Most cases? How many? I know some people who have had pneumonia as almost all had to go into hospital. Flu also can mean hospital for some otherwise fit people. I don’t feel reassured at all Sad

pedanticstyleguide · 03/03/2020 11:54

Having mentioned the London Book Fair (next week) I see the Leipzig book fair has been cancelled.

Also saw that ds' old school had organised a trip to Venice, this month for their GCSE art students. Can't see that going ahead.

SouthwarkRoad · 03/03/2020 11:54

My BIL is a senior A&E doctor and was just like meh, it'll all be fine.

Can't work out if he's being ridiculous or if I am.

Random18 · 03/03/2020 11:54

I don't get what they can actually do.

China can go fuck off if they are pissed off with the UKs response. This virus started in China and could have been prevented.

There is no vaccine and it will take time to get one.

Surely if it's going to spread then trying to delay is sensible. No health service can really cope with a virus spreading at this rate in the depths of winter, even one that hasn't been chronically underfunded.

I am happier with the just get on with things approach than shutting everything down.

I say that as someone who doesn't have the concerns re underlying health conditions as many on here, so I do realise I am coming from a completely different place.

I just don't know what they can do apart from let and run and try and manage it as best as possible so that as many of us survive as possible.

Millions losing their jobs because of a complete shit down would cause significant health issues too.

Once again I wish there was a ‘like’ button for posts - insight, wit, humour and fab observations.

I luv you all❤️

pedanticstyleguide · 03/03/2020 11:56

We've all stopped shaking hands at work, we bow or fist bump according to personal preference. It's vital to clarify which we're doing in advance as a combination of the two has led to some minor injuries

Ha ha. I was in the office yesterday and when I walked in a new colleague went to shake my hand. I said I wouldn't as I'd just got off a dirty train and I'd go and wash my hands first. She was fine about it, it's just such an automatic thing isn't it?

Dusty01 · 03/03/2020 11:57

The Elements -

I wouldn't necessarily follow their advice though. That's why I said on a different thread that we should all do what we think is best.

I don't trust this government at all and know they don't care about us little people. So I'll be doing what I think is best. Personally, I wouldn't send my son on a trip to France, but that's just me. Not because he'd be more likely to get CV over there than here but just because I'd want to be able to look after him if/when he got sick with it.

ThankyouPeter · 03/03/2020 11:59

Have we not had any new cases since yesterday or are they announced at a specific time of day?

Random18 · 03/03/2020 11:59

New cases announced at 2pm

Spacecadetagain · 03/03/2020 12:00

I believe Antarctica is nice this time of year 🙄 . I don’t feel reassured one bit by the outcome of BJ s mumbling bullshit today .
There seem to be two camps where I am . Terrified and couldn’t give a damn . If I hear “oh it’s just like flu “ one more time I’ll scream . I had flu last year and was in bed for two weeks and barely had the energy to go to the loo. It took me weeks to get over it . Even flu is (if you’ll excuse the pun ) not to be sneezed at and it’s not bloody flu anyway

ThankyouPeter · 03/03/2020 12:00

Ah thank you Smile

Horehound · 03/03/2020 12:04

Well I'm not sure about the 2pm thingy cause it looks like UK have updated with one more case Confused

screamer1 · 03/03/2020 12:05

@SouthwarkRoad I've mentioned on here already. My dad is a senior consultant and is not worried at all. Thinks it's a hype and just thinks people who are at risk need to take extra care.

Random18 · 03/03/2020 12:06

2pm is PHE I believe.

Nicepud · 03/03/2020 12:07

I'm not really reassured.

They were going on about the 1% death rate but what about the percentage if people who will get critically ill?

How many critically ill patients can the NHS cope with at peak?

How many of those critically ill patients will die, who would have otherwise survived, if they can't access medical treatment due to staff/bed/ equipment shortage?

NotJustACigar · 03/03/2020 12:10

As the old saying goes, denial is not just a river in Egypt! A lot of people just can't face this yet and are saying "it's no big deal" more out of fear than ignorance. Then again a lot more people really are ignorant....

As far as what could they do:

  • ask companies to encourage people to work from home where possible
  • allow parents to keep their children home from school without penalities if they wish, and roll out a provision for distance learning (this should not be beyond the whit of man)
  • discourage people from shaking hands (surely the risk outweighs any benefit???)
  • provide hand gel dispensers and wipes at train stations and encourage people to use them
  • encourage people who are ill to stay home from work and provide financial help for them to do so if needed
  • cancel
YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 03/03/2020 12:10

Restrictions may have to last for three months but officials do not plan on imposing the most drastic measures for some time, fearing they would be pointlessly disruptive and reduce public tolerance for restrictions by the time they became necessary.
A second wave of infection next winter is also a possibility, with the infection becoming like seasonal flu, the plan warns.

Looks like we could be stuck with this for the foreseeable. Until a vaccine of course.

Oops pressed post too soon...
-cancel large gatherings including crufts and the London marathon

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 03/03/2020 12:13

Rang my drs for something unrelated yesterday afternoon, and their automated message states that if you have 'flu symptoms and have returned from China to call 111. No other areas, just China. Hmm

Personally, I don't know why regular people (ie not immunocompromised, elderly or struggling to breathe) would call a drs with regular 'flu anyway? Unless it's very serious, they won't do anything, anyway. Or is that my hcp-phobia talking?

BiBiBirdie · 03/03/2020 12:15

@Random18 yes I'm the same on China, they knew about this apparently as early as October so could have quite easily prevented all of it if they had of reported first thing to WHO and contained. Frankly, sanctions should be imposed against them if that turns out to indeed be true as that would make them 100% negligent.

MaxNormal · 03/03/2020 12:15

This feels very much like the Phony War at present.

Spacecadetagain · 03/03/2020 12:16

Just received this from my surgery .

This is Xxxxxx Medical Centre re Coronavirus. Pse consider the following before you attend your scheduled appt @ the Centre: have you been abroad in last 14 days, been in contact with a known/suspected case, have a cough/cold/fever symptoms? If yes, pse call to cancel your appt. Thank you.

BiBiBirdie · 03/03/2020 12:20

@NotJustACigar I'm lucky, our school has already instigated distance learning via a platform they use for homework called doddle Learn (they are attempting to be carbon neutral where possible so don't send the kids home with bits of paper for homework and written work can be emailed to the teacher).
We are also lucky in that she has told the LEA and EWO to affectively but politely in head teacher speak to fuck off in fining those who do keep the kids home. In fact, she said yesterday she would rather shut the school too but would worry that child care would be a nightmare. She did however make a staff member go into isolation as her child is at the school at the centre of our first case here.
I think most secondaries are online now but heard this morning that schools say they cannot go online for work en masse.

ShanghaiDiva · 03/03/2020 12:28

Given the huge economic consequences this virus has had and continues to have for China, I am sure they are also regretting the lack of action/cover up from last year.
However, it is prudent to learn from what they have done and continue to do to control the spread. When I go back to China I will need to be quarantined at home for 14 days and for those coming from Italy, Iran or South Korea they cannot be quarantined at home. These measures are in place for people with no fever and no symptoms.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 03/03/2020 12:30

I was thinking is some of the complacency due to a fairly large number of people to understanding percentages?

Many people struggle with maths and 99% and indeed 101% are often used in speech as a way of expressing near certainty.

The idea that 1 or 2% adds up to loads in the population has not been emphasised.

Also on a similar note the press conference and a lot of media uses scientific and other complex ideas about epidemiology which people with average or below average education or learning difficulties will find difficult and switch off. The messages that get through easily are 'a bit like flu' and most people will be ok.

Not being an intellectual snob here, I just think they need to translate it into things people can understand. It is a complex situation but needs to be communicated more simply.
