WWYD?
We are due to go skiiing in Cervinia, northern Italy, in three weeks time. Our Jet2 flight to Turin still scheduled to depart as planned, as that part of Northern Italy still OK to travel to according to FCO (advice is to self-isolate if experiencing symptoms). If we decide to ditch the holiday at this stage, the cost will fall entirely to us (lost flight, car hire, accommodation) - travel insurance won't cover. Would you still travel if you were me?

pasanda · 06/03/2020 11:30

My dc's school (secondary) is advertising the fact that there are now spaces (I wonder why!) on upcoming trips to France and Germany. If anyone feels like going....

Whereas other schools are cancelling them.

They seem to be following PHE advice to the letter and won't consider closing the school, cancelling trips unless told to do so.

Luckily my DD's are not booked on any trips!

hankyspanky · 06/03/2020 11:30

@SafferUpNorth

No. I've got family in Northern Italy and they're saying the situation there is pretty dire. Admittedly its not a ski resort but, it is a major tourist area that is like a ghost town.

Saffer. No I wouldn't

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 06/03/2020 11:33

@Inmyownlittlecorner that would be a game changer for me. Wonder how many will pull their kids out of school!

A case in Nottingham

FourTeaFallOut · 06/03/2020 11:35

Would you still travel if you were me?

No, I wouldn't but then I have a chronic illness but even if I didn't I wouldn't want to risk being locked down in one country and then have to self isolate in this one, that sounds really expensive.

hankyspanky · 06/03/2020 11:36

Trying to lighten the mood a little!

Has anyone else been getting constant emails offering 'up to 75% off' Princess Cruises?

Never been on a cruise, did briefly consider it a few years ago so a bit baffled why I'm being bombarded with offers?

No. I'll pass on your generous offer thanks!

Fourducksate · 06/03/2020 11:40

@SafferUpNorth. No. Why risk it, you will probably be anxious during the flight and whatever you touch when there. It won’t be a holiday as you know it.

Nicepud · 06/03/2020 11:44

Inmyownlittlecorner I've already discussed what our cut off point for 'nope, tap out' is with DH.

We settled on a certain amount of cases in the local area or just one case in dc's school or nursery.

Then we pull the dc out and bunker down.

Crucial in a public health crisis for the govt not to deliberately mislead the public
(human error can happen, but should correct with apologies asap)

Simon Jackk@BBCSimonJack (BBC business editor)

Supermarket exec tells me Matt Hancock has “totally made up what he said about working with supermarkets.

"We haven’t heard anything from govt directly.”

Adds - teams are having to work “round the clock” to keep shelves stocked.

Tinned goods, pasta sales “through the roof”

Supermarket said no question of shortages of food (unlike sanitising products where there are shortages)
but there was a logistical challenge physically restocking the shelves

Has anyone else received this text message?

Are you concerned you may have symptoms of coronavirus / COVID-19? Do you think you may have travelled to a risk area or been exposed to the virus? Please look at this link and complete the 111 questionnaire which will give you further advice. www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19 Please do not go to a GP Practice, Pharmacist or Hospital, and avoid close contact with people and take advice from NHS 111 online using the link above.

Yes, Redcandle I got that this morning. Assumed it was via my GP system.

Redlocks30 · 06/03/2020 11:51

My kids school has sent an email saying that a parent has tested positive for CV19, apparently they’ve not been in the school for a month but both of their children are going to be in isolation for 2 weeks

The same has happened in south Essex at my sister’s school.

CarrotVan · 06/03/2020 11:54

That link is very focused on travel and contact with known cases.

I just don't understand why they aren't putting in place travel restrictions to and from Italy. Many of our current cases are imported from Italy, and although some people are now put off travelling, we still have so many flights coming and going, that I don't see how we won't just keep importing cases from there. It's like chasing your own tail.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 11:57

Most definitely not. Also do check in advance what your employers say about this. Some are now saying that if employees now deliberately travel to those heavily affected areas when self isolation is necessary afterwards if showing symptoms and then they are forced to self isolate when they return then that will be unpaid. Others are going even further and saying they will not allow employees to return to work due to the duty of care towards other employees.

Ciwirocks · 06/03/2020 12:01

The thing is though in 3 weeks time it could be just as bad here as anywhere else so won’t make a difference if you go or not!

RazzleDazzle26 · 06/03/2020 12:02

Similar email for school in Southend, Essex

@SafferUpNorth hell no

nickEcave · 06/03/2020 12:02

I have eczema and always use emollient cream wash at home rather than soap. Wondering if I should switch to soap if it is more effective? If I do my hands will be cracked up within days even if I use additional moisturiser.

Re Italy:

Lombardy's welfare minister: "every day we get 200 new people to the ER in critical conditions, which means every day we need to find 200 more hospital beds. […] the virus is spreading at an exceptional speed, faster than our predictions and than the data we got from China."
