Would you cope with quarantine?

Just that really, if we were all told to stay home and self quarantine for two weeks, how would you and your family cope?

DD would be fine as long as she had her tablet
I would be fine for a few days but would start to get stir crazy after that
Would probably have enough food to last 2 weeks - might just be plain pasta and rice by the end, but we would survive.

We would be absolutely fine. We always have pretty full food cupboards, fridge and freezer so could easily go 2, 3, 4 or probably more weeks.

Lots of dvd's (provided we had electric), loads of recorded tv to catch up on, literally hundreds of books (we are both big readers) plus a kindle. We also have loads of work to do in the house and most of the materials to do it (just never get time as DH works long hours). I have lots of wool so could knit or actually get round to teaching myself to crochet.

I often don't go out for days and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Quite happy with my own company and never get bored.

I would also love that DH would be home so we could spend time together

WhatKatyDidNot · 26/02/2020 09:51

I have a fully stocked cupboard and freezer, a Netflix want-to-watch list that would last months, and a Kindle full of books I haven't had time to read. I'd be fine!

geekone · 26/02/2020 09:55

What about the dogs? Who would walk them? Dog walkers couldn’t pick them up and you can’t go outside!!!

MinesaPinot · 26/02/2020 09:55

Me and DH would be fine. I could do some work from home and there's plenty of house jobs to be getting on with. And there's the telly and WiFi, books to read. Maybe I could re-start my card making. It would give me a chance to sort the loft out!

Only real downside is that if DH was quarantined he would lose two weeks pay as he's self-employed.

AmazingGreats · 26/02/2020 09:57

If I could get shopping delivered it would be ok. I mean we'd have major cabin fever but it wouldn't be terrible. If everybody was in quarantine at the same time we would run out of things like nappies, baby wipes and toilet rolls though so that could get a bit grim.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 26/02/2020 09:58

as long as we have gas and electricity, we'll be absolutely fine. We don't even need the tv frankly.

For basic supplies, depends if it's just us or the whole town.
If it's just your family, you can get online shops, ask the driver to drop it at the end of the drive and pick it up when he's gone.
Alternative, pay for a click and collect and ask a friend to pick it up for you.

If it's the whole town, it would be a lot more tricky.

BonnesVacances · 26/02/2020 09:58

It's an interesting question. DD(18) has had ME for 4 years and spent the first 2 years "quarantined" in that she never left the house and barely saw another soul except her family. Thousands of people live like this every day because they're ill or infirm. It's only when you have to consider what enforced "quarantine" would be like that it becomes easier to understand what isolating lives some people are forced to lead.

WhatKatyDidNot · 26/02/2020 10:03

What about the dogs? Who would walk them?

Mine is old and knackered. He'd breathe a sigh of relief, bless him.

Nat6999 · 26/02/2020 10:04

Being confined to the house for 2 weeks wouldn't bother me one bit. I'm mainly housebound due to illness, the being stuck in the house bit wouldn't be anything new, as long as I had food & drink I would be fine, I read, do crochet, watch TV, spend time online, have managed to find almost everything I need to buy online, if I really wanted to would never need to leave the house again.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/02/2020 10:07

I'm self employed as is dp so i would really rather not lose 2 lots of wages for 2 weeks, but I think we would be fine. My kids would quite happy to sit infront of xboxs and tablets for 2 weeks, and in that situation I would definitely let them 😂. I don't have enough food to lat until the end of this week, never mind another week too.

geekone · 26/02/2020 10:07

@WhatKatyDidNot mine is giant and 2 and needs 3 hours exercise a day😱 he would drive me NUTS

AryaStarkWolf · 26/02/2020 10:07

Yeah, I would but we could badly do with a food shop at the moment so hopefully it happens after we stock up a bit Grin

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/02/2020 10:07

The dog would have a problem with it though.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 26/02/2020 10:08

We would be allowed in the garden though, wouldn't we?

If we are all stuck in the house for 2 weeks, we'll just get fat, none of us is used to sitting down all day Grin

geekone · 26/02/2020 10:08

My DD also plays football 6 days a week, sometimes twice in one evening, he would also send me doolally!

geekone · 26/02/2020 10:08

DS doh’

TrashPanda · 26/02/2020 10:15

We are in a 2 bed flat with no garden or outside space for me, DP and 3 boys aged 10, 5 & 2. We'd go mad, really quickly. Everyone would be on top of each other. If I was on my own, I'd be able to work from home but only doing the easier half of my role and it would be fine.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 26/02/2020 10:16

Me and DD would go potty after a few days. My mum would have to do my shopping and leave it in the back garden for me to get when she left.

DD is starting with her teenage strops so I think we'd have to keep separate zones in the house so we didnt get tempted to kill each other.

Hadjab · 26/02/2020 10:16

I’ll let you know when I get back from Singapore in 10 days time!!

RB68 · 26/02/2020 10:21

Online orders left on doorstep for food - so no issue there
Activities, I would still walk the dog we are quite isolated anyway and would be possible to do avoiding people if not in work.
Work we work from home so no issue there although it would be a pain for DH as he is the one that travels etc but at the moment overloaded with work stuff and would do him good to have a few weeks admin and filing - lol
We have TV, games, books, internet etc etc might even get some gardening done and sorting and cleaning

bellinisurge · 26/02/2020 10:22

"you can get online shops, "
So delivery drivers aren't affected by school closures or the requirement to self isolate Hmm.
"Just get a friend to do it". Rather missing the point on quarantine here. And obviously the possibility that your friend is going to be affected too.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 26/02/2020 10:26

bellinisurge
that's why we made the point of "family quarantine' vs "town quarantine".

Quite a few of us also stated that we assumed electricity (and wifi) would still work too.

We are all aware that if we had to stay locked in for several, with no food delivered, no running water, and would be shot dead if we put the nose outside, we'll probably die of dehydration and starvation.
We are not quite there yet are we?

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 26/02/2020 10:27

"Just get a friend to do it". Rather missing the point on quarantine here.
why?

We are not expecting friends to cook here, just to drop things at the end of the drive or in the street...

GreenLeaf88 · 26/02/2020 10:30

I'd be fine and kids would be fine as long as we have WiFi 🤣. I love being at home anyways and this would be a great excuse to not have to go out. I've been slowly stocking up on frozen foods just in case and lactose free milk that lasts longer than regular milk. I would also attempt to home school my kids so they could keep up with their reading and math. Might be hard for my husband as he can technically work from home but his job also requires a lot of travel.

SoundofSilence · 26/02/2020 10:31

We could manage, although we wouldn't like our diet or each other by the end of it. I would be worried about Ddog. He is in the final stages of his life, and if he deteriorated enough to need his final vet appointment during the quarantine period he might suffer unnecessarily as a result.

As DS1 has just got back from skiing with the school in northern Italy this is a real (but hopefully small) possibility for us. They've been instructed to go to school as normal unless they are showing symptoms as it wasn't in one of the affected areas, but he's cancelling out of school activities for the next two weeks in fairness to others. I've cancelled a family visit as my Dad is not in good health and DP and I have talked to our employers and are arranging our work schedules and resources to be able to work from home as effectively as possible if self quarantined.

The only other piece I could move in advance is to have Ddog PTS now, and that's a step I can't bring myself to take. I will gamble on that one.
