@Fifflefaffle not allowed wipes because of allergies? That's crazy. We (and the rest of the NHS, care homes, etc) wipe down everything (well, a lot of things) that comes into contact with a patient, with wipes like Clinell or other antibac ones. Never heard of anyone being allergic to them.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 20:41

Middleager Yep, I live in Germany
So far, schools here have not been closed - except where a pupil or staff member has tested positive - but other measures have been taken

e.g. many people who might contract the virus have been quarantined - 1,000 in one area alone -
and trade fairs have been cancelled

Handshakes are being discouraged
I feel deprived that Frau Merkel hasn't talked about Happy Birthday, but handwashing is one of the recommendations from the health dept - just not the only one.

BloomedAgain · 05/03/2020 20:41

@Gammeldragz it seems to be a catch22 of astronomic proportions. A friend's two adult sons have all the symptoms after being at the same crowded event but 111 don't want to screen them as no known contact with a positive case or travel. So no community transmission being tested for. And GP can't test them (and they don't want to go in and infect the practice).

Gammeldragz · 05/03/2020 20:42

@RedToothBrush thank you. I had wondered if it was something like that but don't know enough about other countries' set ups regarding that to make an educated assumption.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 20:42

Preppers would feel quite at home in Germany 😀

The BKK (Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance) recommended

  • years before the Coronavirus - that Germans stockpile 10 days worth of groceries, in case of disaster

That advice goes back to cold war days, but has always continued because emergencies, national or local, can always happen:
climate change events, floods, major chemical leaks etc

This didn't stop the loo roll shelves being near empty at a couple of supermarkets near me though
There seems an insatiable appetite for the stuff

Fifflefaffle · 05/03/2020 20:43

@LambriniSocialist I agree (about the handwashing). But I feel we have to keep on with it because it feels irresponsible not to. We went on a school trip the other day and spent a lot of it hand washing, and that felt somewhat pointless.

Devlesko · 05/03/2020 20:43

I think those of us who are in a position to stay at home more, hibernate for a while could help to slow the spread down.
We don't all have to go places at peak times, we could compromise quite a bit in some cases.
Fewer people, fewer places open, fewer people travelling.
I know many can't do much to change their lifestyle ito work/family, but those who can will help to slow it down.
At least it will give the NHS time to prepare and the winter strain over.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 20:43

Lambrini I think hand-washing is very helpful actually.

But some schools are very wishy washy and not consistent.

Fifflefaffle · 05/03/2020 20:45

@Gammeldragz yes I know. We can only ha w the cleaners that the cleaning staff use. I'd happily anti-bac everything in my room!

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 20:46

I think if there is no action to order schools to close and large gatherings to stop then it will happen anyway because of illness, caring responsibilities and fear.

Whether it's a decision or not, it will just increasingly happen that people will not be able to carry on as normal.

I think numbers will rise a lot in the next few days and over the weekend the government will make a reluctant announcement to pull the plug on 'normal'.

ScatteredMama82 · 05/03/2020 20:46

Just had an infuriating conversation with my MIL. ‘Why all the fuss, we don’t get daily updates about the number of people with flu’. I highlighted the ‘novel’ aspect, as well as the lack of any vaccine or effective anti-virals, the resulting risk to vulnerable population and impact on the health service.

She’s just back from a holiday, flew home via Singapore and in 3 weeks is going on a cruise but there’s ‘no flying involved so no risk there’. SMH.

EnidBlyton · 05/03/2020 20:47

Just wondering if I will be allowed to donate blood in a coupe of weeks?
any other donaters here?

middleager · 05/03/2020 20:48

Thanks BigChoc
I'm interested to see how other countries are trying to manage this, so interesting to see Germany hasn't closed schools but is taking other measures.

What measures are being taken in the UK? Handwashing, cancelling some events, Parliament potentially closing?

nellodee · 05/03/2020 20:48

In the 2nd world war, we had Bletchley Park set up to crack the Enigma Code. I am seriously hoping someone somewhere has assembled a crack team of mathematicians to work on this, to calculate the costs and benefits of closing schools, etc. This is a mathematical and medical modelling problem. I can almost see the differential equations re: rates of infection in teachers and loss of nursing hours, cost to the economy from lockdowns vs cost to the economy through sickness and death. I just so sincerely hope that we are not just analysing the past, but also having some big brains projecting the future and basing our choices on some real calculations, not just hunches and politics.

woodencoffeetable · 05/03/2020 20:48

my niece sings 'hänschen klein...' at nursery.

i googled it for anyone else interested

BigChocFrenzy

Like Switzerland where they built their homes with nuclear bunkers and then have a small supermarket in it. I was a nanny once and thought we'd run out of food for the children in the kitchen cupboards-until they showed me The Bunker.

Grandmi · 05/03/2020 20:49

I am definitely not dismissing the Corona Virus but am still not sure as to why it is such a threat ...have tried googling the reason as to why it is such a problem in comparison with flu virus.Am not stupid and am a health professional but am still finding it hard to explain to my children.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 20:49

Fiffle I'm not sure I understand the logic there of hand-wash being pointless.. My 8 year old dd when they on a school trip the other day and food was involved. I was paying staff would be show due dilegence and watch dc hand-washing and promote it.

Having witnessed my dc with a play date the other day I'd say its more important than ever.

Fuck what they are learning id be enforcing it every hour or so!.

fedup21 · 05/03/2020 20:49

111 don't want to screen them as no known contact with a positive case or travel. So no community transmission being tested for

That’s dreadful! It will massively affect the reported numbers and potentially make it look like things are much better here than they really are.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 20:51

What do pp think about the suggestion on some threads to allow parents to keep their DC home if they choose, without fines / EWOs ?

It would help reduce the spread, but I don't know whether this would still mean too much disruption,
as it wouldn't only be families with an SAHP who would choose this - some NHS staff, teachers, transport workers etc might decide to stay home too

middleager · 05/03/2020 20:51

Scattered same with my aunt (77) who has had cancer twice, ongoing health issues. Her partner had been in Hong Kong.

She looked at me as if I were insane yesterday when I asked her how she was and if she wanted any bits getting in.

nellodee · 05/03/2020 20:52

Grandmi, we are currently seeing doubling every 2 days. No-one is immune. Now, I am NOT saying that this doubling will continue until the end of the month, but let's just imagine it did....

5/3/20 115
7/3/20 230
9/3/20 460
11/3/20 920
13/3/20 1840
15/3/20 3680
17/3/20 7360
19/3/20 14720 (possibly all infected already)
21/3/20 29440
23/3/20 58880
25/3/20 117,760
27/3/20 235,520
29/3/20 471,040
31/3/20 942,080

It's a novel virus. No-one has immunity.

Furfockssake · 05/03/2020 20:53

Am I alone in having every other single family member think I’m alarmist because I’m telling them to prepare now and to keep my DM safe at the peak time? My DS said she’s not changing anything she does and I shouldn’t send her stats. What can I do?

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 20:53

Nellodee I think they will have that sort of thing going on, but who are these people?

All this ridiculous obsession with Boris, who the fuck is this chief medical officer, who does he meet with?

These are the people we need to know about.

Don't forget some poll came out saying brits are totes relaxed about corona.

Where do we lobby to say... Actually no we're not?
