Will you go ahead with Easter travel plans

Just curious as to whether people that have holidays booked over Easter plan to go ahead with their trips?

DSis is on the one hand insisting that her DCs primary should shut but at the same time has no intention of cancelling her family holiday in Europe over Easter Confused

We're going skiing in Norway, I'm glad it's not the Alps but other than that it's too early to say.

I have a work trip to a country neighbouring Italy at the end of April, I'm more worried about that being cancelled, so I'm not booking yet.

RoyalMail · 08/03/2020 14:07

@Throughthegate — I was under the impression that London has around 40 cases. In a city of 8.9 million people, can you really call that “hard hit”? I know the numbers are likely to rise but we should be careful not to use exaggerated or inflammatory language to describe the situation. Using terms like “hard hit” to describe a place where a few millionths of one percentage point are currently affected is not only inaccurate but likely to cause further panic and irrational behavior. That is not a good thing.

Bottleofcorona · 08/03/2020 14:13

I think as long as you could cope with being quarantined or with being in hospital in the country you are heading to (assuming they have any spare beds by then) then go. Personally I am not going as we usually do but hadn’t booked anywhere so no loss.

JassyRadlett · 08/03/2020 14:17

Particularly when on a pure percentage of population basis, the North East of England and Devon (incl Torbay) seem to be worst affected currently.

Though that is fairly meaningless when dealing with such small numbers and not knowing the epidemiology of the cases.

Throughthegate · 08/03/2020 14:19

Well I was being kind or trying to be, as where I am (Scotland) we have under 20 cases in the whole country so I am aware that the impact of twice that in a city (albeit a giant one) must make people worry a lot more.
But my question stands - is anyone worrying about travel at Easter from the point of view of whether they might infect someone else, rather than the concern about whether they might be infected?
I'm due to travel to Europe and will lose money if we cancel, but have concerns about what we might bring back with us (and an anxious holiday is the opposite of what we holiday for).

TSSDNCOP · 08/03/2020 14:20

We are booked to fly on the 3rd April. If the FO stop flights we will cancel, otherwise we are out £8k.

TSSDNCOP · 08/03/2020 14:27

Yes, Through given I’m not some kind of self-obsessed idiot. Right now, there is no travel ban. If that changes, so will my plans.

JassyRadlett · 08/03/2020 14:28

Misinformation is rarely kind.

I also struggle to see the ‘kindness’ in trying to make people nervous of any visitors from a particular part of the country.

On yesterday’s figures, Scotland has a 0.0003% infection rate. London‘s rate (on today’s more recent figures) is 0.00042%.

I honestly don’t know how we’re coping with the extra worry.

Random18 · 08/03/2020 14:30

We have an overnighter in March somewhere there would be lots of people.

We have a few days away in April. In UK but we are flying.

And again in May in UK and flying.

Not planning to cancel any at this time

2kidsintow · 08/03/2020 14:31

Yes... holiday booked last year for Southern Italy over Easter and still intending to go as long as the advice doesn't change for that region.
As it spreads more here the difference between the likelihood of getting infected there to getting infected here anyway will.diminish in the next few weeks.

6000 cases, mostly northern, in a country of 6,045,000 needs viewing in proportion.

bumblingbovine49 · 08/03/2020 14:32

I too wonder if anyone asks themselves whether they might be the person to bring the virus to the ' country where it all seems fine' at the moment just so they can have a holiday . Particularly if that country has a very limited healthcare system.

BackInTime · 08/03/2020 14:32

I wonder what travel insurers views are on this? If they have potentially many people who travel abroad over Easter that may possibly then require hospital treatment and possibly extended stays for families if quarantined? Who picks up the tab for this?

Ferretyone · 08/03/2020 14:33

@1066vegan

One of the problems that I see is that the numbers that we are told about are only the "known" cases. Who knows how many there are that simply have not been picked up?

I think that in Africa it would be put better "not many reported cases" as I very much doubt that there would be the infrastructure to pick 100% up.

But like you I would still go unless the official advice is "no not". I plan a trip to Italy in May. Not to the affected area but Siena which is a long way away

Namechangexyz1 · 08/03/2020 14:34

It's not just your destination, think of your out- going airport and all the thousands of people coming in from who knows where.

And yet there has not been a massive spike in cases in London where people ride the germ ridden tube.

Yes I will be going on my holidays

Aragog · 08/03/2020 14:34

At present yes.
We are supposed to be champagne tasting in France at the end of March to celebrate DD's 18th. It's all booked, checked in and paid for. Travel insurance will cover us if FOC advise changes. At the moment we are just monitoring and will make a final decision nearer the time.

Hugglespuffed · 08/03/2020 14:36

jassy of course London is more hard hit than the rest of the uk. You can see the locations online.

I'm hoping to still go to Thailand. It is hard not knowing if we will be able to go. Currently more uk cases than there.

KaptenKrusty · 08/03/2020 14:45

Travel insurers have no choice but to pay out to people who already have policies? It’s irrelevant what their thoughts on it are. Haha

CremeEggThief · 08/03/2020 14:48

We're going to Ireland for 6 days and unless the airline cancels the flights, or one of us becomes ill, we will definitely go.

Hugglespuffed · 08/03/2020 14:49

@KaptenKrusty the insurers will usually only pay out if we are told not to go.

PancakesNWaffles · 08/03/2020 14:52

Haven’t booked anything, but had plans to visit family in Ireland. Will see how things go.

KaptenKrusty · 08/03/2020 14:55

The I am aware of that that they will only pay out if cancelled (which is why I’m still going to Japan) but the Op said she wondered what what the insurers views were on this if they have to pay out for people in hospital abroad

Murraygoldberg · 08/03/2020 14:59

Trip booked for Easter and planning on going, if flights cancelled plan to drive instead

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/03/2020 15:01

Well no actually many policies don't cover coronavirus cancellation even if FCO advice changes so its really important to check that. In addition insurance companies are not silly and have been building in exclusions to certain policies for people who are now knowingly booking to travel. You really don't want to be stuck in quarantine somewhere or even worse need medical treatment for coronavirus with no health insurance.

PointlessAddict · 08/03/2020 15:03

Yes we are going, caravan break in the U.K.

If we were at home we’d still be going days out and about anyway so won’t be any different to just being at home really

KaptenKrusty · 08/03/2020 15:06

Yeah get that - but I have an annual travel insurance in place! If my flights cancelled to Japan I get the Jones back! Currently it’s not though so I have to go.
