Totally agree on govt information lacking badly and leading to higher levels of angst for some, and conversely, apathy from others.

Seems that the UK does not currently have capability to test more than 2000/2500 a day. If you follow the number tested figure. Yesterday 18,000 had been tested, today 20,000.

Un vaccin contre le coronavirus a-t-il été mis au point en Israël ? www.lci.fr/sante/un-vaccin-contre-le-coronavirus-a-t-il-ete-mis-au-point-en-israel-2147269.html

A vaccine within weeks from Israeli scientists. Dare we believe this?

There's nothing I hate more than hearing people say, 'It's just flu.' People who say that think the flu is the same as the common cold but just a bit worse, with a temperature. There really is no comparison

mittens most (70+%) dont know they have flu because symptoms are unremarkable, also that colds kills too?

My daughter had a serious chest infection and her first case of Sepsis in Dec 2016. Her second case of sepsis in Feb 2017. Although she has underlying health issues, she has never really gained herself back and now has fatigue that comes on if she has done anything much

Those querying the 300 number, I think a PP said they saw the number of worldwide active cases (I think on the worldometer counter) increase by 300 in 45 minutes.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 15:10

WhyNotMe You can keep him confined to house and garden if necessary. I know your preference might be for him to go to a park but it really isn't a necessity.

I think we probably went to a public park about once every three months when my DC were little. They played in the garden loads though.

TheRealHousewife · 06/03/2020 15:10

My post saying total gone up 300 was in regards to the world total via worldometers site. Apologies, I should have been more clear.

COVID-19 appears to be transmitted by respiratory droplets, and more rarely, contaminated surfaces and plumbing. It appears to be slightly more infectious than the flu (Ro 2.8 vs. 1.28)*
*R0 is the average number of people who will be infected from one contagious person.

So for every one infected person 2/3 get infected... So the numbers Will more than double for each person infected, if I've understood that correctly.
,
When public health agencies are figuring out how to deal with an outbreak, they are trying to bring R0 down to less than 1. This is tough for diseases like measles that have a high R0. It is especially challenging for measles in densely populated regions like India and China, where R0 is higher, compared to places where people are more spread out.

Measles has an RO of 12 to 18. I know its coronavirus but this helps the explosion in China.

Well immunity is built up for flu. Whilst flu mutates your immune system can fight it as it has had previous strains.

This is a NEW virus, no one has immunity so symptoms should be longer and take longer to recover.

People who keep saying its just the flu are wrong.

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 15:13

@SubordinateThatClause

US are recruiting for first trials in human for vaccine (apparently)

Everyone else says vaccines take 1 yr to 18 months.

I think it comes down to who you believe!

SistemaAddict · 06/03/2020 15:13

The actual number is going to be significantly higher. It's only low because they aren't testing everyone with symptoms. There should be an international protocol in situations like this so that every country follows the same policy for testing and action ie shutting borders and quarantine. This has been so badly handled.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 06/03/2020 15:14

I’ve had symptoms all week, breathing took a turn for worse last night so had telephone appt with GP. She said thinks I should be seen especially as in high risk group but said not to go there as she isn’t sure I won’t have it. She said try calling 111 and see what they advise. Told her I’ve done the online and it’s still only asking for those who have travelled or in contact with known cases.
She said oh I don’t know then, see how you get on..

Read a national news article just saying our nearest city’s hospital needed 69 beds as of yesterday.

Starting to feel like this is some sort of bad dream.

HerstoryInTheMaking · 06/03/2020 15:14

@Number12
You are right about R0 although it is important to remember the number is an average.

Also R0 for coronavirus is still a bit unknown. Its ranged between 2 to 6 in studies!

Orangeblossom78 · 06/03/2020 15:14

So..if the testing takes two days then these figures are from 2 days ago is that right? I wonder who many the real figures are than, as of today...guess will know by next week. Does that make sense?

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 06/03/2020 15:15

@usernameishistory will still take 18 months of trials before deemed safe. So I read anyway.

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 15:16

RO was originally being reported as 3-4

What we can't know is the basis of these figures when we dont have sufficient randomised large volume testing.

HerstoryInTheMaking · 06/03/2020 15:16

@YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus
This is why I am so worried about the tests! We need to test those with symptoms not just travel history/those with contact.

Mittens030869 · 06/03/2020 15:16

Herstoryinthemaking.I agree. I've had a bad cough and a temperature and headache for 2 weeks now and my DD2 (7) has caught whatever it is from me. I was concerned about the symptoms and enquired whether I should ask for a test for COVID-19 but they said they were only testing those who had been abroad in an infected area of had direct contact with someone confirmed as having tested positive to the virus.

Basically, the problem is that there are so many seasonal viruses at this time of year, so, when faced with anyone who doesn't fit that narrow criteria, they appear to be assuming that it's simply a winter virus.

PotholeParadise · 06/03/2020 15:17

My concern is that we have managed to eradicate so much from the world that we forget how awful some of these things can be. How much are the moderate illness people going to flood the NHS because they dont understand how bad moderate will feel

Yes. I have been noticing a lot of people on MN describing what I would term as a 'nasty cold' (I think I must have an overactive immune system or something!) as if it were really unusual, which doesn't bode well for 111, who will have to answer their calls if they get covid19.

I rather suspect that when WHO says 'mild symptoms' it may not mean what it does on the street, which is something like 'got an annoying tickly cough, and a headache that can be treated by paracetamol'.

WHO probably mean 'no hospital treatment necessary', and that's a very broad church indeed. There are a lot of ways to feel as if death would be a merciful release without medical assistance being required!

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 06/03/2020 15:18

I wonder how many (if any) of those today are results from the ICU testing they decided to undergo?
