am I right in thinking children aren't as badly effected?

@Mittens030869.. that sounds terrifying. DH has had pleurisy and i'm trying to tell him not to panic. It's the not being able to breathe that worries me. Apparently you're supposed to gargle with warm water for the throat. How are you feeling now? Where do you think you picked it up from? Hope you feel better asap

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 15/03/2020 05:48

I am very sure DH and I have got it; we both tick the symptoms boxes and both of us in the last week have been in the perfect conditions to catch it - flying, the Underground, around people who have what seem to be colds but may also have it.

We just feel “a bit shit”. We both have asthma so that’s bothering my brain a little but we have three under 5 to now self isolate with so not getting sectioned is the greater concern.

My upper back is sore and I thought it was because of the gym but I know now that accompanied with a headache and flashing hot when I exert myself even a small bit (dismantling an IKEA baby chair for example) plus having a dry cough means it’s more likely than not it’s COVID-19.

Just feels like a draining, achey shit cold where symptoms are abated with regular use of Lemsip.

Gohackyourself · 15/03/2020 06:49

My parents had it.
My df who is 70, gets asthma is ok now.
He was wiped out with fatigue and not being able to sleep from coughing.
He had to use his inhalers. He also had diarrhoea for 2-3 days but immodium helped. But in all it lasted a week and half of feeling like flu and he’s back on mend now getting out and about .This was 4 weeks ago when we were probably at 5 ppl with it, he called doctor twice who only prescribed more inhalers and antihistamine for nose and throat, they were adamant that it wasn’t corona as he had diarrhoea. But they were wrong, as in some accounts from people that have had it diarrhoea can be a symptom.
They isolated themselves completely, in fact it’s been 4 weeks since they got back and I’ve only seen my df through window when I dropped supplies off!
Definitely flu like and it’s the coughing that will drive you mad, so a good cough linctus, steaming and antihistamine will help .

BooseysMum, Thank you for your kind words, yes it was really scary. I'm still having to cough and puke constantly to get rid of the mucus, but I'm managing for the moment now I've stopped trying to do anything else. I don't know where I got it from, which is why they wouldn't test me. My DH goes into the city centre and our girls go to school so I probably won't ever know.

Their school has a very shortsighted approach to this. My DDs will be expected to go to school unless they have symptoms (I think DD2 has already had it, she was unwell and off school for 3 days). Otherwise it's an unauthorised absence.)

SoloMummy · 15/03/2020 10:49

Schools should be recording absences using the Y code, so it's recorded separately.

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 10:49

Just spoke to online to a freind of a freind who has it - only heavy cold symptoms but their young.

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 11:09

@Angryrant55 It's not just about age. I'm only 50 (not exactly a spring chicken, I know). I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and I had pneumonia last year following a bad bout of flu.

I really don't want to hear anyone saying it's the same as flu. It isn't, take it from me. My flu led to pneumonia last year, but I was never choking on my own mucus, it's horrific.

I may not be young and I may be unable to have a job, but I'm an adoptive mum and my DDs of 10 and 7 have attachment issues.

This disease is relentless but I feel as if I'm angry enough to beat this.

ThreeBlindNice · 15/03/2020 11:12

@Gohackyourself how did your df get tested

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 11:19

It was flu like for me before, but this stage is nothing like it. FlMy lungs and throat continually fill up with mucus and I have to keep coughing. But the mucus only comes out if I pike it out. They wouldn't take me into hospital partly because there are people more sick than me but also because of the risk I would catch something else.

This also shines a light on the way people with MH issues are treated. I asked for help after a week, when it was simply a fever, but because I didn't fit their narrow criteria at the time, they wouldn't test me and a paramedic thought it was a panic attack.

Sofrano · 15/03/2020 11:20

coronaworry are you sure a school pupil in NW London has it? There has been one primary schools and one secondary school where parents have got it. Being the sort of schools they are it’s highly likely the parents don’t live locally. The parents haven’t been near the school, and their children are isolating.
I’m not saying their aren’t cases in schools, but I don’t know of any that are certain.

sigmu87 · 15/03/2020 11:25

One of my clients friends has it and is in intensive care on a ventilator and not expected to make it. She is 40 and does have underlying health issues but even so it was quite shocking to hear how quickly she went from being at home to being on a life support machine.

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 11:38

@sigmu87 I'm so sorry about your friend. I'm afraid that that's going to be my fate. I can't go on coughing and piling up mucus indefinitely. It's relentless, I can't get any respite. I will end up on a ventilator I think, but will it be too late?

I'm continuing to fight, but I'm exhausted now.

BooseysMom · 15/03/2020 18:31

@Mittens030869.. omg that sounds absolutely horrendous..worse than when DH had pneumonia. They must take you seriously. Is there anything helping with the symptoms?? Anything at all? I really hope you get through this Flowers

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 18:57

@sigmu87
Are you in the UK or Italy.

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 19:41

@BooseysMom We had an ambulance come again today. It turns out that my chest is clear. My throat was simply inflamed by all the coughing and hence why I wasn't able to breathe. That and all the mucus. It very likely is coronavirus but they're not testing.

But I'm now throwing up everything I swallow. The paramedics reckon that it's because I swallowed quite a bit of mucus when I wasn't able to get any of it up.

So hopefully I'll be okay. I'm shattered though. Sad

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 19:42

Thank you for your concern, though. The issue is that there are so many sick people right now.

BooseysMom · 15/03/2020 20:29

@Mittens030869.. Oh that's a relief.Smile i'm glad you're on the mend..i honestly was scared then! The last time i felt that ill was when we had swine flu..the fevers were beyond ridiculous with hallucinations, the works!
Get some rest now and get well soon x

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 21:00

Thank you for your support. I haven't felt as bad as I have the last couple of days since I had malaria in West Africa 20 years ago. I had such a bad headache that I was afraid that I had the more lethal 'cerebral malaria', which is lethal and took the life of a dear friend of mine. It was never going to be the case, though, as the prophylactics protect against that.

I think this experience shows that a lot of 'mild' cases of COVID-19 are only called that because they don't require hospital treatment. They're actually still bad; I was so full of mucus that I couldn't breathe and was too tired to cough for a period. I can imagine that for more elderly people, they wouldn't have the strength to fight through that.

Fivefourthree · 16/03/2020 20:47

How are you today mittens? I've been thinking about you, really hoping you feel better Flowers

Fivefourthree · 16/03/2020 20:48

And sigmu how is your friend? Flowers

Mittens030869 · 16/03/2020 21:07

@Fivefourthree Thank you for your concern. I still have a bad cough, and sputum, and a temperature that spikes, but I'm on the mend thankfully. But now we're in quarantine, so my DH and DDs will be at home with me for 2 weeks and I'll have to keep my distance so they don't catch it from me. My DH has asthma so he's potentially vulnerable too.

There will be thousands of people in the same boat ultimately.

Fivefourthree · 16/03/2020 21:11

So relieved for you! Best wishes for your recovery 🙏😊

TheYearOfTheDog · 16/03/2020 21:26

@PaulHollywoodsSexGut are you there? are you feeling better or worse.? Because you have asthma I am wondering if it's hitting you like a train or if having asthma doesn't necessarily mean it ''hits you like a train'' (like conor reed the english teacher in wuhan on youtube).

Tom Hanks and Rita wilson have been released from hospital. I wonder if they'll talk about how it felt.

TheYearOfTheDog · 16/03/2020 21:28

@Mittens030869 hope you're feeling better soon. It sounds horrible.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 16/03/2020 22:55

I’m completely fine @TheYearOfTheDog

Just a little bit more tired and was a bit tickly coughed this morning.

I truly think we have got off lightly. Self isolating is doing my head in though.
