I’m sorry if this has been posted before ... I’ve missed a few (!) Pages

www.google.com/amp/s/www.thelocal.it/20200308/coronavirus-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-quarantine-measures-in-northern-italy/amp

Interesting info about what the quarantine means, particularly the 1 metre rule.

DonkeyKong2019 · 08/03/2020 20:40

I find it really interesting that in a local group on Facebook that actually attitudes are suddenly making quite a drastic u-turn now that there is a case locally. There's been a definite shift.

I'm in South Devon, DD goes to college in Torbay, her college is 1/4 mile from the village on the news.
We know there are a certain amount in Torbay confined, but what pissed me off is not knowing where the other 17 odd cases are in Devon.

We have a right to know, especially as down here we always get a sense of being away from 'news'.
DD has been very ill for 2 weeks, but not in the let's test criteria.
Fever, cough, glands up.
I haven't really thought it's covid19, in fact she was tested for mumps in the first instance, but now, not knowing where the other cases are makes me wonder.
She or I could have passed something on, although she's not left the house except to go to the GP last week.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 08/03/2020 20:43

@seasmize that article was posted on the last thread and I mentioned this then... The hospital the doctor works at is a private, small hospital and quite highly criticised for poor quality of care. It's obvious that such a hospital is going to find itself out of its depth in this kind of situation.

Laks0007 · 08/03/2020 20:43

I wonder if there are any long term effects?

Some viruses lead to higher levels cancers like HPV, H.pylori, HIV, EBV etc.

Anyone heard anything?

unluckyagain · 08/03/2020 20:43

I agree with others that anyone anxious should step away from these threads. There are people on here fuelling your fear and anxiety. Take a walk, read a book, get out into the real world where people are carrying on with their lives.

This is absolutely not the end of the world, but people on here will try to tell you it is. Take care, look after your hand hygiene and enjoy life.

Life is fragile. I know, after losing 2 members of my immediate family in car accidents.

SnoozyLou · 08/03/2020 20:43

@Youngatheart00 I think that's what they offer for flu vaccine testing too.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 08/03/2020 20:43

I understand that is is important for a population not to panic in a situation like this but I think there is a valid case that many people are not sufficiently concerned or informed enough to change their behaviours.

Just watching Crufts, football, many other items show that people aren't taking this seriously.

The scientific advice is that we should be taking it seriously.

And Italy is showing us that we should be taking it seriously.

If I have anxiety, it is not as a result of the discussion in this thread; it is about the disconnect between

what we are told by government/WHO i.e. serious threat, not a drill, pull out all stops-

and what is happening i.e. wash your hands, cross your fingers and sing Que Sera.

Fourducksate · 08/03/2020 20:44

@ofwarren

I reuse to click on that link! 😠

Bearbehind · 08/03/2020 20:44

What is also frustrating is when you are actually involved in working on the frontline with suspected cases, taking advice from people who have spent their lives working in public health and epidemiology and trying not to panic people.

Only to find a load of so called 'experts' on the internet actively fuelling panic, spreading or condoning the spread of misinformation and demanding school closures (which would mean me and the majority of my colleagues would not be able to work), and people nicking the hand gel from sick patients beds.

^^ This

Think about the impact your speculation is having on those who are really having to deal with this?

myrtleWilson · 08/03/2020 20:44

I find the attempts to stop some posters posting dressed up as "be kind to yourself" a bit hypocritical. As many have said, it is a chat forum... anyone can join in. If posts are breaking TG then report and MNHQ will delete if necessary - they have deleted posts for personal attacks I note.

It is a fast evolving situation and not everyone reads the thread so we have the same information posted many times over which can be a bit of an onslaught. The thread has good information and links, it also has on occasion a rather breathless sense to it. More of the former and less of the latter would be a good balance imo.

myrtleWilson · 08/03/2020 20:45

Just to clarify by "this thread" I don't just mean number 17 - I am referring to the thread of threads as much as this one.

todayisnottuesday · 08/03/2020 20:45

It's a fine line between information and scaremongering. I think some people on these threads love the drama and are quite enjoying it all. Unfortunately, there'll be some lurkers who shouldn't be following the threads, but will be and will be massively anxious and it'll be hugely detrimental to their mental health

This is my worry too. Earlier threads seemed far more sensitive to this and more considered. I'd advise anyone with anxiety to stick to official sources and advice, not the media, not here.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 20:46

@todayisnottuesday Noone on here has claimed to be a "so called experts"
We are just expressing opinions, as happens on any other thread here

Several of us have said why we don't think closing schools would be appropriate at the moment,
but some of us also think parents should be allowed to keep their kids home if the want, without penalty

re handgel:
There have been excellent posts explaining why soap is the best option for ordinary bods like us

I'm only using soap
(except at the gym where they have gel dispensers on the walls and ask us to use it)

Laniakea · 08/03/2020 20:47

My eldest has a week in Rome in September - she’s watching with interest but not really expecting to go. The owner of the air B&b she has booked has been in touch to say as things stand he will refund her.

My elderly MIL is still planning to go on her cruise to Lisbon-Barcelona-Livorno-Rome-Malta. Departing on March 11th.

Utterly insane. We’ve already told her we won’t be visiting for two weeks after she gets back ... her ‘safety’ plan is to avoid ppl spreading who sneeze & anyone of looks Chinese. Oh & dh is a total wanker for suggesting she cancels.

I would be speechless but she’s representative of the majority of the population imo.

Restrictions should only apply to other people.

God it’s depressing.

Bearbehind · 08/03/2020 20:47

Thanks for your support shanghai and sucking

I think some people need to take a long hard look at what their speculation and hypothesising is actually trying to achieve

SnoozyLou · 08/03/2020 20:49

@thesunwillout We all had a hideous bug a week before all this started. I felt like my femurs has shattered, and a neck in my throat swelled up so much I could hardly breath. Partner had it worse, and ended up with kidney pains after. 2 year old DS was really poorly and ended up with ear infection and burst eardrum. I think it was some form of flu as mine was milder and I'd had the jab, but I couldn't take much for it as I'm pregnant.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 20:49

U.S. coronavirus deaths have risen to 21, with all but three victims in Washington state. The number of nationwide infections has passed 400. The outbreak has stranded passengers on cruise ships off both coasts, and has forced some school closings.

DonkeyKong2019 · 08/03/2020 20:50

Can I just add that I'm incredibly anxious and I actually find these threads really helpful. I feel I have been able to get a lot more of the straight from source info and can ignore the papers. Without these threads I wouldn't know that children are generally very safe. I wouldn't know that when the kids do get it that they really need to be kept away from vulnerable people. I think it comes down to each person to be a grown up and avoid if it doesn't help.

Allaboutthatbass · 08/03/2020 20:50

This thread is moving very fast and my post got a bit lost above. If people want all the facts, I highly recommend viewing this. I’ll repost my earlier post underneath

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000ghsb/select-committees-live-coronavirus-committee

For anyone interested, this is a long watch but covers everything about the uk approach. Its the Chief Medical Officer and his deputy outlining the known facts, plans and reasoning for the Health and social care Select Committee on March the 5th. I found it very calming actually - there are some great minds working on the UK response and approach. And a lot of people’s questions on a range of topics are answered within it.

SnoozyLou · 08/03/2020 20:51

*gland in my throat

Michelleoftheresistance · 08/03/2020 20:53

Thanks Bass that's an interesting link.

todayisnottuesday · 08/03/2020 20:53

Everyone has a 'hide' button. Reading is not compulsory. I've reported the trolling

Everyone also has the right to read what they like, and disagree with what they like, particularly when they are worried that vulnerable people may be reading and adversely affected by opinions quoted as fact. That is not trolling, which actively intends to cause harm, it is the opposite.

MissPoldark · 08/03/2020 20:53

@ofwarren
I remember that Thailand also treated a number of patients with HIV drugs.
The trouble is that as the doc in the article says

“It’s potentially a good treatment. But in the absence of a controlled trial we don’t know whether these people would have recovered anyway.”

I wonder if they’re also trying it in Italy?
