When you're anxious, it's really tempting to scour the web for news stories and to keep checking for updates, hoping for reassurance or just more information.
I think it can be helpful to try to accept that we can't find out what happens in the Coronavirus box set by binge watching. We have to wait and see what happens in each new episode as and when it comes out, and yes it is a bit scary not knowing and fearing that it might be awful, but we can't get reassurance any quicker by losing hours of our lives to reading about it every day. We need to try to park it, as something we're following in the background, not the main focus of our daily lives.
I agree with whoever said check the news every so often, not all the time. Meditation can also be really good for slowing down racing anxious thoughts, as is distracting yourself with lighthearted tv and podcasts. It's important to stick to normal routines and not let everything drop in favour of reading the news or planning for possible illness - lots of time away from the web, relaxing tv to wind down, plenty of sleep.
There are some good chrome extensions and apps for phones that will let you limit how much the you can spend reading the news or browsing (to a certain amount per hour or per day). HeadSpace and Calm are good for meditation, too.
Our anxious brains want resolution right now, not uncertainty, but we're going to be stuck with uncertainty for a while. We will cope though - as a society and as individuals we have so many strengths that put us in a really good position to deal with whatever happens.
