This panic buying is ridiculous, had to go to 6 diff shops just to get loo roll

Nr out of loo roll. Weekly shop today. Aldi, tesco asda x2 and sainsburys had none I mean not even the cheap stuff or fancy patternwd type ones.

Luckily wilko had some.

Couldn't even get pasta, prob have to just get in costco not to bulk panic buy but in hope they have some. I just don't get it there as storage here is crap.

Infant formula, ds can only tolerate one. I norm buy 4 at a time. Struggled to get that even

Now I knew about the handwash etc and always have that anyway.
Tesco cleaning aisle was also bare except the likes of oven cleaner, polish.. Everything antibac or likewise was gone!

I just want to shop normally.

I must live in a part of the world where people are more laid back/don't read the Daily Mail/aren't that concerned.

All shops fully stocked. I got hand gel in local chemist and it was on offer too. Boots literally had racks and racks of paracetamol and and ibuprofen by the tills, and I did my usual big shop in Aldi and got everything I needed.

Just take it easy folks. Panic buying creates the very shortages you seek to avoid.

B1gbluehouse · 06/03/2020 23:09

Quorn, soap, loo roll, Dettol, all painkillers completely bare in our big Sainsbury. The loo roll lorry arrived though whilst I was there, heard an employee excitedly telling another member of staff that a massive lorry entirely filled with loo roll had arrived. Fun times.Smile

They’ll all restock so don’t get the panic or the outrage from those who can’t get things at this exact moment. I did an online order of paracetamol and Ibuprufen. Not a big deal.Confused

Photo of loo roll panic in Australia apparently.

bultaoreune · 06/03/2020 23:10

May be it's time people start using water to wash their bottoms. we don't clean shit out of our hands using a toilet roll then why do people think that their bottoms will get clean by a piece of paper?

B1gbluehouse · 06/03/2020 23:10

Oh yes tinned tomatoes all completely gone, every brand.

Loads in Lidl though.

GabsAlot · 06/03/2020 23:13

They better be some when i go tomorrow-thats the first thing i thought why loo roll you can improvise better than if you have no food

@bultaoreune I kind of agree (see my above post extolling the virtues of a bidet) but sometimes you need a bit of roll to ahem.. dislodge stuff.
Ideally it would be a two stage process paper and wash. Its not always practical either if you are in a hurry !

Northernsoullover · 06/03/2020 23:21

Gabsalot I'll do you a good deal Wink

Cadfaelfan · 06/03/2020 23:23

No one thinks of themselves as panic buying. Just-in-time forms of inventory ordering, only work if demand stays stable. Mumsnet has 10 million unique visitors a month. If 5% of them are buying an extra pack of loo roll 'just in case' then that's enough to clear the shelves.

Unless an equal amount aof mumsnetters are prepared to vounteer not to buy it, and risk spending a week or so in self-isolation with no toilet roll, then there's always going to be shortages.

magentastardust · 06/03/2020 23:24

No antibac in the Tesco or Asda beside us. Also only Gin and Tonic scented handsoap left , rest of the shelves empty..just tried to book my click n collect Tesco slot as usual and no slots or delivery slots for next few days grrrr

Still lots of toilet roll everywhere though!

Titsywoo · 06/03/2020 23:27

Im in surrey and every supermarket ive been to this week has been out of loo roll. Ive got about 50 rolls but only because its one of the things i bulk buy at costco (the ones i have were bought in January so no panic buying here). Also noticed paracetamol and ibuprofen out of stock everywhere but not much else.

Fatted · 06/03/2020 23:28

My local Asda tonight looked like a swarm of locusts had been. It was mainly loo roll, pasta, passata and beans that was cleared out.
I'd sooner get bloody sick than live off pasta and beans for a fortnight.

FurrySlipperBoots · 06/03/2020 23:28

'We are a household of 4 and have 3 toilets and go through about 9 rolls in 2 weeks.'

I must be doing something wrong because there is 2 of us and 9 rolls last us maybe 2 weeks

@WalkingDeadTrainee Do you use it to blow your nose, or literally just after using the loo? 4.5 rolls each a week is truly staggering!

TurnOnItsHead · 06/03/2020 23:28

Lancashire -
The 3 shops I visited were fully stocked - apart from hand sanitiser - with rice, pasta, tinned stuff, toilet rolls, cleaning products, ibuprofen, paracetamol etc. etc.
The only thing I couldn’t find (and that I really wanted) was Charlie Bighams lasagne - has everyone been panic buying that?

Babyroobs · 06/03/2020 23:29

No Paracetamol in my local Coop tonight and I got the last pack of toilet rolls. The only antibac wipes available were biodegradable ones at £7 a packet.

WhereverIMayRoam · 06/03/2020 23:29

I think it’s understandable that people are buying extra of certain items, after all it’s possible that any of us could be asked to self isolate with no notice. It seems sensible that those of us who are able to have a buffer in place do so while the “just in time” system is working so that if things become more scarce down the line, priority can be given to the elderly, the sick and people who simply can’t afford to stock up on necessities. By buffer I mean a bit extra in reserve, not a trolley load of anything Hmm (except maybe wine).

Unfortunately social media and the 24 hour news cycle creates anxiety in people - Australia had a tp shortage but some of the media coverage might have given the impression it was a UK problem if you didn’t read past the headline (and let’s be honest a lot of people don’t)! Those stories and pictures of empty shelves circulated and people started stockpiling. The tales of shortages spread faster than a virus Winkand now even more people will want to buy extra tomorrow...

If it makes anyone feel better I read an article where one of the big supermarkets confirmed they’ve tonnes of bloody toilet roll, it’s just that people are buying it faster than they can deliver to stores! If people can wait til Monday I’m pretty sure the shelves will be full again Smile.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 06/03/2020 23:30

I last bought bogroll 2 weeks ago...so its not my fault

(Though really want to go to the wholesalers tomorrow just to be nosy)

Aesopfable · 06/03/2020 23:31

they were fully stocked with everything. Except eggs! But that was apparently a cock up from the supplier.

TypingError · 06/03/2020 23:35

A pack of 9 lasts me and DH a sodding month!
Crikey. We use one every two days. Depends on how often you go I suppose.

AngelicaKauffman · 06/03/2020 23:36

It's interesting... is the risk of this disease equal in most countries around the world? Because where I live, there is no shortage of anything at supermarkets or pharmacies. I'm pretty sure nobody is stockpiling. Is it all about how it's being portray in the media? Although it's in the news a lot here, the coverage seems much less panicky and pervasive than it is in the UK.

Ladolcevida · 06/03/2020 23:37

I live in Putney, London. Boots on Putney High St said sanitiser sells out daily. You need to be there at 9am to buy it. They had no liquid soap left either. I have 2 children aged 9 and 3 and I have been making sure we all wash hands more frequently both to protect ourselves but also to minimise risk of us spreading any contamination to anyone else. Today I popped along to East Sheen and thought I would buy some handwash there. None left in Tesco, Superdrug, Waitrose! I bought bars of soap instead, just as effective. It makes for an interesting study of the herd instinct. Understandable but we must keep things in perspective. It is interesting to read of actual experiences rather than the headlines designed to catch max attention.

DBML · 06/03/2020 23:38

Been to Tesco and Asda this evening. They were completely out of bath foam and antibacterial wipes!
I really need to clean my shower windows too 😤

PinkCrayon · 06/03/2020 23:43

No panic buying where I live. I do know that my family/friends who live down south have seen toilet roll running low and no soap in some shops.
No one cares here. Plenty of everything.

Wilmalovescake · 06/03/2020 23:48

It’s funny how people think everyone else are panic buyers whereas they themselves are just “stocking up in a few bits”.

I’ve been over buying slightly each week for about six weeks now in my weekly shop. Extra pasta and tins one week, extra loo roll one week, cat food one week, and so on. I did it like that to spread the cost mainly. We’ve probably got about three weeks of freezer, cupboard, toiletries and household stuff in now.

You can be as cool and laidback about it as you want but the fact is that we’ve had a unique opportunity to watch this play out in other nations for weeks now and it’s stupid not to learn from them. It is entirely likely that many of us will get it to some degree of severity and be unwell for a couple of weeks and others need to self isolate. If you want to shower your arses clean during that time go for it. I’ll keep using bog roll thanks.
