The information coming out of Italy right now is scaring me.

Based on their statistics and what they are saying about people in hospital, I do think some more aggressive measures are needed.

First and foremost, travel bans to Italy and self isolation for everyone, and proper advice re- self isolation for those returning from Germany and France and other continental European counties.

SansaSnark · 06/03/2020 18:57

*The Czech Republic is ordering all nationals returning to the country from Italy to subject themselves to 14 days quarantine, with a fine of up to 3m Czech crowns (£102,000) for anyone who refuses to obey.

According to guidance posted online by the ministry:

With immediate effect all Czech citizens returning from Italy after 7th March 2020 must without delay notify their GP of the fact by telephone or other means without personal contact.

The Czech ministry of health estimates that there are about 16,500 Czechs in Italy.

(With thanks to Twitter user @DickSavagecz for help with the translation.)*

This is the sort of thing we should be doing imo.

Thank you so much for that link GPwife2411 - fingers crossed it comes as we are out locally

hankyspanky · 06/03/2020 19:05

@GPwife2411 it definitely isn't a scam. I've ordered the same and it was delivered on the date and time as promised.

neeting · 06/03/2020 19:08

Thank you for that, have ordered some using PayPal so if it doesn't arrive I can get a refund.

mrshoho · 06/03/2020 19:09

Yet in the UK schools are insisting that planned trips to Italy will still go ahead??? Italy have cancelled the Cortina world cup finals later in March.

magicrainbowbeans · 06/03/2020 19:09

Thank you GPwife I just hope scammers reading these boards don't order ridiculous quantities. I've already got 6 small bottles with funnels and as patents don't seem inclined to do anything, give them some.

SansaSnark · 06/03/2020 19:11

I think schools with planned trips to Italy between now and Easter are in a really difficult position, but I also think those trips absolutely shouldn't be going ahead.

The government need to step up and make some hard decisions regarding travel advice- but apparently the economy comes first or whatever.

Dusty01 · 06/03/2020 19:13

Sansasnark: which information coming out of Italy?

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 06/03/2020 19:17

I live in Warwickshire, just had a text from a friend, she knows somebody in our town has just been diagnosed (young woman) Haven't seen it on the news yet

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 19:18

@GPwife2411 Am I right to assume this is at regular shop price, so not being profiteered?

Just checking, as I say assume as I don't think you would have posted otherwise.

Shall I ask for the post to be deleted in a couple of hours? Would that minimise the risk of scammers seeing it? This probably sounds a bit paranoid but I completely see your point @magicrainbowbeans !

Twitney · 06/03/2020 19:20

Why aren't government doing more if they can see what is happening in Italy? Serious question, not being snarky.

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 19:21

You could post intermittently couldn't you, and then get it removed! Grin. Good idea!

re high death rate in Italy:

It is obviously increased by the number of elderly residents in care homes who caught it early on

However, I'm also wondering if they may have more of a particular mutated variant with a higher death rate:

Some scientists have suggested that in Iran
the virus may have mutated into a variant that attacks the heart more,
which would be one reason for their 5.5% death rate

(another reason that a religious dictatorship may not have great organisatiomal ability or scientific reasoning)

UPDATE: Switzerland has reported 123 new cases of coronavirus over the past day, raising the total to 210 cases and 1 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

yolofish · 06/03/2020 19:23

I think the only way to reduce travel is for the govt to ban it - I'd be quite happy with that, but if they dont and the situation is as bad everywhere then I cant quite see the point (saying this with two European short trips coming up, if we got ill we could get home quite quickly and self-isolate and thus not burden French/Dutch systems although that does nothing for anyone we might encounter along the way).

GPwife2411 · 06/03/2020 19:24

To be honest the practice manager usually buys it so I really don't know if this is the usual sales price! I've only ever bought the small bottles for personal use before. As far as I know not profiteering but wouldn't be informed enough to know this for sure.

The surgery supplier had a temp absence of stock and I got freaked out and ordered a bulk order for the surgery which filled the gap - their usual supplier is now able to deliver the backordered stock but it was helpful for a while as they don't normally give each individual receptionist a bottle etc. but I told DH that he should.

The cost was slightly less for 4 of the 5L containers than this individual 5L bottle but you would expect that when you order more than 1 I suppose and do it via a business account?

yolofish · 06/03/2020 19:25

I actually think the US situation with the care home residents is more scary than people travelling... given the general frailty of residents. And of course the fact that carers could be in short supply due to their own illness/supporting family.

mrshoho · 06/03/2020 19:27

Who knows Twitney? Two weeks ago Italy reported 11 cases and now look! They have a better healthcare system than us and they are struggling with the amount of critical patients they are treating. What the hell will we do if we get to those numbers? I'm just going to drink wine tonight 🍷. Are we sleepwalking into a nightmare or does our government have it all under control?

Kateplaysrugbyinmydreams · 06/03/2020 19:28

I just looked back at a news article from a week ago. Italy had 400 cases, 12 deaths. It's ten times that now. Really hope we aren't on that trajectory.
