Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

I don’t think NI would go for it either at the moment.
Why would anyone on the island of Ireland want the peace shattered?

Well - It’s a core aspect of Sinn Fein policies

Neverblackcurrant · 09/10/2026 10:01

That they want the peace shattered?

Reunification isn’t happening anytime soon.

No - they want reunification and the end of political partition . That was their initial goal and remains a goal.
I don’t think it will happen because I don’t think the majority want it.

The decision regarding a UI is up to those in NI and ROI as per the GFA.
I’m sure those in GB would support it but that doesn’t make much difference really.

No obviously our opinions unfortunately don't count but just why do unionists want to stay part of the UK? ireland gdpr is great due to their low corporation tax and the US big firms taking advantage of that. They're part of the EU, what's not to like?

I'm genuinely interested in why unionists want to stay. Is it as @opheliaWasntMad says they know ireland don't actually want unification?

I bet I'll be told to start another thread. Better to stick with the free palestine virtue signalling rather than look closer to home maybe.

Because they are UK citizens, feel British and want to stay part of the UK? It's about identity not money.

Why is it unfortunate that your opinions don't count?

Because they identify as British rather than Irish probably.

Ireland would be much closer to reunification if unionists were on board and it could happen peacefully. The fact that it can’t is absolutely huge. There are economic reasons too of course, but if it could be done peacefully things would be very different to the current situation.

Because they do not see themselves as Irish in any way. They burn the Irish flag and effigies of Irish Politicians every July 12th have a look at footage of their bonfires, they despise Ireland and want no part of it. The orange order is an anti catholic movement. They are British and want to stay that way. I don't see them ever accepting a united Ireland in my lifetime which makes me fearful of it because I do not see it as being a peaceful transition.

Just to say, my above paragraph is talking about staunch unionists only, there are plenty of protestants in Northern Ireland who would not share these views.

I agree. It’s not an easy one to solve. Sadly a violent and bigoted minority ruin it for everyone

Ireland Women's soccer team are currenty playing Kazakhstan in a qualifier.
Great game 6-0 at the moment and live on RTE 2
Not a black armband in sight.

Well of course not. The only country that ever does anything wrong is Israel

Did you mean to post this on Craicnet?

Jewishcraic · 09/10/2026 17:21

Recently I seem to hear/read that there will be an united ireland in our lifetime.

Are younger protestants as staunchly Unionist as older ones? If not, then things will change.

Its got to be easier to solve then the Hamas/Israel conflict.

Despite living here over 25 years, I can't really tell the difference between Catholics and Protestants. Maybe once I do they'll give me an Irish passport for free.

It’s easy to tell the difference between a Catholic and a Protestant, just ask them where they keep their toaster 😉

I think this has come up recently, partly because of Brexit and partly because there people with a Catholic background out number those from a Protestant background and there is a new block of people who don’t identify either as nationalists or unionists. It doesn’t mean that people in the Reublic of Ireland are suddenly more nationalist than before.

I think there will be a united ireland in my life time. But there is an awful lot of work to be done.

It’s just ironic ( especially given all the Kneecap rhetoric etc) that while most people in Britain would be happy to say goodbye to NI , it’s the South that doesn’t really want it and will resist it happening.

Edited

What is your obsession with kneecap. They are have zero impact on the political agenda in the Republic of Ireland. They are also popular in the UK and have a fairly large global reach.

The South are not “resisting” it happening. They just have more understanding and care about the peace protest. Most think that peace is more important than the idea of an untied Ireland. The future of the north should only be decided by the people who live there.

Neverblackcurrant · 09/10/2026 21:41

Drumcree march is being banned now.

I think there are financial implications for the south which are a factor. ( And it could be argued that Britain should have a say since they would be better off financially if they were able to hand NI over to the south . But obviously that won’t happen. It’s a bit of an albatross for GB.

OpheliaWasntMad · 09/10/2026 22:03

( Oh - I’m not obsessed with Kneecap. I just think their obsession with the symbols of terrorism - whether IRA / Hamas or Hezbollah does not suggest a desire for peace . )

I don’t think there’s much to be said here. Some of the comments are so removed from reality and are totally insensitive. Respectfully unless you live on the island of Ireland your opinion should be expressed with extra care and sensitivity, avoiding crass statements like “it’s a bit of an albatross for GB”. All I can say to that is GB has been a pretty big albatross for Ireland so no sympathy here for their predicament!

An albatross of their own making …
Thats what an albatross is . They created the problem and now it is their burden to carry . ( It costs more than any other region - it’s a political headache etc )
Thats what the saying means .

Some of you are so very quick to
take offence , it’s tiresome .
