Whatever your views are politically I believe this is good.

I appreciate many support their cause but really what effect would young people starving themselves in the UK have on the Israeli government, Hamas or the end to suffering in Gaza?

Wow. You haven’t even read the reasons they went on hunger strike have you?

BewaretheIckabog · 14/01/2026 21:57

I’ve read all their demands on the Government and much from their supporters and talked to many who support them.

I may not agree with a great deal they say but ending their hunger strike is a good thing. Those baying them on to become martyrs for a cause are disgusting.

I am pleased they will not further risk their health.

Granting their demands would not have affected the Israeli government or Gaza.

It is quite chilling really that a hunger strike to demand you are granted bail as is your right as you don’t meet the criteria for bail denial, that arms shipments stop in accordance with UN direction and that the unreasonable and politically engineered delay to your trial beyond the 180day limit be brought to an end was completely ignored by our government.

These are political prisoners. This kind of detention without trial is what countries like Iran and China do. It’s an erosion of our civil rights.

Yes, I am glad they are ending their strikes because their deaths would be truly tragic. But I would not be so flippant about “martyrs for the cause” when the cause are their demands and those were 100% reasonable requests that English law and international law on our civil rights and on arms sales be followed.

Political prisoners? They broke the law. Should people be allowed to break into wherever they want and not be arrested if they're doing it for a cause?

And then blackmail the government by going on hungerstrike! Its bs. They made a series of choices for which they are entirely responsible.

SharonEllis · 14/01/2026 23:15

What a sick suggestion that this situation bears any resemblance to Iran where completely innocent people are imprisoned without charge, tortured, murdered, and at the moment being gunned down in the streets.

BewaretheIckabog · 14/01/2026 23:39

I’m delighted that these pro Palestinian activists are not going to die - the first response was to attack me and insult me and it wasn’t zionists laying into me.
I’m genuinely pleased they’ve stopped their hunger strike - for their own safety.

Political prisoners? They were part of the group that attacked a police woman on the ground with a sledgehammer breaking her back.

Yes I'm glad that they stopped their hunger strike but they are not political prisoners but simply violent thugs.

halfpastten · 15/01/2026 01:25

Amazing she survived. Although she may be able to get into the Guiness book of records for the longest hunger strike. Fancy that.

Perhaps you are not familiar with the English justice system, but they have not been convicted of anything.

However, being remanded in custody without a trial date for more than a year is extremely unusual and against the principles of natural justice.

Its not that unusual at the moment. There is a huge courts backlog and the average wait is about a year (average means some will be more, some less). Those on remand for serious offences are typically treated more harshly.

mids2019 · 15/01/2026 06:38

Well that little bit of virtue signalling and attempts to avoid justice and due process failed. Didn't impact the news greatly and I doubt many in the UK knew who they were. Saved cash in prison food I guess.

Maybe they can start another against the Iranian reginme?

Fuck about and find out. That’s the risk you take when you “allegedly “ break the law. That the justice system is overloaded and it takes ages to get to court.

Many, many people spend years on remand waiting for trial. Were we saying Lucy Letby should have been let out before her trial?

It’s believed they’re at risk of reoffending. I did read about one of them before and this isn’t the first time she’s been arrested iirc. Plus they’re deemed a flight risk, wasn’t one of the group allowed out for a wedding/funeral and is now on the run?

Personally I think they should have done it properly and saved the state the cost of a trial! They weren’t even hunger striking properly. It’s all publicity and victim mentality bollocks.

mids2019 · 15/01/2026 07:06

Think of the cost to the NHS in terms of hospital bed time. I can think of better ways to spend tax payers cash.

Not 'extremely unusual' - in 2022 there were well over 1000 on remand for over a year.

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2026 07:36

Good news, I am relieved. I was really worried that the likes of Zarah Sultana and the idiots hanging around outside the prisons yelling their support for these young people to continue not eating were backing them into a corner where they felt they had to die for 'the cause'.

Perhaps now Sultana can shut up with her repeated idiotic and dangerous demand that all remand prisoners should be freed immediately.

Sure.

I’m just surprised you aren’t referring to them as “hostages” tbh, such is the blatant disregard for the meaning of words on this board.

About one in twenty of people on remand have been so for over two years. Are they all political prisoners too?

QuestioningThisNow · 15/01/2026 11:24

Glad they are no longer on hunger strike. They will get their day in court and can argue their case there. If everyone on remand demanded the same and got it, it would be chaos.

NellieJean · 15/01/2026 11:27

I love the way they are claiming some sort of victory as a cover for stopping. I’m glad they have, nobody should die just because they are delusional.

Any other person arrested for vandalism/ property damage of government property would have been granted bail and been in front of a judge within the 180day limit. Very rarely does vandalism result in a custodial sentence- as in time in prison.

The fact they have been denied bail and are being kept in prison on remand (not convicted of any crime) for more than the 180day limit with their trials now being pushed off to 2027 means they will all have served at least 2 years in prison without ever standing trial or being convicted of a crime.

The reason for imprisoning them for at least 2 years after arrest with no trial or conviction of a crime is purely politically driven.

Not 'extremely unusual' - in 2022 there were well over 1000 on remand for over a year.

But not for political reasons. Usually it is because of complex cases where expert witnesses are needed to examine evidence.
