There are a lot of posts of people worrying. I thought it could be helpful to share positive and assuring information in one thread.

For me, the most reassuring thing so far is the fact that of approx. 1500 people in the UK suspected to have and tested for CV have come back as negative.

Hi I’ve just found this thread. I really need this right now as I’m pretty terrified. I have severe health anxiety and have had it since I was a teen.

My current issues, if anyone can reassure me (please).

  1. I’ve noticed there are two strains of the virus now, including a mild aggressive strain. When I read this, my stomach dropped.
  2. People keep posting on a coronavirus Facebook group I’m on about a ‘Cyclone Storm’ I may not have spelt that right! And then about it affecting younger adults.
  3. How on earth do you know the difference between a heavy cold/viral chest infection etc and this?
Alsohuman · 05/03/2020 11:29

How on earth do you know the difference between a heavy cold/viral chest infection etc and this?

If you don’t know the difference, why worry about it? It’s obviously not that bad if you don’t know you’ve got it.

tud41 · 05/03/2020 11:48

@CathyandHeathcliff just to confirm the 2 strains is actually a positive one as the more aggressive of the 2 strains is actually dying out as it has burned itself out in China so many of the new cases will be the less aggressive strain so over the next week or so the death rate should drop dramatically.

MarshaBradyo · 05/03/2020 11:52

Tud41 re strains that is a nice post, bravo for knowing and posting this stuff.

Spacecadetagain · 05/03/2020 12:01

In theory the more aggressive strain should be struggling as it tends to hospitalise people very quickly meaning human intervention measures make it more difficult to spread where as the less aggressive version may mean people carry on as normal for a while therefore spreading the infection .

screamer1 · 05/03/2020 12:05

I posted this on the other thread but maybe light relief more welcome here.

The best thing you can do is assume it is a normal-for-this-country-and-this-time-of-year infection unless it does not involve sneezing or being snotty with runny eyes, but specifically a slightly-to-medium raised fever, combined with a frequent tickly cough and constant shortness of breath.

The symptoms of covid-19 are generally not the same as those of most colds and flus, because they don't involve sneezing. Or to put it as the health folk have: "Notably, the COVID-19 infection rarely seems to cause a runny nose, sneezing, or sore throat (these symptoms have been observed in only about 5% of patients). Sore throat, sneezing, and stuffy nose are most often signs of a cold."

SureTry · 05/03/2020 12:06

I'm glad I came back here. I stopped in my local shop and the newspaper headlines are horrific. The media should be ashamed of themselves.

CathyandHeathcliff · 05/03/2020 12:27

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime I had an ongoing tickle cough/throat and a low fever a couple of weeks ago, as did my partner and mum...I didn’t really have shortness of breath, but I had a horrible dry mouth and throat constantly with a little tickle feeling fairly persistently...

CathyandHeathcliff · 05/03/2020 12:28

Thanks for the reassurance re: the two strains thing. People seem to be panicking on Facebook about it!

Notcool1984 · 05/03/2020 12:38

I found an article in New York Times today interviewing people with coronavirus from Diamond Cruise Ship VERY reassuring x

Canshopwillshop · 05/03/2020 12:43

@screamer1 😅

DoubleTweenQueen · 05/03/2020 12:45

This two strains thing has been given way too much weight. What is your background tud41, out of interest?

MinesaPinot · 05/03/2020 12:51

Blimey, I had a cough that came on quite quickly a few weeks ago - sore throat on the way back from class, tickly cough in work the following day and then freezing in the evening at home but back of my neck was burning! Knocked me off my feet for a few days but otherwise it's gone off. DH didn't catch it, and neither did any of my workmates when I went back to work, but it does make you think (well it does me!)

Anyway, more positive news - I managed to get handgel today. Boots and Superdrug were being very sensible and only allowing 2 per customer, despite some City type who was very aggrieved at not being allowed to buy more "to protect his family". I've told DH that we've only got to wait for my diamante gas mask and spangly Repels All Anti Virus suit from Amazon and we will be ready for our cruise at the end of April!

peoplepleaser1 · 05/03/2020 13:00

My mum has just told me I'll have 'blood on my hands' Id I let DS go to Austria with his school in April (via coach not plane).

My plan was to see how things develop and decide nearer the time but she's pushed me into full fear mode!

magimedi · 05/03/2020 13:04

Just to make you all laugh (which we need) this is an article about an Aussie newspaper printing a special TOILET PAPER edition!!

Roussette · 05/03/2020 13:45

There is no handgel in my County, I swear.

I don't want it as an alternative to hand washing but to use it on a longhaul flight. Ideally just one bottle! And a pack of antiseptic wipes.

If anyone hears of any online, can they post it here!

Jrobhatch29 · 05/03/2020 14:13

Im so glad i found this. I suffer from extreme health anxiety and been so worried as im pregnant. Ive been glued to that other thread and its had me so anxious and depressed. I know im obsessively worried but even im not as bad as the doom and gloom on there. Reading these posts are so resfreshing. I tried to post that all the active cases currently in the world wouldnt even half fill wembley stadium, but was ignored. Im going to just read this thread now, and take each day as it comes.

Canshopwillshop · 05/03/2020 14:30

@peoplepleaser1 - I’m in the same position. DS (13) is due to go to Paris at the end of this month. I’m doing the same as you and just keeping an eye on his things develop. Try not to listen to your mum and rely on your own instincts/information.

A few things to bear in mind are:
Children/teens are in a v low risk group
They probably have as much chance of catching the virus here
Obviously the school will not go ahead if the areas they are due to visit become too risky.

My DD has just returned from a trip to Normandy. I was a bit worried about the ferry etc but I just sent her with hand gel and drummed into her the importance of hand washing etc. Apparently the teachers on the trip were also constantly making them use hand gel every time they went anywhere.

userxx · 05/03/2020 14:57

@Jrobhatch29 Do not go back in there. They are all whipping each other up into a frenzy, it's so bizarre! I think there will be a lot of disappointed people when the world doesn't actually end........ plus they will have fuck loads of pasta and loo rolls :)

IpanemaGallina · 05/03/2020 15:05

Screamer1 thank you. That made me laugh out loud which I needed. I’m not in a panic over cv but I’m definitely twitchy as myself and ds are asthmatics.

Layladylay234 · 05/03/2020 15:11

userxx And hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer that will last until the end of time!

littlequestion · 05/03/2020 15:12

De-lurking to share this which is reassuring - Harvard doctor says we should look at the (low) death rate on the cruise ship to see true figures

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8076395/Leading-doctor-claims-coronavirus-isnt-deadly-feared-death-rate-1.html

madeyemoodysmum · 05/03/2020 15:20

I'd would be more worried if there were untreatable cases of measles TB and polio going around.

Anyone older than 40 remember the AIDS panic of the 80's.

I've got used to the situation now and this thread helps a lot.

3rd child from ski trip negative. Hope to get dds results tomorrow. She is getting VERY bored now.
