Would you self isolate?

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:40

The advice is to self isolate if you have travelled from certain areas abroad, even if you have no symptoms. We know in other countries that not everyone has followed this advice.
So be honest, if you had no symptoms but were told to self isolate for 2 weeks in the house, would you? This would mean not leaving the house at all and staying in a separate room from anyone else living in your house.

YABU - No I would not
YANBU - Yes I would

Realistically, with the best will in the world how many people who can't afford to take two weeks of work, will have just come back from one of the affected areas?

SirChing · 02/03/2020 10:22

How's blocking the thread go? If you're experiencing a glitch you can let MN know

Oh bless you, I dont think you have quite got sarcasm down to a fine art yet. I read your self congratulatory post and felt it rude not to answer.

Here's a little tip for you: if you want to argue a point in behalf of others, don't do them a disservice by shouting incorrect, overdramatic rubbish.

And I was referring to your comment about your position at work. Not your home life. I get that you think it's fantastic and am glad that you are so easily pleased. Still not nice to try and boast on a thread where people have expressed their REAL and genuine concerns.

I suggest you watch some episodes of The Office. By emulating David Brent, you may.actually improve your levels of self awareness.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 10:24

So. You're going to try and block now? Because I'm still laughing at you telling me not to bother replying.

I just like to try and solve a problem before it becomes a problem.

Like people needing to eat.

Darkbendis · 02/03/2020 10:24

We would self isolate, if necessary. Since we have only one kitchen and one bathroom, and the house is not very big, it would have to be the whole family, not just me. At least we have a garden so we can get some exercise and fresh air. DH ( who is in a risk group because of his asthma) can work from home so he will probably be paid a full wage, I am self employed but fortunately some of my work can be done from home, I would earn much less but it is doable. I still have most of my "Brexit stash" ( food, toiletries, medicine) and have a bit of savings, there are also credit cards, so we could manage one way or another. However, I am well aware we are privileged and lucky, and that there are a lot of people who will find it very, very difficult, maybe even impossible to manage to self-isolate. Sad I don't know what the solution is Sad

MarieQueenofScots · 02/03/2020 10:26

You know those people who try and give really helpful advice but are always a touch off with it?

We got one.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 02/03/2020 10:27

Surely the government should be looking at some basic payment scheme like you get when you do jury service. Then workplaces could top it up if they wanted

SirChing · 02/03/2020 10:27

@MarieQueenofScots Exactly. If People can afford to go there but would then not be able to pay rent or eat if they had to self isolate for 14 days, then I really do query their financial priorities and planning skills. Maybe putting some money aside for eventualities would be more appropriate than going on holiday.

I can't believe some people on here are defending people that can afford to go on holiday somewhere exotic and honestly believe that those people couldn't then afford two weeks without a wage. That's just bad financial planning and socially irresponsible to still go, if you know you can't afford to quarantine afterwards. I have sweet FA sympathy for people who make that choice.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 10:27

I'm not trying to give advice.

So far nobody has answered the question.

What would people who live in their overdrafts. Who have to rely on food banks and their children's school to feed them do?

How would they not work? How would they survive?

SirChing · 02/03/2020 10:28

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 10:28

The virus has been confirmed in the UK. So now people who aren't even going abroad are at risk.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 02/03/2020 10:29

It will be not just people that have been on holiday soon

SirChing · 02/03/2020 10:30

You're going to try and block now? Christ, the world doesn't revolve around you, you know. Laugh away at me, I don't give a shit. Mystified that you think I care TBH Confused

MarshaBradyo · 02/03/2020 10:31

It will be more than those who go on holiday soon.

But it will also be those with symptoms too. And being in that position doesn’t mean it’s any easier for people with no stretch.

If your child is very ill you’d want to stay home though.

MarieQueenofScots · 02/03/2020 10:31

The virus has been confirmed in the UK. So now people who aren't even going abroad are at risk

And yet the current Government advice is only to self-isolate if you've been abroad to an affected area. So really for the rest of the population it is carry on as normal and be vigilant about handwashing.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 10:31

I know. But after such a bold statement I just thought you'd follow through.

You are of course more than welcome to reply. It being an open forum and all.

SirChing · 02/03/2020 10:32

I just like to try and solve a problem before it becomes a problem

Your skills obviously lay elsewhere.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 10:32

@MarieQueenofScots I agree. I just wonder at what point will that change.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 10:33

@SirChing and yet. No solution has been put forward except to tell people with no money to save money.

Excellent. Problem solved.

Well. I guess the planet is over populated anyway.

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 10:34

I think that once it's endemic in UK only those with symptoms will be told to self isolate unless a whole city is in lockdown. So really no one is going to get away with going to work when they shouldn't.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 02/03/2020 10:36

We wouldn’t get paid (self emp) but we’re not selfish bastards so of course we would!

A few years ago I had a horrible miscarriage, lots of problems, time in hospital, eventually surgery. Neither me nor DH did any work for well over 2 wks, it was a lean quarter but we survived it financially. We didn’t have savings to draw on either as we’d done a load of work in the house and a course of IVF in the 6 months prior so had just begun to save again.

SirChing · 02/03/2020 10:39

Well. I guess the planet is over populated anyway

There are certainly some on it who we could manage without, that's for sure.

And we have provided answers. If you haven't read them or disagree with them, then whatever, but the answers are that there is, and will be, support available. If you want answers to the doom mongering crap that you wrote, which has zero basis in housing law, then you have been provided with that. And if people can't afford to self isolate on return from holiday, I suggest that perhaps they should prioritise savings over pissing off abroad.

Nat6999 · 02/03/2020 10:40

There have been news reports in the city I live in of an ambulance crew in full protective clothing & masks attending a house to collect a patient who I imagine has presented with symptoms of Corona virus. The government are holding a cobra meeting today to discuss banning large gatherings & locking down cities if needed, if this continues I can see a time coming when we won't have a choice about self isolation.

SirChing · 02/03/2020 10:41

@EmmaBridgewater20 I am so sorry that you went through that Flowers

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 10:43

@SirChing you haven't given any answers. Just ones you believe work. They don't.

People who may need to self isolate didn't know that they were going into a diseased zone! So is that an eventuality they should've prepared for. Along with a meteor hitting them and a polar bear attack?

This isn't scare mongering. And if somebody does get scared. That's not my problem.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 10:45

And there are people who are already in the shit with their land lords. And the council. Who are already paying arrears and who are one slip up away from eviction.

I guess if you're around these people a lot they seem more prevalent. But your solutions wouldn't work for them.
