Would you self isolate?

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:40

The advice is to self isolate if you have travelled from certain areas abroad, even if you have no symptoms. We know in other countries that not everyone has followed this advice.
So be honest, if you had no symptoms but were told to self isolate for 2 weeks in the house, would you? This would mean not leaving the house at all and staying in a separate room from anyone else living in your house.

YABU - No I would not
YANBU - Yes I would

The species and human life will continue. This is not a disaster movie. It does not mean that it will not have a major impact if it really takes hold.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 11:39

I'm not saying it wouldn't.
But the disaster would be on a human level.

The planet would probably do a happy dance.

And maybe the next generation or two.

MarshaBradyo · 02/03/2020 11:40

I don’t know why sympathy for one group far exceeds another - ie people worried their at risk dc might be affected. I completely understand why people hope others will not be blasé.

bellinisurge · 02/03/2020 11:47

Can we cut out the eugenics posts, please

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 11:51

What Eugenics posts?
How can selective breeding change what we're discussing?

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 11:56

I'm not saying it wouldn't.

So on the one hand you think losing a couple of weeks pay is a disaster but 500,000 deaths in the UK is no big deal.Hmm I bet you wouldn't be saying that if you felt you or your children would be at high risk of dying from this infection.

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 11:58

If my mortgage provider is OK with my skipping a month's mortgage payment, then sure.

People will be able to come to an arrangement with their mortgage provider if the reason for delay is two weeks isolation.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 12:03

@woodchuck99 of course I wouldn't.
But take the emotion out of it.
The planet is overpopulated.

But I really can't see it coming to that.
Our knowledge of disease and it's properties has advanced since the Spanish flu.

I don't think they had a cobra meeting back then.

You obviously know something the WHO and other experts don't then. Our knowledge of Spanish flu has certainly advanced but this is a new virus and if it kills 1 to 2% of the population the result may be similar. Hopefully it won't come to that but naïve to think it's not a possibility.

bellinisurge · 02/03/2020 12:09

If you are talking about certain percentage need to die to save the planet, that's eugenics. Sordid and nasty. Please stop.

halcyondays · 02/03/2020 12:10

In the absence of a vaccine and much in the way of treatment, the methods of dealing with a pandemic haven’t really changed that much in the last 100 years, i.e try to spot the spread with quarantine, cancel public events etc. As they have been doing in China and Italy.

Of course they had government meetings about Spanish flu, it wasn’t the dark ages.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 12:18

@bellinisurge

No it's not.

Eugenics* is the practice or advocacy of improving the human species by selectively mating people with specific desirable hereditary traits. It aims to reduce human suffering by “breeding out” disease, disabilities and so-called undesirable characteristics from the human population

SirChing · 02/03/2020 12:24

Along with 20% of those infected needing hospital treatment due to being seriously ill, and suffering long term lung damage. And That's not "only" the old and physically compromised. They may be the ones who die, but the seriously ill cut across demographics.

If people aren't worried about this virus, and the massive steps which are needed to slow it down, they simply have understood it.

China has far more medical equipment per person than we have. And are far more totalitarian in enforcing quarantine. Yet is still ran rampant in China. There is no way we can match their response.

curlsnotfrizz · 02/03/2020 12:27

it does not. It kills 1-2 per cent of those infected. I. China it infected only a very small part of the population.

PinkSqidgyPig · 02/03/2020 12:31

If I had to self isolate I'd change the address on my supermarket order (not sure if Tesco facilitate this, but Ocado do) arrange via phone for my neighbour to be the delivery address, then just pop it over the wall between our houses, then phone to let me know. Then I could go and bring it in my house.
This could be to a friend/relative who would be willing to drop it to your door if you don't live bc in a terrace, like me.

The people I'm more concerned about are those using food banks to manage each week.
If we didn't have a government who are so disassociated from ordinary life I'd not feel so concerned.

I think we are going to need to help each other out a bit more for a while.

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 12:31

Yes, it kills 1 to 2% of those infected but it may infect 60 to 80% of the population.

China it infected only a very small part of the population.

So far! You don't think it's over there yet do you? And even if it is contained that would be due to quite draconian measures and I'm not sure that they could be achieved here.

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 12:34

Exactly. People who are concerned because they think their risk of death will be low should perhaps think about the 20% chance they will need hospital treatment.

SirChing · 02/03/2020 12:34

In the worst case scenario, it is estimated 60% of the population would get this. That's nearly 41 million people. 2% of those is about 400,000. A huge number. Not to mention finding hospital care for 8 million who are seriously unwell.

The numbers are huge and we can only.slow it down as much as possible so there aren't loads of people infected at once.

bellinisurge · 02/03/2020 12:42

All right then. I salute a pedant because I am one myself. But your posts on this are tasteless "survival of the fittest" and you need to reflect on that.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 02/03/2020 12:46

I don't.

The planet is overpopulated. That's factual. It would be a personal trashed you for our loved ones to die.
My Nanna wouldn't make it. That would devastate me beyond words.

But in about 3 generations a massive population decrease may be a good thing.

Olliephaunt4eyes · 02/03/2020 12:49

Have the major banks confirmed this?

SirChing · 02/03/2020 12:49

I agree. There is no "silver lining" to 400000 people dying.

There are some valid points about people struggling, but to care more about people's finances than the people themselves dying, is actually quite sick.

woodchuck99 · 02/03/2020 12:50

My Nanna wouldn't make it. That would devastate me beyond words.

You might not make it either. I bet you aren't willing to sacrifice yourself for the good of the planet.
