Would you self isolate?

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:40

The advice is to self isolate if you have travelled from certain areas abroad, even if you have no symptoms. We know in other countries that not everyone has followed this advice.
So be honest, if you had no symptoms but were told to self isolate for 2 weeks in the house, would you? This would mean not leaving the house at all and staying in a separate room from anyone else living in your house.

YABU - No I would not
YANBU - Yes I would

People who may need to self isolate didn't know that they were going into a diseased zone!

I rather think the point is those that have travelled to/from an area where they're now required to self-isolate are unlikely to be living a hand to mouth existence whereby two weeks off work sick means they're homeless by day 15.

People who may need to self isolate didn't know that they were going into a diseased zone! So is that an eventuality they should've prepared for.

People going into a diseased zone at the moment could afford to travel so should be up to afford self isolate.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 10:55

OK. So nobody at all has to worry. Because they won't ever have to SI.

End of.

Are your levels of comprehension generally low?

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 11:04

No. I'm saying. That's why I'm discussing people in poverty.

Because it's all well and good talking about people who've jetted off on holiday and have some money in their pocket but there are now cases in the UK.

And there is now the possibility that UK citizens who never went on holiday and who can not afford to self isolate may now become a problem.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 11:04

The virus has been in china for a bit, but if I had went to Italy recently I would have been shocked at how quickly it has spread to there and how many people are coming back infected. Italy is a long way from China.

halcyondays · 02/03/2020 11:06

Haven’t some people been asked to self isolate because they were a “close contact” of somebody diagnosed in the UK? So not all people who could afford to travel.

I would self isolate if asked to do so.

MarieQueenofScots · 02/03/2020 11:07

Yes. 36. Of which 32 had been abroad. 3 of the remaining cases are linked to the 1 person who as yet cannot confirm how he became infected.

Some massive perspective is needed at the moment. Including following advice and as when it comes out and from experts.

ivykaty44 · 02/03/2020 11:08

How many men & woman went to football on Saturday & Sunday, theatre and pop concerts

Be better to have a short term ban on gatherings of over 100 people to stop the spread, better now than in two weeks time when the damage is already done

halcyondays · 02/03/2020 11:08

I think the government ought to be providing some kind of payment/allowance for anyone who has to self isolate and isn’t covered by sick pay.

PerfectParrot · 02/03/2020 11:09

I would self isolate. But I can afford to. Two years ago there's no way I'd have been able to manage without two weeks pay. I'm glad I didn't have to make the choice at that time, and seriously hope I don't have to soon!

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 11:09

Exactly. As and when the advice comes in. But there are some people. Who unless they physically were to ill to go to work wouldn't take time off because they couldn't afford it.

I just think it's worth discussing that option now rather than when it's to late.

PerfectParrot · 02/03/2020 11:10

That would close pretty much all schools. Gatherings of over 5000 though, I totally agree.

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 11:10

If they can't afford to be off work for two weeks how will they afford to lose their jobs because that could happen if anyone finds out they should be self isolating but they turn up to work anyway. I report anyone who did that.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 11:11

Who would know?
If I cake into contact with somebody diagnosed with Corona virus and I kept it to myself how would you or an employer know?

bellinisurge · 02/03/2020 11:14

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 11:16

Who would know?

Uber seemed to find out pretty quickly when one of their drivers transported someone to hospital with coronavirus. Many other employers will probably find out too as they may be contacted when contacts are being traced. In addition, most people will probably find it hard to keep totally quiet about being told to self isolate. As we see in cases of benefit fraud even close family will sometimes report. People find out.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 11:19

But not straight away.

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 11:21

But not straight away.

Uber suspended the account of one of their drivers straightaway and that person wasn't even told to self isolate. Even if it takes a couple of weeks to find out the employer might still sack them for putting other people at risk . People need to consider whether they want to risk losing their jobs before deciding they can't afford self isolate.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 11:21

I don't actually believe it will even get to that point. I just think it ridiculous that people don't acknowledge that some people can't and won't SI.

So far the mortality rate isn't worrying. So a majority will be fine but get a nasty virus for a bit.

bellinisurge · 02/03/2020 11:25

Instead of having a go at each other, please write to your MP about how self isolation is in the common good but not everyone can afford to act in the common good. www.parliament.uk/get-involved/contact-an-mp-or-lord/

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 11:25

You think the mortality rate isn't worrying?! If 1 or 2% of people die that is a huge number of deaths. Spanish flu only killed about 2%!

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 11:26

And was the population of the planet as out of control as it was when Spanish Flu spread?

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 11:26

And plus. Human life did continue.

Olliephaunt4eyes · 02/03/2020 11:31

If my mortgage provider is OK with my skipping a month's mortgage payment, then sure. If not, then I'm not sure I could. I know I ought to have savings etc but those got wiped out by some unexpected stuff in January. If I don't work, I don't get paid.

Honestly, the very thought makes me feel sick. I know I ought to self isolate if I was told I was at risk, but the thought of having to choose between mortgage and food, maybe losing my home that I've fought so hard to get, potentially losing my job, for what may well be nothing but worry (I may not be infected) is pretty terrifying.
