Not a single bottle of hand sanitizer left in my town. Work sent me out to find some and my manager thought I was lying when I told her that everywhere was sold out. Not even our national cleaning supply company can get any...

furrytoebean · 06/03/2020 13:14

After realised they are finger signed for by many . I wonder if a self isolating person would answer the door and sign for something in this way

The chances of catching the virus like this must be absolutely minimal.
If you look at the cases in China the VAST majority of spread has come from people actually living together in close proximity.

I am concerned about the virus but honestly I think that we all have to be careful to not give ourselves serious health anxiety and ocd type behaviours.
I've had germ phobia in the past when my mental health hasn't been good and it's honestly horrific. Also paradoxically it was the least healthy I've ever been due to the stress but also because I stopped eating out or socialising so stayed in not exercising.

We have to strike a balance.

Frangipanini · 06/03/2020 13:15

I watched Question Time last night which was really informative and as mentioned on another thread, I lived in HK during SARS so I do have some experience of being in a similar situation.

I have now decided that someone in my family is probably going to get Coronovirus over the next few months. That may sound defeatist, but I am not trying to be. I just need a strategy. With this in mind, what I am going to do is try and minimise it's impact if it does reach our family. So, what can I do?

  1. Increase my families immunity by doing all the things we are supposed to be doing (hand washing, clean phone, sneeze into your elbow etc.) but also try and be healthier, eat better and introduce more immune boosting foods into our diet.

  2. Make sure I have a supply of relevant medicine to cover all of us should we all get it.

Aside from this I will be going about my life as usual, with of course the exception of holidaying in Coronavirus hotspots.

According to Guardian live page

"The number of coronavirus cases has risen to 128, with one fatality, according to health authorities."

Skyejuly · 06/03/2020 13:16

I think that was the extras last night? I think the official one is 2pm

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 06/03/2020 13:18

Also, the Foreign Office should, at the least, advise against travel to Northern Italy. That would allow people (and schools in particular) to claim on their insurance and it would mean people would then be much more inclined to cancel travel arrangements.

This.

The government should be advising to WFH if you can, avoid large crowds if you can. They are throwing vulnerable people under the bus.

And yes, the economic cost of acting too late will be huge.

They're idiots (the government). There should clearly also be a COBRA meeting today not fucking Monday.

I am getting pissed off now. Having a cross your fingers and hope attitude is not going to work.

Letseatgrandma · 06/03/2020 13:19

"The number of coronavirus cases has risen to 128, with one fatality, according to health authorities

I don’t think the numbers are going to be very high if people are only being tested if they’ve been abroad/in contact with someone who’s been abroad which seems to be the case.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 06/03/2020 13:20

Also, I know there is this whole thing about not wanting people to panic but do they think people won't panic worse when they realise the government has had a shit plan which doesn't take into account expert advice and lied to us about how severe it is?

I wasn't too worried until I started reading the facts and the statements of experts. Then I was. We're not idiots and there is an internet.

I suppose Boris got away with it with the lies on the side of a bus. This is going to be a lot harder to wriggle out of.

Daily email from GP online,

[GPs told to triage appointments booked online as NHS promises free PPE
GPs have been told to triage appointments booked online and to avoid helping patients stockpile medicines during the coronavirus outbreak - as NHS officials confirmed free PPE would be delivered to practices next week.]

At least the crap government is now taking some steps to protect those most in need.

Twixes · 06/03/2020 13:23

@Frangipanini get in high doses of Vitamin C, it's what they're giving patients in China (among other things).

Kirschcherry · 06/03/2020 13:23

the guardian has now changed that post To :
The number of Dutch coronavirus cases has risen to 128, with one fatality, according to health authorities

GPwife2411 · 06/03/2020 13:24

@hankyspanky - oh thank goodness on both counts! Should have been done weeks ago though.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/03/2020 13:24

Some supermarket bigwig has said matt Hancock has totally made up what he said last night about govt working with supermarkets to ensure supplies. Been no such contact.

Welshwabbit · 06/03/2020 13:24

I think 128 is the number of Dutch cases? Not UK.

ofwarren · 06/03/2020 13:25

Reports say a second person in the UK has died after testing positive for COVID-19

hankyspanky · 06/03/2020 13:26

@Frangipanini I read somewhere else that taking Zinc daily helps boost the immune system. Home Bargains had the tubes of dissolvable tablets to make a drink of Vitamin C and Zinc £1.20 for 25.

fullofteandneedstopee · 06/03/2020 13:29

Yes apparently in Milton Keynes. I linked earlier.

GPwife2411 · 06/03/2020 13:29

DH just confirmed he got the same email - and also mentioned that in Scotland the PPE has already been delivered.

Hurray!

... along with a sh*tload of coronavirus swabs.

Which rather suggests that infected people are going to be actively encouraged to attend their GPs for testing at some point, no?

Maybe just in Scotland. Maybe the swabs are just in case. Still, concerning.

Cheeseismylife · 06/03/2020 13:30

Shopping done. I added some extras to my normal shop so we now have enough in to do isolation, although we'll be eating a lot of carbs heavy meals.
No sign of panic buying here, shelvea were well stocked except hand gel.

However, till guy was eating a snack pack of dried fruit and buts between customers, bare hands, no hand gel, touching shopping, money etc, putting his hand to his mouth then touching receipts etc. Bleeeeeuuuuuugh. Angry

FurForksSake · 06/03/2020 13:30

I don't think they should be reporting the MK death until it is actually confirmed as Covid. I am assuming they have fairly good cause to say, but people in their 80's do get pneumonias and die when there aren't pandemic viruses about.

FourTeaFallOut · 06/03/2020 13:31

Was the death on just a regular ward or where they in isolation?

FourTeaFallOut · 06/03/2020 13:31

Were Blush

fullofteandneedstopee · 06/03/2020 13:33

I did write in my previous post it was 'believed'.

PotholeParadise · 06/03/2020 13:33

Some supermarket bigwig has said matt Hancock has totally made up what he said last night about govt working with supermarkets to ensure supplies. Been no such contact.

I'm shocked. Totally shocked, I tell you.

CrapTVAddict · 06/03/2020 13:34
