“Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wore a noose pin on his lapel to signal his support for the bill”

I first heard about this on Facebook and thought it might be anti-Israel fake news. But no, it’s true.

Absolutely horrifying and sickening.

Itamar Ben-Gvir wearing a black suit, red tie and white kippah, talking on a podium in front of Israeli flags

Palestinians convicted of lethal attacks face death penalty under new Israeli law

The new law, passed on Monday, was pushed hard by the far-right and Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

The new law is to be used in the military courts which are only for Palestinians. Jewish defendants are in civilian courts where this law will not apply. HTH.

'The law, passed by Israel's parliament on Monday and fulfilling a pledge by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right allies, also gives Israeli courts the option of imposing the death penalty on Israeli citizens convicted on similar charges'

Many were combatants and as been said repeatedly on these threads hamas hide among/are accepted and encouraged in the community so therefore civilian casualties are sadly unavoidable.

No one has 'done a genocide' as we see bleated all over sm. They've got rid of thousands of combatants and if they use the death penalty on those captured well, as said, many other ME countries do exactly the same.

"Many were combatants"

Of the 80,000 approx how many? not from the IDF but from independent sources....

The only people who say Hamas or in Hezbollah hide in amongst civilians are the Israelis, who have a very wide definition of who "Hamas" is....

Could be a news journalist, a farmer who was in paid employment but left Hamas a year ago, so they bombed all his cousins and aunts... maybe a hospital where an injured Hamas terrorist is being treated, so in the IFD's eyes, that justifies the total destruction of that wing of the hospital, inc the maternity unit next door.

But i've a feeling we wont agree...

Israel has always been an apartheid state. It’s what the founding of the Jewish state is based on.

The difference is that nowadays they don’t even try to pretend that they are not.

I know this is not the subject of the thread, but I'm always puzzled by this: do you consider that any country with an official state religion to be an aprtheid state? Because by that measure nearly all muslim majority countries are also apartheid state yet the outcry against them seems to be a lot more muted.

I am positive they do not. The ICJ legal opinion that Israel is practicing apartheid is not based on there being an official state religion.

But that's not the same allegation as the poster's, which was that Israel has always been an apartheid state, by the very nature of its founding documents.

So by that measure, so is Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Algeria, Egypt Jordan, Kuwait etc etc - and of course Palestine, since Article 4 of the Basic Law of the State of Palestine says "Islam is the official religion in Palestine."

And most of those other countries base their legal system on islamic law, and generally punish proselytism or atheism, sometimes severely.

From a constitutional point of view, Judaism is not actually the state religion in Israel.

The charge would have to be terrorism with intent to erase the state of Israel.
Terrorism to stop any Palestinian state that’s not covered by the law.
Terrorism to annex parts of Lebanon and Syria, not a problem.
Terrorism to ethnically cleanse Palestinians or Arab Israelis that’s ok too.

This law is custom worded to only apply to terrorism by Palestinians.

You didn’t read the ICJ ruling did you? They quite clearly say from its founding it has been an apartheid state.

Saudi Arabia are a strong ally of the UK. We collaborate with them on defence, trade, energy etc. They also have major issues with misuse of the death penalty, particularly discriminatory use against Shi'a muslims. In fact it is well known that shias suffer systematic discrimination in Saudi. Interestingly, we don't hear a lot from 'anti-Saudis' that it is an apartheid state or that it is disgusting.

So while I agree that this is a horrible and important issue, I am also interested in how selective it seems to be. It can't be just chance that all the threads on the 'middle east' board just happen to be about Israel, with 90% being anti-Israel.

Yes fair point well made, I had noticed that.
Selective lefty outrage it seems.

Well then, my question applies to the ICJ ruling too (it wasn't clear from your post which only mentioned what's happening now): in what way was the foundation of Israel "apartheid" in a way that the foundation of Pakistan or Saudi Arabia is not?

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 03/04/2026 19:31

TopPocketFind · 03/04/2026 11:45

Because we expect Israel to be better than their neighbours?

Or that used to be the case.

I guess the 7th October put paid to that.

I imagine it is because of the right of the Jewish diaspora to live there, which does not apply to others even if their ancestors may once have lived in the place that is now Israel. To call this 'apartheid' is such a stretch as to appear entirely cynical in my view.

It's similar to calling the partition of India and Pakistan apartheid.

IrishSelkie · 03/04/2026 19:06

Also, despite the fact that it is over 30 pages, and therefore it's a bit of a cheek from you to expect me to read the whole thing on your say-so, I now have looked through it, and no "they" don't clearly say that at all.

Because the overall conclusion doesn't say it. It's also only an advisory opinion, not a legally binding ruling, but that's a separate issue.

Some of the judges made their own additional and in some cases dissenting reports, and some of those do mention the word apartheid - but in some cases it's to say that Israel did NOT commit apartheid, and in others to say they did. But none of those are the actual ruling anyway.

So tell us: had you not read the document you were expecting me to have read, or had you read it and just decided to lie?

If a Jewish Israeli committed treason against the state of Israel, would he be exempt from the death penalty because he was Jewish?

Simplestars · 03/04/2026 21:56

Their time will come where they will be accountable for the attrocities in Palestine.

No, same for Israelis in courts in Israel as for palestinians in military courts in the West Bank. Granted we don't see israeli suicide bombers and terrorists but in theory the same penalty applies.

What atrocities, or do you mean the military retaliation for the actual atrocities committed on Oct 7th?

Extraordinary. You are either totally uninformed or you are not posting in good faith. Either way, I’m not sure what you think you are achieving by denying what’s actually going on but you are really not helping your cause.

Maybe you think rape and torture of prisoners and forced starvation of civilians are “military retaliation”.

Revenge for October 7th isn't military retaliation at all.

Israel now doing similar in Lebanon, ethnic cleansing, mass killings of civilians, inc targeting journalists and medical staff, IDF now openly say what they are doing.
"Blew up a car carrying 3 people because 1 of the 3 may have been involved (in a journalistic capacity) with Hezbollah" IDF spokesman said.

Blew up a family of 4 girls and their mother because the son of a former Hezbollah employee was also in the house.
Mother and 8yo killed, the remaining 3 sisters suffering life changing injuries, inc loss of sight, burns and amputation, the boy escaped serious injury but doubtless IDF will blow up the hospital he is in....

If only we had words for people who do things like this.

CanAnybodyFindMe · 04/04/2026 09:44

And all this “it’s not a law just for Palestinians, it will be for Israeli Jews too” nonsense. Unconvincing. I don’t believe any one believes this. In the unlikely event anyone does genuinely believe it, I suggest looking up some videos of Ben-Gvir walking around prisons (of Palestinians) talking about how he’s planning to use the law (on Palestinians).

Israeli Jews who murder Palestinians don’t even get convicted. If they did the law would not cover this anyway as admitted even by supporters. But yeah, “it’s not a racist apartheid law”. Give over, no-one believes you believe this. You just believe it is acceptable to have a racist, apartheid law.

The law is there is there nonetheless so it isn't 'just for palestinians'.

We should be outraged at the death penalty worldwide. Why are you only bothered when it's israel? Do you know Saudi Arabia do it all the time.

What do you mean 'we don't see Israeli suicide bombers and terrorists'? You might not see Israeli terrorists but Palestinians certainly do. Jewish terrorism is a massive issue right now so much so that a former pm of Israel has asked the ICC to take action against them to save the Palestinians and Israel from Israeli terrorists. If you think that the actions of these Israeli terrorists committing pogroms and attempting to ethnically cleanse the West Bank aren't harming the state of Israel then you are in dreamland.

Bluegreenbird · 04/04/2026 10:14

I also don’t see why this proposal from Israel has got so many people raging when the Islamist countries can and do far worse. All the time.
I don’t agree with it. Luckily Israelis will be able to debate it and vote. Unlike the beleaguered citizens of many other countries in the region.
I’m not religious and despair at the destruction caused by all these medieval minded and hate filled people on both sides but I am always struck by the double standards and hypocrisy of the Islamists.

So do you think that a Jew who commits a terror attack against Israel will be exempted from this capital punishment law because he's Jewish? Or is it a law to protect Israel, just like, say, Saudi Arabia executes people for treason against the Saudi state but not against their neighbours?
