The 'Positive Mental Health' Corona virus thread

RapidRainbow · 13/02/2020 10:42

There are a lot of posts of people worrying. I thought it could be helpful to share positive and assuring information in one thread.

For me, the most reassuring thing so far is the fact that of approx. 1500 people in the UK suspected to have and tested for CV have come back as negative.

Morning all, glad to be checking in here, trying to just tale things a day at a time, thank you to you all for providing such sensible information.

Eebahgumlass · 05/03/2020 07:42

Agree @Roussette that better hygiene is a positive side effect. Someone pointed out I think on this thread or perhaps in one of the articles that improved hygiene might help mitigate spread of normal flu and winter viruses as well.

Tartan333 · 05/03/2020 07:45

Thank you for everyone posting on this thread. My mental health has been suffering with terrible anxiety regarding coronavirus and this continues to help.

estherfrewen · 05/03/2020 07:50

Thank you for this thread. My DS (16) has been really anxious over this and now I can share some positivity with him! All three of us have had a nasty virus this month and in the quiet way teenagers have I can tell he has been worried. I've read other threads on this topic this week but will now stick to this - just found ut this morning.

I saw the pictures on pollution levels dropping in China. It was astonishing how quickly levels dropped.

ExpletiveDelighted · 05/03/2020 07:50

I am finding one downside to better hygiene, the eczema on my hands has really flared up this week, not sure if it's down to hand sanitiser or some Zoflora I used earlier in the week (I have suspected Zoflora before).

ExpletiveDelighted · 05/03/2020 07:53

Is your DS in his gcse year Esther? Mine is and disruption to school is a big concern.

PineappleDanish · 05/03/2020 07:53

I also think it's important to remember that the "total figures" include people who have had it and completely recovered. Like the "super spreader" in Brighton who caught it in Singapore, spread it around to his friends and family, had very minor symptoms and is now totally fine.

It's not the same as the number of people in hospital, or the number of people who are ill right now.

namechangedforthecraic · 05/03/2020 07:57

Thinking about percentages - so roughly 95,000 people have had the virus worldwide so far, and the population of UK is roughly 66,000,000? So even if the total number or cases had been here in the uk then it would still only be 0.0014% of the population? Is that right?

EsioTrot · 05/03/2020 08:03

Thank you so much for this thread. My anxiety levels have gone through the roof in the last week -- have other chronic challenging life situations to deal with which I've coped with for the last few years but this just floored me. Embarrassingly I ended up having to go to the doctor and start medication.
This thread is so helpful. It's great having people who have knowledge and understanding come along and de-bunk some of the more scary stats.
I've stopped reading the news. I only allow myself to check the stats once per day and I'm checking in here. It's helping. Thank you so much to all who are contributing.

Jenasaurus · 05/03/2020 08:04

Studies have been directed outside the human bodies and found that Gilead’s remdesivir compound and the off-patent chloroquine jungle fever sedate are both “exceptionally compelling” in the control of coronavirus disease, the Wuhan establishment and the Beijing Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology said in an examination distributed in Cell Research Journal.

China is applying for a patent so they must believe they are close to finding an effective treatment or hopefully a cure

userxx · 05/03/2020 08:04

Just read on the news that 3 cases have been confirmed in my area. Keeping positive and being logical about it.

@InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud Do try and get some sleep, anxiety is so much worse when you're tired.

NoRoomInBed · 05/03/2020 08:28

Joining this thread as I've been getting worried. I have asthma same as dc and my oh has lung issues and the rest of family has old age and diabetes type 1 so it's a worry for me.

This is a good idea thank you

Keynote1 · 05/03/2020 08:38

We have had colds and hubby has had sneezing attack this morning - cue instant panic. There are so many other cold etc around. Trying to be sensible and not worry but so on edge .

BearimyJeremy · 05/03/2020 08:47

The 'empty shelf' pictures can be misleading. There was one in the mail of milk cartons on shelves... which were actually still half full, like any normal evening at Tesco! No loaves of bread... but tons of baps and croissants... And I noted last night toilet roll isn't remotely in short supply near me! They always pick some crappy Tesco Metro in central London which naturally have huge numbers passing through. Try coming to a boring high street in the Midlands and it's not quite as frantic but then that doesn't make a good story does it?

Sunshinegirl82 · 05/03/2020 08:48

I'm so angry with the media for making people so frightened.

Me, DS1 and DS2 have had hacking coughs for well over a week. We do not have Corona, it's a standard Winter virus. We are all fine, no need to even see the GP. Paracetamol and calpol at home.

Even if you were to catch it it is not a death sentence. The chances of catching it are very low and the chances of recovering quite quickly if you do catch it are very high.

This too shall pass.

estherfrewen · 05/03/2020 09:16

@ExpletiveDelighted - yes GCSE year here. Roll on June!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 05/03/2020 09:24

This is a great thread - thanks! I have been waking at night worrying about it all, not helped by the fact that I have a horrid cold/virus at the moment with bunged up nose, headache and cough which is the reason I wake up in the first place!

My thoughts on the people who are worrying about supermarket deliveries not being able to happen because of drivers and pickers being ill are that they are assuming there that everybody is ill at the same time! Of course there may be a shortage of personnel for a while, but there will be others who are not sick at that time and if and when they are, the original people will have recovered!

DoubleTweenQueen · 05/03/2020 09:33

I know I said I would review that study, however on my search this morning I have found a better source: www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-study-looking-at-whether-there-are-two-strains-of-the-novel-coronavirus/ The \two strain’ study is not a large one, and any conclusions highly preliminary.
The main message is - keep science interpretation to the scientists, not the press, particularly the DF whose ‘science’ editor must be an over-excited 5yr old.
Also - this is an ongoing situation, and the virologists & epidemiologists are all over it, but conclusions will be lagging behind the disease.
The most important thing for now is identifying and isolating patients; preventing spread as much as humanly possible - and we all can play our part in that. This virus will be heterogenous in circulation. There will be a natural evolution in it, through inherent mutation and selective pressures now it is in humans, and this is likely to have an effect on severity of disease, along with other known risk factors.

Keep yourselves mentally as well as physically healthy and take every opportunity to love your life and those in it. I have found a new appreciation of that.

Can I ask for no case updates on here, or speculative stuff about death rates or severity of disease - that happens on another series of threads, and this is a different place. TIA.

ExpletiveDelighted · 05/03/2020 09:37

The loo roll section in my local Lidl was completely bare last night, but I imagine it will be restocked today.

Roll on June indeed @estherfrewen. DS seems less worried now than he was when this all started up, but it is unsettling. He doesn't work very well at home, but is very used to doing most of his homework online so that's good.

I've got a tickly cough that has lingered on for weeks and while I don't think for a moment I have CV I'm a bit nervous that I will become a social outcast! Off to the GP later with it.

DoubleTweenQueen · 05/03/2020 09:48

Warm honey & lemon is good for tickly coughs :)

I am looking forward to the general population being more aware of good hygiene, and not just during the winter. That will save lives, no question.

DoubleTweenQueen · 05/03/2020 09:59

In response to Jenasaurus’ post, Gilead have Phase 3 clinical studies starting this month:
www.gilead.com/news-and-press/press-room/press-releases/2020/2/gilead-sciences-initiates-two-phase-3-studies-of-investigational-antiviral-remdesivir-for-the-treatment-of-covid-19

alreadytaken · 05/03/2020 10:18

Given the mass hysteria about death rates elsewhere I think it is helpful to sometimes remind people that it is mass hysteria. The best guide we have to what might happen in the uk is probably still the cruise ship - and they were an older than average population and quite likely with other conditions. Despite the poor conditions on the boat quite a lot of people didnt get the virus. A very small number have died - and I repeat that was a high risk population.

Went to visit junior doctor child in London and hugged them regardless. I'm fine :) They tell me that the mad winter rush has passed - perhaps the improved hand hygiene is already having benefits for the NHS.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/03/2020 10:42

In their hospital perhaps. Easing is perhaps a better description and the pandemic plans are in place and being put into action. Which is reassuring.
