@Eeyoresstichouse

But the people who work in schools are educated, intelligent people are they not? Surely they have the brains to implement some simple measures. Here is a list of some of the things that my DC’s school is doing:

•Reminders, via posters and •announcements, of the importance of regular and thorough hand washing
•extra hand washing stations
•supplies of tissues and hand sanitiser in all classrooms
•an encouragement to avoid shaking hands during normal social interactions, at the Sign of Peace at Mass and in sport
•the chalice not shared during Communion
•door handles wiped daily, with 24-hour sanitising cleanser
•students to disinfect their computer keyboards, phones and iPads on a daily basis (wiping with a cloth that has been dampened with disinfectant).

It’s just basic common sense!

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 06/03/2020 09:06

BunsyGirl just the Public Health England/Govt advice followed where I work. We always have sanitiser for visitors and at signing in point, but whether we could get any more now is debatable.
I have seen a few children cough into their elbow but tbh they are in such close contact much of the day I’m not sure what good that will do, plus there are as many who cough all over the person next to them or on desks etc.
I went to a group I attend regularly yesterday. 3 people are off to Italy, Border with Italy and Spain in the next day or so. I don’t think I will be attending that group in the next few weeks!
I know it’s going to take hold here, but the airport and ski equip sharing concerns me about their travel. I wish I had their insouciance Confused

Random18 · 06/03/2020 09:06

Someone speaks sense re working from home and they get accused of being pathetic Hmm

Many Organisations can simply not close everything down and say work from home.

I bet many are frantically looking at what they.have available and trying to manage as best they can in such a scenario.

But its not necessarily as easy as just shutting an office and getting everyone to work from home.

Exochord · 06/03/2020 09:07

The royals still seem to be out and about going to events. Is this a sign that the risk is still very low?
Imo it’s calculated to reduce public panic. You see them out and about and think it’s safe. But they’re in Ireland which only has a dozen or so cases and no doubt their advisers know the exact location of every single one. Everyone who gets near them will have been vetted for recent travel. And if they do get sick they’re guaranteed the best care in a private hospital.

The rest of us are in the shit. Particularly because HCPs are already refusing to work with coronavirus cases because it makes them feel anxious.

furrytoebean · 06/03/2020 09:11

Particularly because HCPs are already refusing to work with coronavirus cases because it makes them feel anxious.

Where is the evidence of this?

Fourducksate · 06/03/2020 09:11

@BunsyGirl. I emailed school last week, as all we had was an email linking to PHE, I asked if they had gone over hand washing with the pupils (secondary school) and if gel was available at computer stations which are in all departments.

I was told that they hadn’t been able to get any gel due to shortages.

This is a massive school that uses touch pads and finger print tech. to pay for lunch. ds says that there when you are washing hands others are moaning if you spend too much time, and as there are t enough basins, loads just don’t bother. 😳

I envy others whose school are communicating.

ShanghaiDiva · 06/03/2020 09:18

We are all intelligent enough to take action ourselves. When I flew from China in January I wiped the tray table, arms rests and touch screen with wipes. Nobody told me to, but it was a sensible precaution given the superficial cleaning that happens on aircraft.
We can advise our children to wash hands etc. We are all capable of independent thought and action.

cologne4711 · 06/03/2020 09:24

Just been into my local shopping centre to buy something for dinner tonight and can report that my local Superdrug has Calpol but Waitrose has no loo roll, very little rice/pasta/cleansing wipes.

Newjez · 06/03/2020 09:27

Sorry if already mentioned but hand gel is in my Lidl. Limited to two per customer. They had loads.

peridito · 06/03/2020 09:28

Hand sanitisers no good ??

Dr Andrew Kemp* on BBC London with Vanessa Felz - he reckons they leave a residue which can make matters worse .

He spoke about bacteria though and not viruses. I understand CV has fatty covering which alcohol does attack .

Said something about hand stuff having sugar in them .Also something about a lot of them not sold in USA because of false claims .

Kemp gone so far as to say
If you are not able to wash your hands at a sink with soap and water, you may wish to use a hand foam or gel. If you do use an alcohol gel, you must reapply it every 15 minutes or wash your hands with soap and water within 15 minutes, as the antimicrobial action of these gels is short lived

what do we think ?

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 06/03/2020 09:30

Smart working has been something my company has done for years! It saves on desk space and when I did actually go into the office I'd only do so once or twice a week. Since moving much further away that has reduced to once a month. Meetings are held through video conference facilities / dial in globally. This is not a new thing!! I understand those in customer / client facing roles can't do this as easily however if those who can did stay home it would slow down the rate of infection surely? I'm not just thinking of myself here, I don't want to catch it obviously but more so I don't want to spread it to those more vulnerable within our community. Personally I think the time has come for companies to re-think WFH before they have lots of sickness running through the organisation and no one working! Impressed with the school who've been practical about 'what might be' I can't see the government closing schools because then parents can't work and the economy suffers potentially. A family member works in business travel.. she's booked on flight all week and cancelled over 500! Big corporate companies have a blanket ban.

fezzesarecool · 06/03/2020 09:31

Glad to see in my area the penny has dropped and people are now openly talking about it and measures they can take to be more pro active then just wash your hands

WaterSheep · 06/03/2020 09:34

A British man has tested positive for the new coronavirus in Thailand... The man had flown from London via Hong Kong.

Newjez · 06/03/2020 09:36

@Langbannedforsafeguardingkids

When we had the snows a few years back, my company tried to work from home. We discovered we had a limit of five hundred users. It took a day to up this and then everything was fine. It would probably be a bigger hit to the internet if schools were off, as all the kids would be gaming. We should be able to cope with adults working.

mamasiz · 06/03/2020 09:40

Thanks @Youngatheart00 - I won’t receive sick pay unless I get a sick note, but I’m not sick and don’t want to waste a GPs time (or go to a busy GP surgery) or have it on my sickness record. I was speechless yesterday. No acknowledgement of my pregnancy or having an already unwell child, just a suggestion that I have anxiety. I am worried, yes, but not without good reason, and not enough to render me incapable of working (from home!)

QueenofmyPrinces · 06/03/2020 09:41

Apparently there was a confirmed corona case yesterday at a GP surgery about 10 minutes from where I live.

My FIL aged 69 and with a heart condition, is so worried. I think he’s going to hole himself up in his house.

I was talking to my husband again last night about our upcoming holiday to Turkey (he’s very blasé about it all) and he said that if I didn’t want to go then he’d just take the children on his own..... so I told him that I wouldn’t want him to take the children and so he could go on his own.

WaterSheep · 06/03/2020 09:41

Vatican city has reported its first case. Spokesman Matteo Bruni said the discovery was made on Thursday and that outpatient services in Vatican clinics had been suspended to sanitize the areas.

Newjez · 06/03/2020 09:41

@fezzesarecool

I think it's such a tragedy that we missed the opportunity to contain this. It wouldn't have been that hard. I blame the lax government and the "it's only flu" brigade. If we had banned travel over half term and Easter, encouraged wfh from the start and been a bit more on the ball with travellers returning, we could have kept the number below a hundred until the summer. By luck we are behind other European countries, but that just means we get to see what will happen to us.
We will be up to 1000 by April, and in a hundred deaths. If April and may are cold, god help us.

Exochord · 06/03/2020 09:44

Particularly because HCPs are already refusing to work with coronavirus cases because it makes them feel anxious.
Where is the evidence of this?
PP earlier on this thread mentioned refusing work tasks related to coronavirus cases because it would cause anxiety.

Glittercandle · 06/03/2020 09:44

DH had a business trip planned to SAN Francisco in a couple of weeks but his company have cancelled all foreign travel - makes it all seem more real.

Horehound · 06/03/2020 09:46

I've woken up not feeling well and baby has a snotty nose and out of sorts.
My uncle visited me two days ago, the say after skiing in Austria but very close to Italy.
I'm worried

Spacecadetagain · 06/03/2020 09:47

I went to my GPs yesterday for routine blood tests . The surgery had removed all magazines and children’s toys and removed the touch screen facility . I was grilled as to whether I had any symptoms before going into the waiting room . The nurse walked through two sets of doors and back to take me to her room then immediately grabbed the stuff for my blood test without washing her hands first . I stopped her and said could you wash your hands please . She looked surprised and said ok.. and I said .. and could you please get some fresh stuff to take my blood test as you’ve walked through those doors not knowing what has touched them . She duly agreed and admitted that she hadn’t even thought about that ! I was gobsmacked .. what’s the point in them being so cautious on arrival if the staff themselves aren’t going to be vigilant about hand washing ... sigh

Reastie · 06/03/2020 09:50

The comment that keeps going around from doctors about it’ll die out in the summer because of the warmer weather like normal seasonal flu. Given Singapore and other warm countries are having issues surely that argument doesn’t hold?

fezzesarecool · 06/03/2020 09:50

Newjez Absolutely agree with this

I’m so pleased to se my GP’s is taking measures now to triage people via phone for the pre booked appointments so they are doing what they can

QuietlyTerrified · 06/03/2020 09:55

God, I have to attend GP surgery at beginning of May, peak virus time, for my B12 jab. I am going to try to get the first appointment in a morning and hopefully be straight in and out. I might take a mask too if things are really bad.
