am I right in thinking children aren't as badly effected?

The Abels are in hospital in Japan and are all over YouTube including showing the nurses when they come in. They live stream. I fell asleep watching them last night.

PollyannaWhittier · 05/03/2020 19:48

This lad who has got it says he's absolutely fine (local paper, so maybe less sensationalist than the sun or the fail !)

My DD told me today that a student in her group at Uni is being tested for a viral infection, no mention of it being Covid 19 but they have given her additional time to complete her degree and she is expected to be off for at least 3 weeks, My DD isn't worried for herself as said she hasn't had contact with her for 3 weeks but is concerned about the student. This is an area with 17 reported cases so it is a possibility but it could be something else, like glandular fever, being tested for a virus could mean anything I suppose

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 05/03/2020 19:59

... “The duration from the beginning of the disease until recovery is 3 to 6 weeks on average for these severe and critical patients (compared to only 2 weeks for the mildly ill).”

I’d say this is why nobody’s yet writing about it. Also we perhaps need to reassess how we interpret the word “mildly”.

CuriousCapricorn · 05/03/2020 20:01

It’s just been on the news that the first person has died from CV in the UK.

MrsGrindah · 05/03/2020 20:05

My MIL has it and is telling everyone. Yes she’s out and about as normal.

(FFS MIL YOU HAVE A COLD! )

Ouchaheadinmybehind · 05/03/2020 20:14

Jonathan Maitland was just on a programme about corona virus. A man who had been infected did describe how he felt.
He said he felt like he was going to die. Tremors, pain, fever etc. Sounds grim & I have a DH who is immunosuppressed so it is worrying.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/03/2020 20:20

It skews older and my parents in their 70s don't tweet daily symptoms of anything.

The likelihood is that younger people have it milder and don't get tested.

BooseysMom · 05/03/2020 20:42

I've been told by medical professionals that it's mostly hype. But since we got a letter from our school stating breathing difficulties is one of the symptoms, i'm concerned for DH who was hospitalised with pleurisy

SquishySquirmy · 05/03/2020 20:57

Booseysmom don't know if this reassures you at all, but as I understand it pleurisy is a (painful), short term symptom of something else (Eg lung infection/pneumonia) rather than a condition in itself.

I had pleurisy (caused by pneumonia) last year, it was treated in hospital, and I consider myself to now be in the low risk category for CV (I appreciate that I'm lucky to be fit and healthy).
Having pleurisy previously does not in itself mean that someone is inherently vulnerable I don't think.

BooseysMom · 06/03/2020 07:02

@SquishySquirmy.. thanks for your reassurance Smile. It really scared me as he went to A&E in an ambulance as the gp had no idea what was wrong with him! He was left in excruciating pain in the surgery and eventually they got the ambulance out. The gp was useless! The paramedics were great however. Anyway he has had reoccurences of breathing issues and chest pain since this which is what worries me. Every time he gets a cough or chest infection i stress out. Someone said that if you have pleurisy your lungs are permanently scarred and weakened. He doesn't suffer with asthma however.

middleager · 06/03/2020 07:31

It was hard to relate to a young, fit healthy single male.

Many of us, when ill ourselves, still have to care for others and I can't relate to somebody who wouldn't take the antibiotics either.

Sarcelle · 06/03/2020 08:24

The young bloke who was in the Mail lived in Wuhan. He caught it in December, at that time most people were not aware of coronavirus. So, he did not realise what it was at first. He also used to go to the market where it was suggested that live bats etc were responsible for the leap to humans. He said he had never seen stuff like that sold there, it was a regular food market with fish and veg. They also kept mentioning a kitten that visited him, but who also got poorly and died during the duration of his illness. Not sure if that was a hint that animals were compromised too. There was a dog in Hong Kong that died which was attributed to the virus but has since been discounted.

People will all be different with the effects of this. When me and my DH get a cold, I always get it worse, it seems to give me bad coughs which last for ages. He shrugs it off in a couple of days. It will be the same with this virus, our systems will deal with it differently. Lots of unknowns particularly as it has mutated to 2 different strains.

I am hoping that as it starts to get warmer that it dies away.

Devlesko · 06/03/2020 11:10

He said he had never seen stuff like that sold there, it was a regular food market with fish and veg

That's probably truer than trying to con us all into thinking it wasn't accidentally/ purposefully man made in the nearby lab, and leaked, what a coincidence, it was so close.

We are moving into a state of the survival of the fittest, I see more of these viruses emerging over the next few years, I hope I'm wrong.

Stripeyshirts2450 · 06/03/2020 11:15

One person. Luckily not been near him for ages.

Hasn't had a sick day in 10 years and he was literally unreachable for 2 weeks he was so ill.

Helenluvsrob · 06/03/2020 11:20

Possibly we are going to realise how ill viruses can make you... and still be “ mild “. Maybe we will realise the difference between a cold and flu then 😂

I’m sure it’s already circulating but we aren’t swabbing unless travel / contacts tick the boxes so we can’t say how the average symptoms are in severity.

What seems clear is under 9s don’t die and no cases reported that I’ve heard of ( which , to my cyclical mind means primary and nursery kids are the ideal super spreaders. Not I’ll with it really and a cough / vague fever is just normal )

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-us-canada-51761713/i-received-death-threats-for-having-coronavirus

Here's an interesting one from the BBC website. An American that caught it on the cruise ship. You can see why you might not go public on social media - particularly when you've seemingly recovered but are still testing positive.

Porcupineinwaiting · 06/03/2020 12:21

One person who is "suspected " (was stabbed two days ago but no result yet). She feels pretty rough (she says like flu but with a terrible cough) but is ok at home.

Porcupineinwaiting · 06/03/2020 12:21

Swabbed! She was swabbed 2 days ago. No stabbing as yet.

HerstoryInTheMaking · 06/03/2020 12:28

What is most concerning to me is the fact that the recovery numbers are relatively low. For example ib Italy of the 3800 cases, 400 have been put as fully recovered. Seems like this takes a long time to recover from.

Oddgirlout · 06/03/2020 12:28

If I had it I wouldn't post on SM. Everything is so easily misinterpreted and misunderstood. I'd be terrified of being blamed for spreading it, stalked by media etc. The gutter press are ruthless and can upend entire lives with little warning. It'd be really hard to write carefully and helpfully at this stage in the outbreak, notwithstanding how ill you may feel.

Porcupineinwaiting · 06/03/2020 12:35

They are saying 2-4 weeks for recovery, so yes , quite a while.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 06/03/2020 15:25

That guy in the DM is a billy bullshitter he was in the Sun and few other papers weeks ago, I bet it was at the end of Jan even and he was saying how he was only mildly ill and cured himself with whiskey and honey - it’s the same guy. DM have obviously paid him to do a sensationalist story!!! It’s their MO isn’t it.

Yes I thought the chalet family (5 odd and there were a few associates weren’t there) have said they were only mildly ill. I’m guessing they didn’t want to attract anymore attention. Likewise for others I think they’re probably feeling a bit of stigma.

viccat · 06/03/2020 16:07

Most of the descriptions I've seen so far sound a lot like what swine flu was like. I had swine flu during that epidemic and it took a long time to recover from as well - the exhaustion especially went on for weeks (I remember it well as I was writing my MA dissertation at the time and struggling).
