The 'Positive Mental Health' Corona virus thread

There are a lot of posts of people worrying. I thought it could be helpful to share positive and assuring information in one thread.

For me, the most reassuring thing so far is the fact that of approx. 1500 people in the UK suspected to have and tested for CV have come back as negative.

@KaptenKrusty

That may just prolong the lives of their children as it gives them a chance to breathe fresh air! Could do their long term health prospects good.

Would like to add to my recent post about population/infection ratio. If 0.5% of the UK is infected, its likely it could be this new weaker strain. I read similar that deadly viruses cannot infect huge masses as they kill their hosts preventing transmission as people who are critical do not go about their business anymore, weaker viruses spread more because people can continue with their lives and live to share the bugs.

I think that’s a great idea Rapid, and yes I get overly excited by stuff like that too!

Canshopwillshop · 04/03/2020 22:35

@RapidRainbow - definitely I’m in!

CaveMum · 04/03/2020 22:36

Yes I remember hearing a virologist talking about Ebola during the last big outbreak. He said it was actually a very ineffective virus because it incapacitated/killed its host so quickly that it couldn’t really spread itself very far. That’s why outbreaks tend to be very localised and over relatively quickly.

I'm with you on ''Positive Mental Health' threads for the future.

86 cases in the UK - population of 66million - can someone tell me the percentage (and how the fuck you do that sum!!**) - pretty please!

(** I'd really like to work out how to do percentages!)

Sunshinegirl82 · 04/03/2020 22:47

0.00013%

Callimanco · 04/03/2020 22:49

The percentage of Britain's who have or have had a positive Corona virus test based on those stats is 0.0000013 percent.
Just over 1 in 1 million chance.

You just divide the numbers :)

mildlymiffed · 04/03/2020 22:49

Just to add my thanks for this thread. I too suffer with anxiety, and have been making ridiculous plans in my head. My poor hands are washed ragged! I've never been so clean!

Spacecadetagain · 04/03/2020 22:56

Popping onto this thread because up until today I was managing to stay calm but now I feel terrified for me and my DCs . I’ve been on the other threads and it’s making me feel depressed . I definitely need some positivity! I have health issues so I’m terrified I’m going to get it and die and leave my DCs without a mother (I’m a divorced line parent (

Spacecadetagain · 04/03/2020 22:57

Lone *sorry fat fingers

Me too. This thread is a little haven of sanity.

7Days · 04/03/2020 23:10

It's alright saying just divide it, I dont even know how many zeros are in a million! Bet I'm not the only one either.....

Not knowing how many zeros in a million is probably adding to mass hysteria

tud41 · 04/03/2020 23:12

For people coming in New today feeling anxious.. It has probably been one of the most positive days in a while... Here are some of the things that have come out today..

2 strains of the virus have now been identified, one more deadly than the other and the more deadly one has been in rapid decline since January. Leaving its older more unfit sister to spread around more now. meaning we will likely see the amount of critical and death rate reduce massively (we may not see these figures for a week or so but they will be coming). China's high critical and death figures will also be attributed to their terrible pollution levels, and insanely high smoking stats giving many of them breathing issues anyway.

World wide active cases have actually been dropping since mid February... The media wouldn't want people to know that tho as it won't sell papers :)

China has peaked seeing decline day in day out at the moment and it has infected 0.0014% of their population.... So you try and tell me where governments are getting an 80% of the population infected figure.(its an absolute worst case scenario to cover their own backs)

We are ranked second best country in the world to deal with this situation and the WHO have said everything that has been done and what the government's plans are if it worsens are right up there with what they would hope we would do.

Lastly although UK cases rose by the highest number so far only 3 had not been traveling or in close contact with someone who had the virus which shows that there is no large scale community spread so far of the virus.

Have a nice evening all... Oh and I'm in for a feel good thread next time :)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/03/2020 23:15

If there is a positive mental health thread next time there's a scare like the present one, I will definitely post positive things that I find about it -- if I find the thread!

Soccermum13 · 04/03/2020 23:16

Like spacecadet up til today I was managing to stay calm. Then tonight I suddenly developed shivers, freezing cold, now have temperature. Have had slight intermittent cough For a few days - and a bit of sneezing (but no other cold symptoms). Dh has also been off work with temperature and generally feeling weak. He’s now slightly better but not completely. We haven’t knowingly had contact with anyone from infected areas but I worry that it could now come from anywhere. The main reason for my panic is that I was hospitalised with pneumonia a few years ago and was dependent on antibiotics. It was a scary experience. I also have asthma. But don’t know how much of this is anxiety. This thread has been a godsend and was keeping me sane until this fever came on!

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/03/2020 23:31

I wrote a loong piece about the research on the virus that's been bandied about today to interpret it, but it's disappeared! Trying to do it between laundry and book day costume! I'll get back to you tomorrow X

Soccermum13 · 04/03/2020 23:34

Thank you double!

Spacecadetagain · 04/03/2020 23:50

@soccermum13 .. Yes I’m the same having had pneumonia 15 years ago .. I couldn’t bare the thought of that again and know it’s left scar tissue on my lungs .. checking into this thread today had helped Certainly

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 23:52

Good post Tud41

CaveMum · 05/03/2020 02:46

7Days to get a percentage divide the smaller number by the bigger number.

1.0 = 100%
0.1 = 10%
0.01 = 1%
Etc

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 05/03/2020 03:06

I have hardly slept for days ( hence why I am awake at 3am) and I have just found this wonderful thread
I suffer from anxiety and with other things going on in my life - as well as this bloody virus, I am on the edge
Thank you

Keynote1 · 05/03/2020 06:47

I did sleep for a few hours which was better. I just have this thought going round and round that things arent goiing to be the same again, are we going to get back to where we were.

Roussette · 05/03/2020 07:03

I'm all for a positive thread when something like this hits the media.

I do think the Other Threads are revelling in it too much and I think it's detrimental and wrong, especially when someone pops in and is affected by it.

There's some brilliant posts on here, keep the good work up!

The thing is... in the days of salmonella from eggs it was in 1988), there were 65 deaths from it. I bet no one even knows that.
Did we have this mass hysteria then? No. There wasn't twitter and FB and so all the doom and gloom wasn't spread around. This has all been whipped up by the media to sell stories.

Yes, we must all be careful but we must put it in perspective.

Roussette · 05/03/2020 07:05

I just have this thought going round and round that things arent goiing to be the same again, are we going to get back to where we were

Things are going to be exactly the same. Nothing is going to change. Honest. Keynote you can come back, and send me a message berating me if I have that wrong. You won't be sending that message !

The only difference might be a positive. I do think the general population might wash their hands more regularly and that can only be good.

Worryworker · 05/03/2020 07:34

This thread is so brilliant at helping get some perspective. Thank you everyone who had gone out of their way to provide factual, realistic information that’s been so reassuring. What’s people’s thoughts on Italy?? I’m aware they’ve now closed schools etc. we’re due to go to Lake Garda end of May and although I’m still hopeful of going, I’m concerned many tourist attractions may still be closed for precaution. We’re going by train via Paris so at least not got to worry about flying/airports although I know trains can still be a hot bed of germs. I’ll be getting us all to wash hands and use gel ++ on the journey!
