And not travelling is not just to minimise personal risk - in fact as many have said personal risk may be the same in two different countries -, it's to slow spread so fewer vulnerable people get it at the same time overwhelming the NHS and therefore making it more likely people will die due to staff / bed shortages.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2020 12:39

Ît would reduce the number, because some people would be put off by the extra hassle and the expense

I have a question about stages of management if anyone knows please?

Would a later stage, with more cases, mean that they don’t bother with tests and just advise to self isolate?

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 06/03/2020 12:43

Yes, I'm sure there were people in China who flouted the ban, there always will be. The fact is most didn't, and it made a difference.

anywinewilldonow · 06/03/2020 12:46

@MaryHerbert Just deny entry to anyone who has been in Northern Italy in the last 14 days, except returning UK citizens who should be required to self isolate for 14 days. Simple.

WouldShouldCould · 06/03/2020 12:48

@nickEcave I would think open sores would be a much greater risk

OneForMeToo · 06/03/2020 12:50

I just got a rather grumpy gps receptionist as I cancelled an appointment for next week. I just don’t trust the public enough to not go in with symptoms. Don’t fancy sitting in a room of sick people for a smear. I’ll get it done when everything calms down.

justchecking1 · 06/03/2020 12:50
  • @nickEcave I would think open sores would be a much greater risk*

Theoretically not, it's not blood-Bourne as far as we know.

Obviously, open sores have their own issues though

anywinewilldonow · 06/03/2020 12:54

Also, the Foreign Office should, at the least, advise against travel to Northern Italy. That would allow people (and schools in particular) to claim on their insurance and it would mean people would then be much more inclined to cancel travel arrangements.

AutumnRose1 · 06/03/2020 12:54

“Just deny entry to anyone who has been in Northern Italy in the last 14 days”

But if they flew into another country, then drove to Italy, we wouldn’t know. Bloody Schengen.

Delatron · 06/03/2020 12:54

@yolofish Another thing to think about is insurance. I went abroad just after chemo and nobody would insure me. It’s awful and such a shame because quite often that is when you need a holiday the most. But with this extra risk insurance is key.

I really hope you get to go!

anywinewilldonow · 06/03/2020 12:56

You are never going to stop all travel so there will always be ways. It's about reducing the overall amount of travel and therefore reducing the spread.

MaryHerbert · 06/03/2020 12:59

Just deny entry to anyone who has been in Northern Italy in the last 14 days

Quite. Trains arrive at St Pancras from Paris and other European cities every hour. No way of knowing if any of the passengers have been to Northern Italy in the last 14 days.

Newjez · 06/03/2020 12:59

@bananabrain2

Do you really think the economic cost of this course of action would have outwayed a few cancelled holidays at the start? We are heading for a full blown global recession. Gfc2 with bells on. The world's central banks have no where to go. We are economically doomed. Prevention would have been so much cheaper. Still would be.

anywinewilldonow · 06/03/2020 13:00

I'm not trying to claim it's a perfect solution, but it would put many people off, and that is something. particularly coupled a with Foreign Office advisory.

Skyejuly · 06/03/2020 13:04

I'm getting anxious now for today's numbers.

NotJustACigar · 06/03/2020 13:04

I can't believe the next cobra meeting isn't until Monday. Also Johnson now claiming we're still in the "contain" phase. So basically he's still avoiding saying anything about working from home, avoiding public gatherings, etc. Exactly like last Friday - it feels like groundhog day ☹️.

And did anyone see the BBC news report just now quoting a CFR of 1% and saying that's only ten times more than flu? Nothing about not having enough respiratory equipment, the high percentage of people who need to be hospitalised, etc. You'd think the Chinese were just being big babies about the whole thing from that report!

Windy0urneckin · 06/03/2020 13:05

Does anybody know if other countries e.g France and Germany are testing on the same basis as us? I.e only travel to a now-outdated list of countries/areas and/or contact with a confirmed case. I’m trying to get a sense of our numbers.

hankyspanky · 06/03/2020 13:06

Given the situation in Italy, I can only assume any decisions the Government are making are economy based.

Another family member was due to fly out to Northern Italy on 27 Feb to a neighbouring village that was in lockdown, decided not to go so lost that airfare. Rebooked for today thinking the situation would've improved, another airfare lost. Booked another 2 flights for later this month and April with Flybe so thats even more money lost.

In the grand scheme of things, I know its only money. People are dying and this country needs to seriously rethink its non existent (as far as I can see) action plan.

Namethecat · 06/03/2020 13:07

Went shopping today in my local Morrison's and when handing over the card for points, she scanned it in my hand. I asked her if that's what they have been told to do as another member of staff did the same earlier in the week, she confirmed they had.
Later in the morning had a delivery of a book that had to be signed for by one of those screens . After realised they are finger signed for by many . I wonder if a self isolating person would answer the door and sign for something in this way ?

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 06/03/2020 13:09

Guess I'm lucky to have a ring doorbell, if it comes to self-isolation! Grin

CrunchyCarrot · 06/03/2020 13:10

I just don't understand why they aren't putting in place travel restrictions to and from Italy.

I think 'stable door' and 'horse has already bolted' come to mind here. It would be too little, too late. The time to do it was far earlier at the first hint of an outbreak. Our govt is just too slow (and too worried about the economy) to do it that quickly.
