From what I understand, calculating CFR accurately is an incredibly task, even when done retrospectively. I think, for now, we have to accept that the figure is “somewhere in the region of 1-3.5%”.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 09:41

Understand Empress. Have you checked out the specialist asthma advice in the OP link?

I'm not sure what else we can be expected to do whether someone is 10 miles or 10 mins away, other than break the cycle from hand to face with wash and not touching, and keeping our distance as much as possible.

The education from the start here has been poor from the top, and it's worrying.

No-one should have to be looking around for it.

letter to parents, the school said the pupil had shown no symptoms after self-isolating for 14 days as a precaution, so returned to school at the end of last week.

But the child felt ill over the weekend and was diagnosed yesterday, and is currently isolating at home.

I wonder if the pupil was positive for the virus when self isolating, but no symptoms means they weren't tested.

So as discussed threads back, the incubation period can be more than 14 days, so there could be loads of people coming out of isolation that are carrying the virus?

@Wehttam

Trojan virus would have been a good name for it. They missed a trick there.
I do admit that this virus does look like an economic weapon to deal with an aging population, but then most predators large and small go for the old and the weak. The flu hits the same demographic. It would be more suspicious if it went for the young and healthy.
Whether it came from a bat or whatever is irrelevant. As the human population increases, and we travel as we do, we create an environment for these things, and this will happen again. It's nature.

santoslhalperrr · 09/03/2020 09:47

My GP is a pretty pragmatic person. He said the guidance they're getting is around 80% of people who get it are probably going to experience nothing more than a cold. Me likes those odds.

I'm pregnant so obviously concerned but even the GP said the data is suggesting that as long as you manage any fever it's probably fine.

Might go panic buy one thermometer now.

I have a dry cough, slight temperature, aches, fatigue and it is on my lungs a bit. From being a 10k+ steps a day sort of person, I am having quite a few little lie downs.

Do I have a corona virus - very likely
Do I have Covid 19 - very unlikely.

But, what if community spread is much wider than known?
I have not been travelling or in known contact with a case. i don't meet any criteria for testing. I like in a small backwater town, should be very low risk.
I could just be one of those mild cases, in which case, I could be useful in a couple of weeks/months when more people have it and jobs need doing (care home etcetera).
I could be one of thousands of people who have a rather boring cold that just happens to have similar symptoms to a mild case.

Without a good system of community testing nobody knows.
I'm off work and socially restricting but not self isolating.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 09:49

Timeline ... average (median) time between acquiring and symptoms is 5 days, up to 14 days for isolation
Mild./moderate symptoms up to 7 days (like other colds)
Those that run into trouble starts, around day 6 which can then go into a more prolonged illness...so at the very end of symptoms (which may be absent during that time, i.e. when back at school)

Thats a summary based on whittys words in the video link in the OP

@santoslhalperrr lots of probably there, just as misleading as it will probably be Armageddon.
I find it concerning how it appears people in charge seek to minimize the symptoms thus making people less concerned and thus less likely to take precautions. I had some teenagers around yesterday and those whose parents said it's just a cold were noticeably less inclined to wash their hands.

Legislation is being brought in to put an end to wild animals in markets, because of this situation now.

Wild animals gets incredibly stressed in such alien and cramped environments and it can cause expression of viruses.

I heard this maybe a couple of weeks back, will go search and report back

Some people have talked about having a Corona party to get the disease over and done with.
Whilst I doubt this would be a good idea, I did read a story in the mirror yesterday about a company wanting people to test a vaccine on. They mentioned the figure of £3500. You would be quaranteed for a while. I imagine there is a strict criteria of age etc.

EmpressSuiko · 09/03/2020 09:59

Thank you @usernameishistory I have done and it’s just usual asthma advice when sick really so I’m trying not to worry too much, my father is a concern but again he doesn’t have much contact with people but my mother works in a pub.
They don’t know anyone who has travelled recently but as we don’t know much about community spreading or locations here the worry is always at the back of my mind.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 10:03

We live in a flat but with a park nearby, and a communal garden. If we had to self isolate / quarantine would it be possible to go out for a walk if stayed away from people? I have two boys and not sure we'd cope being inside for two weeks.

A Disneyland Paris spokesman says a staff maintenance worker tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend adding the resort remains open

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 10:05

@WouldShouldCould Yes I think minimisation has negative consequences just as panicking people does as well.
And yes 80% of people who get it will have it mildly. A lot of us I suspect are in the 20% who are more likely to get it more extremely.]

Even for the 80% it must be more than a mild cold as WHO are estimating this group will need an average of 1-2 weeks off work sick. You don't take time off with a mild cold. A mild cold is a runny nose and a bit of a headache. I am suspecting that some of the 80% will have that, but most will have symptoms at a level of a bad cold, so nothing to worry about.
The 20% are those though who if they live will need an estimated 3-6 weeks to recover enough to go back to work (WHO's figures). And some will need hospital treatment. If 60% of the population get this virus, that means 12% of the population will need 3-6 weeks to recover from it at home. That is a lot of people and will put a strain on services.

An update on Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe

The Free Nazanin campaign said in a statement on Sunday night:

[A doctor] confirmed to her that her symptoms were clearly a virus and were consistent with coronavirus but he also confessed he was unable to test her with a testing kit ... The doctor, however, did reassure Nazanin that since her symptoms had stabilised it was likely a positive sign that she was hopefully soon going to start to recover.
