Cuomo says the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in New York has risen to 76, up from 44 yesterday

Freezingold · 07/03/2020 17:23

It would be interesting to see what people are stopping?

I’ve stopped going to cafes as much, and when I do I wash my hands before and after.
I have a teenager who won’t be stopped from his gym, parties, gatherings and school - so I’m just telling him to wash his hands a lot.
Smaller child is carrying on with outside school activities. Although a party in a soft play soon - oh no! He’d devastated if he can’t go.
DH working for a huge company. He initially panicked. Now acting as if nothing is wrong. He’s socializing a lot.
I’m going for walks and working from home. So basically all my family is going to give it to me! Confused

Thinking about cancelling a holiday soon - it includes lots of kids activities and clubs - what do people think?

seasmize · 07/03/2020 17:23

There are 567 patients in ICU in Italy currently. In China over half the patients that ended up in ICU died. Hopefully they do better in Italy. If not current CFR = 7-8%.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 17:25

I haven’t stopped anything - so clubs (music / horseriding) all go plus socialising. These can stop pretty easily though, not overly committed.

But I’m a typical late booker for holidays so have nothing booked and will wait and see what happens.

usernameishistory · 07/03/2020 17:26

The Italy figures have always been alarming, as have China's.

There is no scientifically randomised test studies on which to base rate of spread, or CFR.

So fucked off about this. It could be making CFR, and spread rate so much higher than it actually is.

We have no idea the affect rate. As all of us currently suffering odd symptoms do not form part of the figures.

My dad's a structural engineer. He is currently doing an emergency project for our local hospital for some sort of corona unit. Looks like they are doing a temporary building to increase capacity

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 17:27

That’s good DonkeyKong

onemouseplace · 07/03/2020 17:28

We haven't stopped anything yet either - I went to the theatre last night and was actually surprised that it was completely full and the bus on the way back was rammed as well. I have a slight sense of wanting to get out and do stuff whilst we still can, obviously following hand washing precautions etc.

VivaLeBeaver · 07/03/2020 17:29

I have to go to work.....in a university where I’m mixing with hundreds of students. So I don’t really see the point in stopping social activities......I had been thinking of stopping gym classes. But I’m more at risk walking round campus, teaching students than I am in a gym class of 20.

I’ve stopped going to supermarkets though, am online shopping along with the corner shop instead.

I have to go to London next week and am taking the train.....then I normally go on the tube. Was wondering whether to take a taxi instead.....but if I’ve been on a packed train what’s the point?

DonkeyKong2019 · 07/03/2020 17:29

He's not really gone into details but he was on site Thursday and Friday and he said it's for corona patients. Will be interesting to see what occurs

onemouseplace · 07/03/2020 17:30

I am, however, not booking anything in for the next couple of months that can't be cancelled, just in case.

I'm mentally resigned to it now - DD has a couple of exciting school events coming up we've just heard about, and my first thought was that there is no way they are actually going to go ahead.

usernameishistory · 07/03/2020 17:30

Those at risk from family bringing it home, family need to shower upon return and get into house clothes.

Hang outer clothes in hot space to kill virus

Me too OneMouse, still very few cases. R4 was good for this today when an expert was asked if people should stop going out (he said no, and he was older).

I am a bit concerned as my parents are here mid-April and have booked everything from opera to ballet every day but I’ll wait and see.

Ciwirocks · 07/03/2020 17:31

We haven’t stopped going out, the kids are still in school so I don’t see the point in staying in at the weekend for them to go and mix with hundreds of kids on monday. We are washing hands much more though, using hand gel and trying to avoid touching our faces when out.

Literally no one in real life seems to give a stuff! The info coming out of Italy is terrifying and we are doing nothing to stop it happening here. Everyone I speak to thinks I am crazy.

QueenofmyPrinces · 07/03/2020 17:32

He is currently doing an emergency project for our local hospital for some sort of corona unit. Looks like they are doing a temporary building to increase capacity

About 4 weeks ago we had a section of our ward cordoned off and restructured to make way for potential corona virus patients which we all found quite ridiculous to be honest, we said it was a waste of time and all it was doing was blocking beds off that other patients might need etc.

Those bed spaces have stood unused for the last month but nobody is laughing now because I think things are about to change....

Freezingold · 07/03/2020 17:32

Maybe I should get them to change clothes.

At the moment I’m just getting them to wash hands thoroughly and clean phones. It’s difficult to judge the right level of response.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 17:33

Dc and dh walk in and wash hands. That’s it though.

RedToothBrush · 07/03/2020 17:33

Hopefully they do better in Italy. If not current CFR = 7-8%.

No that's not true. That's hugely misleading.

Italy are now only testing people with symptoms. Therefore lots of asymptomatic cases are not being recorded because of the criteria bring used.

You can not guess at CFR without understanding and trying to measure the scale of asymptomatic cases.

MollyMoss · 07/03/2020 17:34

Italy reports 1,247 new cases of coronavirus and 36 new deaths, raising total to 5,883 cases and 233 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

How long has it taken for Italy to go from 200 cases to 1247 cases?

LarkDescending · 07/03/2020 17:34

This piece from The Atlantic is interesting re the US position. Alarming findings re the lack of reporting transparency and also the very limited testing capacity in some states. E.g. Oregon - max 40 people per day: Pennsylvania “about a dozen”.

usernameishistory · 07/03/2020 17:34

Indeed, nobody is laughing now

All a bit grim, especially as no-one has any idea which direction it will hit them from.

Thats also what I find shocking Lark

Truly sick of seeing meaningless stats

Bucharest reports first case of coronavirus, one of 4 new cases in Romania so far today, raising country's total to 12 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

MollyMoss · 07/03/2020 17:38

Sorry Italy actually have over 4000 cases, don't they? When did their first case show?

HeIenaDove · 07/03/2020 17:39

@IrmaFayLear @Jumpingintotheabyss

Unless there is clarification on things ive mentioned previously poorer people who may get quarantined will have no choice but to break it.
