Oh dear, I'm now really worrying about my DM, who travelled back from Africa via Lisbon and told me that there were a lot of people who were taking no care at all about where they were coughing. She's 80 years old and catches every infection going. She's coped with malaria and chest infections bug COVID-19 is very new.

On the BBC latest report it says

Currently, tests take a couple of days to provide results

So does this mean these results are from 2 days ago? Confused

Mittens030869 · 06/03/2020 14:39

As far as I can see, however, the UK total is 163 at the moment, not 300?

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 14:40

Also, the poster who asked for a link to the previous thread, also in the OP, at the top. Please let me know if its not working (as with any of the links). Thanks.

DressingGownofDoom · 06/03/2020 14:41

Where are people getting 300 from?!

Thunderpunt · 06/03/2020 14:41

@OldQueen1969 I wonder if it is because Italy haven't held back on testing - whereas here we have only been testing people who have come from affected areas? Ergo more tests carried out, more results. I worry that the UK not testing as rigorously means lots of unidentified cases here.

Abraid2 · 06/03/2020 14:42

is there any other identified reason for the big jumps in numbers of infected? I mean particular travel patterns etc? I have tried a quick google but my rather fuzzy brain is having trouble picking out the relevant points....

Apparently early on they had a super-spreader, like we did in Brighton. He seemed to be a very sociable individual and infected a lot of people before the authorities were on top of it. He hadn't been to China but had been in contact with someone who had.

WE seem to have been a bit more efficient at tracking down our super-spreader's contacts. Or perhaps we learned from seeing what had happened in Italy.

WhyNotMe40 · 06/03/2020 14:43

I am genuinely wondering wtf I am supposed to do with a 3 yo who licks railings and windows and also sucks his thumb.
I can't keep him confined to the house and garden! Today we were at a playground and he put his mouth on hand rails/bars 3 times despite me telling home not to!
I'm avoiding soft plays but I can't avoid play grounds - he needs exercising well! I'm hoping rain/frost/ sun will at least help to keep the viral load down, plus baby wipes and hand gel (if I can bloody get some) will be sufficient

username could you add this statement to your links in the OP? I think it would be useful for people to know that the Competition and Markets Authority will be taking a dim view of profiteering: www.gov.uk/government/news/cma-statement-on-sales-and-pricing-practices-during-coronavirus-outbreak

@Cheeseismylife I’ve mainly been using the radio for updates, France Info.

This website updates fairly regularly www.lci.fr/sante/en-direct-coronavirus-covid-19-9-morts-et-577-cas-confirmes-en-france-2143314.html

WhyNotMe40 · 06/03/2020 14:44

Although I am impressed with my older kids school - they have got extra lunchtime supervisors in just to supervise KS1 hand washing.... And are allowing time before school for handwashing.

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 14:45

I find it interesting theres been no notified cases of cabin crews, that spend their lives in the air exposed to everyone that has travelled from risk areas and subsequently all tested positive.

Either a) their own hygiene processes are extremely effective
b) it isnt transmitting as expected, or worried it is.
c) we're just not told
d) something else

Thanks orangeblossom!

ofwarren · 06/03/2020 14:45

After confirming its first case of #coronavirus, #Slovakia will ban flights to #Italy and school trips abroad, and will close hospitals and prisons for visits.

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 14:46

Thank you @cologne4711

Thats a very salient point yes.

Frazzled2207 · 06/03/2020 14:46

I know it would be almost impossible to stop people coming in from Italy but if FCO advised against all but essential travel the numbers coming would reduce enormously. As they could finally get money back for their cancelled flights.

I recall they told people to avoid all but essential travel to China really early on. Am baffled why they haven't here. Would be too late now.

Quartz2208 · 06/03/2020 14:47

This survivor describes feeling short of breath still after recovering - she says something like 'I cannot walk for a long time because I feel short of breath and need to sit down - and that's never happened to me before'

This I think is fairly normal after serious flu/pneumonia/respiratory disease at least it was for me and a couple of friends I know who have had that level. It took 2 months for me to approach normal

My concern is that we have managed to eradicate so much from the world that we forget how awful some of these things can be. How much are the moderate illness people going to flood the NHS because they dont understand how bad moderate will feel

tmh88 · 06/03/2020 14:48

Have they released where in Yorkshire has got it yet?

Letseatgrandma · 06/03/2020 14:48

I find it interesting theres been no notified cases of cabin crews, that spend their lives in the air exposed to everyone that has travelled from risk areas and subsequently all tested positive.

Interesting point.

Are cabin crew being routinely tested?!

OldQueen1969 · 06/03/2020 14:49

Thanks for the responses regarding Italy - all good points.

I'm really torn by this compulsion I have to stay informed and the realisation that having the information changes nothing ....... a fresh hell indeed all round........

ofwarren · 06/03/2020 14:49

#RUSSIA- Starting March 10, 2020, students who come from the North Korea, S.Korea, Italy, Iran, the France, Germany, Spain, and “other countries with an unfavorable distribution situation” will not be allowed to attend classes and work. new coronavirus infection (2019-nCoV) —👇🏻

SistemaAddict · 06/03/2020 14:49

Fresh out of my course. Just catching up on the hundreds of posts 😩

Furfockssake · 06/03/2020 14:50

@usernameishistory - weren't there two cases confirmed today in the UK of cabin crew with COVID-19?
