@Ciwirocks if everyone has attitude we are well and truly fucked.

alloutoffucks · 06/03/2020 12:04

The reasons schools won't cancel kids trips abroad, is because they then become liable to refund parents. Most insurance companies will not pay out unless official advice is not to travel. Not many schools could afford to refund parents from their coffers.

Lombardy's welfare minister: "every day we get 200 new people to the ER in critical conditions, which means every day we need to find 200 more hospital beds. […] the virus is spreading at an exceptional speed, faster than our predictions and than the data we got from China.

Hmm, after buttermilkwaffles post, I'd like to revise my answer to safferupnorth as an unmitigated, fuck no.

Skyejuly · 06/03/2020 12:08

Anxious about the updates today +locations

AutumnRose1 · 06/03/2020 12:10

Running “ Now I’ve seen up close how densely packed and high the cabins are I cannot think of anything I’d rather not do.”

I wonder how many people book cruises not knowing this. I’ve always thought it looks horrendous.

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 06/03/2020 12:14

@Twixes yep! You may find in 3 weeks from now there's a travel ban.. good luck with that. By all means go on your holiday but think carefully about who you may be in contact with both there and on your return. Sadly I believe it's this attitude that's caused the issue!

saffer I wouldn't put more money into it, I wouldn't cancel either as there is at least a chance, if travel is stopped by then, you might have it covered by insurance? I wouldn't go though, no way.

alloutoffucks · 06/03/2020 12:14

Cruises show photos and dimensions of cabins. You get much more info about exactly what they are like than if you book a hotel room. Cheap cruises and rooms have small rooms, more expensive cruises and rooms have larger rooms.

EgonSpengler2020 · 06/03/2020 12:14

Lombardy's welfare minister: "every day we get 200 new people to the ER in critical conditions, which means every day we need to find 200 more hospital beds. […] the virus is spreading at an exceptional speed, faster than our predictions and than the data we got from China.

Does anyone have source for an exponential growth chart of cases in Europe or cases outside China. I have had a quick Google and couldn't really find one (found one from a few weeks ago but that was a bit old).

Ciwirocks · 06/03/2020 12:15

While the flights are still departing and the foreign office are not recommending avoiding travel to areas people will still go, there are 5 schools in my city who are all still planning on sending kids there in the next few weeks.

Twixes that is not my attitude and if it were me I wouldn’t go. The point I am trying to make is things will probably look a lot different here in 3 weeks. I have said all along that everyone returning from north Italy should have been advised to self isolate for 2 weeks before the kids returned to school after the half term. This advice was slow in coming and still only advises to isolate if you feel unwell and now look where we are.

This country will end up exactly like Italy if our government does not take drastic action now!

Fourducksate · 06/03/2020 12:17

I had My first ‘elbow bump’ in greeting today! 😃

AutumnRose1 · 06/03/2020 12:17

Running

It wasn’t just the measurements that stunned me

It’s the way they pack in facilities

I saw one that was docked. I don’t really travel but I looked at a brochure my parents had and I felt strongly that my late father, in particular, would hate it.

When I saw one, I realised it was even worse than I imagined.

Whenever people describe them to me, as a germophobe, I just think it sounds like travelling on the Tube all day. The number of people on board 😱😱😱

alloutoffucks · 06/03/2020 12:18

If I had a trip booked to Italy and could not get my money back, I would wait and see. Things are changing quickly. Also if in a week the official advice is not to travel, your insurance will cover it.

AutumnRose1 · 06/03/2020 12:19

Btw any other Londoners here? The traffic is astonishing for a Friday morning. It honestly made me wonder if people were escaping to the countryside or something!

alloutoffucks · 06/03/2020 12:19

@AutumnRose1 I have been on a cruise that was fine. Less crowded than many resorts. It depends what you book.

yolofish · 06/03/2020 12:20

DH and I are due to go to a ski resort in the French Alps where DD is working in two weeks time. Three day trip. DH finished chemo this morning. He has asked his cancer care nurse about travel, and was told that because he coped with the chemo very well his immune system should start improving straight away.

At the moment we are still planning to go, on the grounds that it will be as bad here as it is there by then. Personally I'm not that keen, but DH is desperate to go and DD desperate to see us (and us her). The only thing that will stop DH is if there is a travel ban.

cologne4711 · 06/03/2020 12:21

Not in London, but in the south east and the main road near me was absolutely chocker this morning. All rushing out to buy the non-existent loo roll?

RazzleDazzle26 · 06/03/2020 12:22

@AutumnRose1 opposite here in east London, roads quiet this morning, I thought everyone had stayed home

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 12:22

I had My first ‘elbow bump’ in greeting today! 😃

My friends and I bum bumped the other day. I'm rather large of arse at the moment and so still managed to keep my head a fair distance away.

DonkeyKong2019 · 06/03/2020 12:23

We have a trip already booked and paid for France in August. Not cancelled but certainly holding off paying final balance as late as possible!

Couldn't imagine why anyone would go on a cruise at the moment.

NaturalBornWoman · 06/03/2020 12:25

@PotholeParadise yes I can see the tracking information from when it left.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 06/03/2020 12:34

How did coronavirus get to the UK? Because people who had it but didn't know they had it travelled here.

What would have prevented that?

Not travelling.

Travelling spreads the disease because there will always be people who have caught it and can pass it on but don't have symptoms yet. It's basic. If people stop non-essential travel, it will slow spread.

China enforced this through lockdown.

It may be there is faster spread in Italy is because Italy didn't.

frumpety · 06/03/2020 12:35

yolofish is he taking anything to improve his immune system , injections or medication ? I think a chat with his consultant would be a good idea. I personally feel 2 weeks post chemo isn't the best time to be considering foreign travel given the current situation, but I am not an Oncologist. Are you flying or driving there ?

MaryHerbert · 06/03/2020 12:39

I just don't understand why they aren't putting in place travel restrictions to and from Italy.

How do you suppose that would work? Even if direct flights to and from Italy were stopped, people would still be able to go somewhere else in Europe and travel on to Italy from there.
