Conflict in the Middle East

Is the green party starting to regret it's association with Islamists?

The green party, ostensibly about climate protection and general progressive values seems to have gotten into bed with Islamist sympathisers and the amount of anti semitism and basic hatred of their own country is now obvious.

The green party now at least locally are known as a party that has sympathies towards all manner of Islamist causes including Hamas's objective to wipe Israel of the face of the Earth.

Wouldn't be surprised if they produce a motion declaring climate change a Jewish conspiracy........

Maybe because the IRA didn’t attack Glastonbury, rape, kidnap and murder hundreds of concertgoers? Or break into dozens of Protestant homes in loyalist areas and do much the same?

The IRA attacked what it defined as legitimate targets - you can disagree with their definition but that’s still very different from randomly targeting a concert to murder as many people as possible.

In fact if they had attacked Glastonbury - and promised to do it again and again, I can guarantee you there would have been the expectation that the British Army be a LOT more proactive in stopping them. And rightly so.

And if crowds of nationalist civilians had come out into the streets of Derry and west Belfast to celebrate the attack and to spit on the hostages being paraded on trucks, I think the British population would have DEMANDED that the army go into those areas in force to get the people responsible.

And I’m from a nationalist community in Northern Ireland - and even I can see that those are not tactics that the IRA tended to use. Not because the IRA were nice people, but because they are actions that the nationalist community would not have supported.

Unlike Gaza, where children literally sang and danced as the bodies of murdered Israeli babies were handed to the Red Cross.

Edited

Yes . The IRA were terrorist thugs but they didn’t kidnap and murder babies . They didn’t rape festival goers etc

Israel has always intended to clear out the Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank one way or the other. October 7th gave them the green light in the eyes of their supporters. If Oct 7th hadn't happened, they would have eventually found another reason to do it. The intention was to drive them into the Sinai but Egypt put paid to that idea. They're now desperately looking for somewhere else to take them but unfortunately for Israel, it seems no one is willing to play ball, yet. Until such a time, Israel will keep up the pressure by corralling them into an ever shrinking area while keeping them in wretched living conditions until some country relents.

But we’ve already seen that you misinterpret and misrepresent quotes that we call see in front of us - why on earth would anyone believe your speculation about what Israel (a hive mind?) has “always” intended to do? You’re not honest about this.

But FWIW, if it were true that Oct 7th “gave then that excuse”, then, no.1, that was pretty damn stupid of Hamas to give them that excuse, for no possible military gain, and no.2, Israel must be terrible at genocide, considering they could have just bombed the place to smithereens in the days after Oct 7th and before there was any question of getting people out.

Oh and no.3, the idea that Egypt spent years and huge amounts of money building a MASSIVE barrier between Gaza and the Sinai to keep Gazans in Gaza for their own sake, rather than because they don’t want them in Egypt … is laughable.

The Egyptians don’t trust Palestinians not to destabilise Egypt same as they did in Lebanon and Jordan. That’s why they built that wall.

Not on the off chance that Israel would launch an all-out attack on Gaza 🙄

And here’s why: every time innocent civilians, including Protestant ones in NI, or English one in England, and most especially children, were hurt, there was ALWAYS outrage in the nationalist community that this was being done “in our name” so to speak. It was NEVER accepted by ordinary people, much less celebrated in the way Oct 7th was.

You’d be hard pressed to find a NI nationalist to defend the Kingsmill murders which were nakedly sectarian, and even actual IRA supporters only “defend” it as an attempt at preventing equally blatant sectarian murders of catholics by responding to like-for-like killings (which TBF is not untrue - loyalists used that tactic a lot more than the IRA did)

And even the most convinced IRA supporters would always have said that the Enniskillen bombs were a mistake, as were the deaths of the two boys in Warrington. Of course, in reality, that’s a reaction to the revulsion those killings created in the community they relied on for their existence. If people had reacted as Palestinians seem to, that could well have become a long term tactic.

Anyway, this is all a bit off topic, but the claim that Irish people should see ourselves in the murderers and rapists of Hamas makes me so angry. It’s such nonsense for those of us who lived through the troubles at the time, rather than reading a fictionalised version of them.

Yup. I think that is exactly what happened. At no point did I deny they attacked civilians which makes them terrorists in my eye. An undeniable atrocity. Whether Hamas leaders did or didn't give instructions not to attack civilians is irrelevant. They did. What we don't know however is how many of the victims were as a result of the Hannibal directive which Yoav Gallant admitted was used.

Ah, I see, it’s time to drag out the Hannibal Directive. If everything else fails…

Out of the 1,200+ people slaughtered on that day, exactly how many of them do you think were killed by the Hannibal Directive? Because from what I read, investigators put the figure at 14 people.

Hamas fighters and the Gazans who joined them literally filmed themselves executing families in their beds, hunting down terrified kids in the fields at the Nova festival and throwing grenades into civilian bomb shelters.

But sure, try and shift the blame onto the chaotic, desperate response of the Israeli army.

Apparently it's Mavet la Avraim. I've never heard or heard of it, it's just as hateful as the original words to From the river to the sea. Which I have heard many many times chanted by people ignorant of its origins.
Bit of barrel scraping there.
The Hebrew means "Death to Arabs" and as I say it's never been on my radar.
The original Arabic is "Palestine will be Arab" which is a pretty clear genocidal message and it's a mainstream chant beloved of white British bandwagon jumpers.
Obviously terrorists on both sides are going to wish death on the other side.
It's the person in the street I'm concerned about.

It's probably never been on your radar because as you said, you don't speak Hebrew. Now you know, watch any Israeli parades like Jerusalem day or listen to Israeli sports fans. There's even videos of Israeli tourists chanting it. Another one you will frequently hear is 'She yisaref lachem ha kfar' or 'May your villages burn' in English. But hey 'Palestine will be free' is a call for genocide. Go figure.

Egypt reinforced the border in February 24 because they knew, like almost anyone in the world with eyes, what Israel intended to do with the Palestinians.

I guess we will never actually know. Israel are famously good liars and keep doubling down on a lie until it is irrefutably proven to be a lie and then try to make up an excuse.

inamarina · 17/10/2026 12:58

Emilesgran · 17/10/2026 10:19

That doesn’t actually change the fact that if Hamas had not attacked on Oct 7th, with no achievable military aim (so does not qualify as war/self defence or anything of that sort in law), not only would there have been zero deaths of Israeli citizens whether by friendly fire or not, but the IDF would not have entered Gaza, there would be no widespread destruction there, no Gazans living in tents, no hospitals out of action, no “yellow line”, etc etc.

IOW the damage done to Gaza and Gazans is ALL down to Hamas’ desire to murder and terrorise Israeli civilians.

And since you can’t tell us what action Israel should have taken in response to that attack, it seems you believe that Israel, unlike any other country in the world, should just stand by and let its civilians be raped, kidnapped or murdered. Because its army is more powerful than the military force attacking its civilians!

That’s not a reasonable thing to expect of a country.

Edited

Exactly.

So why didn't they do it then?
Israel could have reduced Gaza - with its population - to cinders within days, but they chose not to. It seems illogical to say "anyone with eyes" can see they're trying to commit genocide - but that they didn't dare just bomb the place after Oct 7th which would have been an ideal time.

You keep shifting the goalposts.
The IRA analogy didn’t work, so now you are resorting to the ‘Israel has always wanted to get rid of all the Gazans’ hyperbole.

Do Hamas and the other Palestinians who choose to attack Israel bear any responsibility for the consequences of their actions at all?

Israel's support from Western governments is almost totally unconditional but even for them that would be step too far. The bullshit when Israel says they warned the civilians to get out of the way or the human shields story is just enough for the bought and paid for governments to be able to justify it.

Absolutely. The Hamas leaders, in Gaza, made a huge mistake. They thought that having the hostages would stop Israel from attacking and force them to the negotiating table.

No, you did insinuate that the numbers killed by the Hannibal Directive are higher than the reported 14.

Otherwise, there is no point in speculating about what the 'real' numbers might be, given how clearly documented it is who was doing the vast majority of the killing on that day.

Hamas also lie, but even they didn’t try to hide what they did on October 7th. On the contrary, they and their helpers were filming themselves because they wanted the world to see it.

There is really no point in trying to re-direct the blame to Israel.

As I said no one knows the numbers other than the IDF. All I know is they are liars. You can do a lot more damage with a 30mm cannon mounted under an Apache helicopter than you can with small arms and the pictures of the burned out cars looked very suspicious.
