a ruthless dictatorship

HRH2020 · 09/03/2020 14:35

I popped in to my gp surgery today to get a repeat prescription and they were calling everyone to let them know it was telephone appointments only from now on.

Sounds sensible but a bit worried as I work in gp surgeries who are continuing as normal

NeckPainChairSearch · 09/03/2020 14:36

Barbed I couldn't get yeast for a week, then it's suddenly back today (Tesco). Meaningless, possibly, just trying to give encouraging news...I bake our bread too.

uk.yahoo.com/news/coronavirus-supermarkets-float-competition-waiver-crisis-deepens-130900537.html

Just seen this, Supermarkets wanting to work together to ensure supplies are met and looking at how to help anyone self isolating

Really pleased to see this, and although the government is happily skipping around blindly, others are stepping up

cjt110 · 09/03/2020 14:37

@Freezingold Didn't they build that hospital from group up in a week? Puts other countries to shame!

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 14:38

Stunning level of personal monitoring by the Chinese state

  • will they just give that up once the crisis is over ?

'The new normal': China's excessive coronavirus public monitoring could be here to stay

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/09/the-new-normal-chinas-excessive-coronavirus-public-monitoring-could-be-here-to-stay

Experts say the coronavirus has given the Chinese government a pretext for accelerating the mass surveillance

Over the last two months, Chinese citizens have had to adjust to a new level of government intrusion.

Getting into one’s apartment compound or workplace requires scanning a QR code, writing down one’s name and ID number, temperature and recent travel history.

Telecom operators track people’s movements while social media platforms like WeChat and Weibo have hotlines for people to report others who may be sick.

Some cities are offering people rewards for informing on sick neighbours Shock

Chinese companies are meanwhile rolling out facial recognition technology that can detect elevated temperatures in a crowd
or flag citizens not wearing a face mask.

A range of apps use the personal health information of citizens to alert others of their proximity to infected patients or whether they have been in close contact.
