The 'Positive Mental Health' Corona virus thread

There are a lot of posts of people worrying. I thought it could be helpful to share positive and assuring information in one thread.

For me, the most reassuring thing so far is the fact that of approx. 1500 people in the UK suspected to have and tested for CV have come back as negative.

@twiglet1234

By using the term 'make up', I'm not sure if you meant you didn't have time to collate it or you think I was accusing you of fabricating it?

I'm case it's the latter, I was asking as I thought that if it's hosted somewhere it may be updated regularly 😊

Thank you for the information, very useful.

The 2% death rate is in Hubei province. The death rate for the rest of China and the rest of the world is much lower, more like 0.2%.

^ This is not correct.

I'm not going to correct it as I appreciate you're looking for positives but maybe stick to things that are accurate?

Ontopofthesunset · 14/02/2020 20:12

WHO lists cases on a country by country basis in their daily status reports; www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situation-reports/. The reports also state whether the cases were acquired within the country.

The death rate outside China, including Hong Kong SAR as China, is currently 0.4%. The newest Chinese figures suggest a death rate of 2.8%. Figures outside China are pretty low though and many in the early stages.

Ontopofthesunset · 14/02/2020 20:12

Those are my calculations based on today's figures, by the way.

GalleryWall · 14/02/2020 23:26

Look, people need to stop nit picking over numbers unless someone posts a wild claim. It's clear here that people are making their own interpretations of the numbers and that's fine, it's exactly what the newspapers do.

Newspapers also twist stories and use information out of context deliberately to frighten people, at worst, this is doing the same but to reassure people and find the positive rather than frighten.

Stop using this thread as an opportunity to be smug at best and altruistic at worst. There is literally nothing you are adding to this thread by correcting numbers which are interpreted positively. You are basically saying 'sorry, actually no you have more chance of things going wrong than you think'. It's not helpful and not in the spirit of the thread.

Curiosity101 · 15/02/2020 07:21

There is literally nothing you are adding to this thread by correcting numbers which are interpreted positively.

Mid information is mis information. You wouldn't lie to purposefully paint a positive picture, so people shouldn't make up numbers either (even if it's being done with good intentions).

The point of this thread was surely to share the positive facts? (And there are plenty).

Ontopofthesunset · 15/02/2020 10:35

Well, the truth is nobody, including the WHO, has any idea of the real death rate because, as Steve from Brighton proves, there are obviously asymptomatic carriers out there and nobody knows how many mildly ill or completely asymptomatic people there are in China. Also it takes some time for those who are seriously ill to either recover or die. So I agree there's not much point nitpicking about it.

RapidRainbow · 15/02/2020 11:48

There is a sensationalist headline in one of the red tops this morning. The actual information quotes a Professor who says he would rather be found to have been "overreacting" than underreacting. His defined overreaction is that if the CV takes a hold in the UK, 1% of the population could potentially die.

That's a lot of 'if' s, 'could' s and 'potential' s behind one scary headline!

That information also brings it back in line closely to the flu.

Its a shame we can't dispute the newspapers on a comparable scale to people correcting individuals on here.

This is the thread I needed. Thank you

FlowerTink · 15/02/2020 13:12

Sky news reporting all but one of the 9 patients diagnosed with coronavirus have been discharged. Pleased over here that the recovery rate looks good.

everythingisginandroses · 15/02/2020 13:17

Thank you, everyone Flowers I don't suffer from any anxiety but we are going to Brighton this week...

Namechanger20183110 · 15/02/2020 14:05

@FlowerTink The DM are reporting that too however have chosen to make it a barely noticeable headline tucked away in the corner, compared to the humongous "British scientist says 400,000 UK citizens will die" headline. And still people will deny that one of the reasons this story is so frenzied is due to our sensationalist media

MrsMeg1 · 15/02/2020 14:33

That’s reassuring, I had been thinking there was little information about them in the media. I wonder if the remaining person has complications.

Ontopofthesunset · 15/02/2020 14:37

The remaining person is the Chinese woman in London who was most recently diagnosed.

RapidRainbow · 15/02/2020 15:24

I've had a quick glance and ofvthe countries on both lists, only Malaysia and the US have had one further case each. Japan has more but this is l+presumably from the ship so is to be expected.

Map taken from BBC News article verifying 8 people now free of CV.

I'm so glad this thread is helping people, it's helped me! I'm optimistic that this could be brought under control like SARS was.

I think I posted this before, but on another thread.

Yesterday (Friday) on the channel 5 show. The Jeremy Vine show. They had a virologist who calmly explained various stats and compared this to other viruses.

Honestly it really calmed me down. If anyone is really panicking I recommend you watch it.

madeyemoodysmum · 16/02/2020 06:29

I just flew into holiday to Italy from the uk and they were taken temperatures of all passengers Even us from uk.
Made me reassured about travelling.

alreadytaken · 16/02/2020 09:25

many people in this country have tests - over 3000 now - and only 9 cases have been positive. They have either recovered completely or are recovering.

None of the British people rescued from Wuhan had contracted the virus.

Family members of those infected have not always been infected, perhaps because some have better hygiene than others?

What is happening in China is not a good guide to what will happen here. China is an extremely crowded country with a lot of heavy smokers and people who have more of the receptors that increase the risk of getting the virus. Chinese medicine uses animal parts, including the animals that may have transmitted this to humans.

Practise good hand hygiene. Wash between your figures, wet your hands before applying soap. Always wash hands before eating. If you need to use the tube use hand sanitiser or wash hands as soon as you can. Then you reduce the risk of getting "normal" flu and thinking you have coronavirus.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/02/2020 10:18

Confirmed cases in China are down for the third day running, according to a report on the World Service during the night.

ethelfleda · 16/02/2020 11:18

As if some arseholes have wandered on to this thread and started having a go at people for their maths not being on point... read the room, people!!

Tartan333 · 16/02/2020 11:36

Thank you for this thread, I have been very anxious about this and it has helped

GalleryWall · 16/02/2020 12:22

Really good news that cases are dropping in China. Makes me wonder if China was a bit slow to recognise/acknowledge the emergency which was how it was able to take such a strong hold in Wuhan but has meant that every other country acting as soon ab the 1st generation of infections arrive will be able to stop it in its tracks.

RapidRainbow · 17/02/2020 15:17

'As of 17 February, a total of 4,501 people have been tested, of which 4,492 were confirmed negative and 9 positive.'

From Public Health England. I think we can presume that not just anybody is going to get tested for CV so that number must be made up of people who have developed symptoms after travelling through China or been in contact with someone who has been diagnosed. That is a LOT of suspected cases that have come back negative which is encouraging. Could we also hope that infection rate is reduced outside of China (for reasons already mentioned above about their hygiene and health care system).

I've gone back to going about my business as normal, won't be going to cinema for a while but have been bowling and shopping today as normal. Only difference is making everyone wash hands as we left bowling and when we arrive home after shopping which isn't the worst idea after using bowling balls and handling lots of 2ps in the arcades!!!

RapidRainbow · 18/02/2020 19:38

As of 18 February, a total of 4,916 people have been tested, of which 4,907 were confirmed negative and 9 positive.
