am I right in thinking children aren't as badly effected?

I am not signing any petition.
The absolute last thing we need right now (or in any crisis situation) is policy driven by the whims of public opinion.

Not that I have huge faith in this government, but I hope they are listening to expert opinion and that pre-prepared contingencies and emergency protocols are being followed.

There may come a time to close the schools, but this should be done at the right time and not because of a petition.

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 12:47

That will be too late, it needs to be now, but hey fuck all those who aren't fit and well, or old, they are just collateral damage in this capitalist society.

Quartz2208 · 07/03/2020 12:50

@viccat I completely agree I had swine flu and all of the accounts I read sound a lot like that. I was out of action for 2 weeks, it took another 2 weeks to feel even like I could do a full day and another 4 weeks to feel fully functional

I think there is a divide between the medical profession concept of mild and ours. DD had a mild concussion last week. It was mild because it was self limiting and needed no medical intervention. But it took her out for 48 hours and she is still feeling the affects. She did not think of it as mild - but it was

SquishySquirmy · 07/03/2020 12:59

Devlesko, economic catastrophe kills too.

Who looks after all the kids if the schools shut for a long time?

What about the parents of those school kids who are nurses, doctors, HCAs, shop workers, care workers, cleaners, delivery drivers, pharmacists? Who work for the police (in both frontline and support roles?)
All those obvious (and non obvious) roles we rely on to keep the lights on, the hospital's open, the banks functioning, and the shops stocked?

How long should those people be removed from their jobs for?

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 13:23

there parents should look after them where possible. Quite a lot have 2 parents, some have grand parents, but they won't be able to use them for childcare now, as older folk will be distancing from next week.

All those parents you are talking about it will get it anyway, they'll have to cope, what a silly question.
They might not have done if we'd have closed down.
This government want to close the door after the horse has bolted, never a good or effective strategy.
There is no way we will void 80% contracting the virus now, and all for capitalism. No wonder we are the joke country.

Porcupineinwaiting · 07/03/2020 13:28

There is very little point in shutting schools if children then start going swimming, to soft play, bowling, to museums a la school holidays. All you do then is damage the economy by taking large amounts of people out of work. And if you want people to keep their children out of school and keep them home then you cant do that for months at a time, so the timing has got to be right.

SquishySquirmy · 07/03/2020 14:49

Well, yes, their parents will look after them. My whole point is that this will remove an awful lot of people from the workforce!

The impact of this is not to be underestimated.
You imy closing the schools now (for how long?) Will prevent 80% becoming infected??
Is this based on evidence?
Or a hunch?

This is a crisis.

I was in an emergency situation on a plane once.
It was frightening.
Do you know what the pilots didn't do?
Ask the terrified passengers for their opinion on the best way to deal with it. Maybe they should have... Maybe the noisiest ones should have been allowed a shot at flying the plane!

This government is a joke.
My only hope is that they are listening to experts and sensibly adapting carefully drawn up plans to the changing situation, based on evidence, and assessing all potential plans of action for unintended consequences.

Not making things up as they go along to please public opinion.

PicsInRed · 07/03/2020 22:21

If they close the schools, morons will take their kids on discount holidays and bring back even more coronavirus.

If anything, the authorities should declare the school hols cancelled until the end of the year, to prevent total eejits from taking little Lorax and Persphone on a discount japes to Italy. We all know that will happen and we all know that coronavirus will absolutely explode after the Easter school hols and again during the summer hols. Hmm

Don't close the schools. UNclose the schools.

BooseysMom · 10/03/2020 19:17

We just have to hope the hot weather kills it off. Apparently it's the heat that kills bugs not the cold!

Orangeblossom78 · 10/03/2020 19:20

This might help-

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51822618

Earlier, England's deputy chief medical officer defended the decision to delay closing schools and introducing other stringent measures, saying experts were assessing new cases on an hourly basis to achieve a "balanced response".
Earlier Dr Jenny Harries said she expected significant increases in the number of cases in the UK beginning in about 10 to 41 days time, at which point people with flu-like symptoms would be advised to self-isolate.

The vast majority of those diagnosed with coronavirus in Britain were "pretty well" but might "feel a bit rough for a few days"

lljkk · 10/03/2020 19:36

That guy who was first case in Britain, the skier, there are accounts of how ill he was (not bad at all).

Chocolatedaim · 10/03/2020 19:42

I do worry about my husband and I getting it because we live far away from family, so if we needed help with childcare we would be screwed. Plus both my in-laws have recently finished chemo therapy so I wouldn’t want them close to it, anyway.
I heard that out of the 100,000plus people worldwide that had confirmed to have had it, 46,000 are well and back to normal. Hopefully it’s something that we are finally getting on top of

cloud1183 · 10/03/2020 20:00

The owner of Nottingham Forest has it and posted on his instagram that he feels fine

BooseysMom · 11/03/2020 06:50

@cloud1183.. Grin

Catonahat · 11/03/2020 07:00

I know of someone who passed away from it back in my home country. He was in his 40s

ElderAve · 11/03/2020 07:02

What's with he obsession about closing schools?

AFAIK there hasn't been a case in a school child yet? If school are to be closed it needs to be for a short period with other restrictions in place too. As others have said, no point if people then use it as an opportunity to travel. People won't stand for weeks of severe restrictions so it needs to be timed very carefully. We're not there yet.

Bluebelle32 · 11/03/2020 07:07

Surely the kids in China haven’t all been running around soft play together since being off school? What are they doing over there?

ElderAve · 11/03/2020 07:13

No in China on person her household has been allowed out to get food every three days. That's it. But the Chinese are terrified of the authorities and appropriate threats were made to contain thing. Do you really think the British would put up with that for long? There'd be rioting

Mittens030869 · 11/03/2020 07:20

We don't know of any, but children get it very mildly and it would easily pass as a cold if no one realised that there was a chance that they might have it.

You have a point about some parents using the opportunity to book a cheap holiday, though.

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/03/2020 07:21

A local teacher has it. She had been in Italy at half term, not one of the red zones so no advice to self isolate, so she's been at school for 2 weeks before testing positive. The kids she's been teaching say she had a bit of a cough but no more than most of them given it's cold season. She's been in contact with her colleagues and says she feels like a really bad cold at the minute.

crazydiamond222 · 11/03/2020 07:24

Here is a positive story about someone in their late 60s on the cruise ship who caught the virus
www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/02/28/i-have-coronavirus-so-far-it-isnt-that-bad/

SpaghettiSharon · 11/03/2020 07:26

I know someone who has it - mid 40s, relatively fit. Doesn’t feel that unwell at all - not even as bad as flu.

Personally I don’t see the point in worrying about how we’ll cope if we catch it because everyone is different and none of us know.

For those who are elderly there is much more to worry about - they become much sicker AFAIK.

ElderAve · 11/03/2020 07:29

For most people I expect the stress of who you might give it to and how you'll deal with the self isolation is worse than the illness itself.

Gatekeeper · 11/03/2020 07:29

@MsAwesomeDragon

is this in Darlo? Carmel School?

SpaghettiSharon · 11/03/2020 07:43

@Bluebelle32 no but they have in Italy - parents have been meeting in local halls with large groups of kids, largely defeating the purpose of self isolation Hmm
