“Israel’s war in Gaza has led to a 41% fall in births in the territory and high numbers of maternal deaths, miscarriages, newborn mortality and premature births, two reports on the impact of the conflict on pregnant women, babies and maternity care reveal.
Two reports by Physicians for Human Rights, in collaboration with the Global Human Rights Clinic at the University of Chicago Law School, and Physicians for Human Rights–Israel (PHRI) document how the war has led to high figures for maternal and neonatal mortality and forced births in dangerous conditions and systematically dismantled health services – consequences of “a deliberate intention of preventing births among Palestinians, meeting the legal criteria of the genocide convention,” researchers said.

Hear hear. The lack of historical insight and sociological imagination on this board is absolutely staggering. It's no good, though. People see right through it and I think all but the hardcore are moving on. The student omnicausers are already getting bored.

"student omnicausers" nice ad-hominem there. when you can't address the argument with facts or logic, it's easier to resort to belittling the people debating you instead, isn't it?

In further relevant reporting today:

”Newborn baby becomes eighth to die of hypothermia in Gaza this winter
Despite the ceasefire, more than 100 children have died in the territory since October

A 27-day-old baby died in Gaza on Saturday from severe cold, bringing the number of children in the region who have died of hypothermia since the start of the current winter season to eight, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
Medical sources confirmed to the news agency Anadolu that the newborn, named Aisha Ayesh al-Agha, died as a result of freezing temperatures, and that when she was brought to Nasser hospital in Khan Younis it was already too late to save her.
No further details were revealed about the infant’s condition prior to her death.

Two recent reports by Physicians for Human Rights, in collaboration with the Global Human Rights Clinic at the University of Chicago Law School and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, document how the war has led to high figures for maternal and neonatal mortality.

The document reports “2,600 miscarriages, 220 pregnancy-related deaths, 1,460 premature births, over 1,700 underweight newborns and over 2,500 infants requiring neonatal intensive care” between January and June 2025.

Mothers in Gaza are forced into unthinkable choices, routinely compromising their own health and survival to meet their children’s most basic needs. With maternal and newborn care dismantled by fuel shortages, blocked medical supplies, mass displacement and relentless bombardment, relocating to overcrowded tent encampments has become the only remaining option.

There is very little in the way of facts and logic on this board. I’ve already addressed the implausibility of the blood libel of Israel preventing baby formula from getting into Gaza while 60,000+ babies have been born to allegedly starving mothers and have obviously survived. Babies would have succumbed to malnutrition within days and you’d expect to see thousands of infant deaths. Thankfully this hasn’t happened and it’s not because Palestinian babies are especially hardy. Israel starving tiny babies by withholding formula is just another lie to keep the ‘Israel are committing genocide’ propaganda machine going now the famine lie has been debunked and that’s gone quiet. The lies to paint Israel as the baddie have been transparent since the beginning of this war so don’t complain when they called out on.

Jeez. Nice victim blaming. the inhumanity of this response. Imagine you had no home and were living in a tent in winter with a newborn, your whole city destroyed. Disgusting.

Just wow. I think I will trust the high journalistic standards of the Guardian and the legitimate organisations making these reports over this. (Cue attacks on these organisations trying to delegitimise them and smear them, I know, seen it so many times before, coming in 1,2,3.... yawn). The brainwashing is real.

I thought this thread was going to be about the reproductive enslavement of all the women in Afghanistan. Not the natural consequence of war. I very much doubt the Ukraine has a booming birth rate right now either. War is a dreadful thing for so many reasons. But when the violence is happening in peace time and is ‘just the way it is’ that seems so much more disturbing and dangerous to me.

You haven't addressed it. You made up some points and ignored all the actual facts.
Israel are commiting genocide according to the UN and many respected bodies
The famine lie has not been debunked there was a famine and it has been downgraded due to the ceasefire.

Using the phrase blood libel is weaponising antisemitism to shut down a valid discussion on the actions of a country and it's government.

Why do you care so much that Israel are not doing it?

Brainwashing indeed.
The Physicians for Human Rights are liars?
Every report written and every piece of footage filmed of the vast quantities of aid deliberately wasted and withheld in warehouses is fake?
The multiple letters and statements published by more than 100 humanitarian organisations, including Oxfam and MSF denouncing the ‘weaponisation of aid’ are lies to make Israel look like baddies?

I find it difficult to believe that anyone could be so desperately in denial. It feels wilful tbh, specially given the hateful content of that deleted post,

No one is worried about the birth rate they are far more concerned about the wilful obstruction of equipment and services from pregnant women and newborns by Israel.

You can start a thread on Afghanistan, it is also a scary issue fortunately not many people actually support it (unlike Israels actions)

Yes the fact that Israel is continuing withholding aid and banning aid organisations during a ceasefire is deeply disturbing

Are you seriously comparing Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East with the Islamic Republic, one of the most barbaric regimes in the world?

Quite. Of course Hamas and their Islamic terrorists chums across their huge nations are renowned for their commitment and support for their women and children, after all these men do ‘own’ them. Israel’s democratic values of course are repugnant and cruel.

Both can be true you do know that it's not an either or situation. Hamas are bastards and Israel are cruel.

And the losers are women and babies.

mids2019 · 18/01/2026 14:44

58 000 babies are born prematurely in the UK every year. Approximately 5000 per month.

250 000 miscarriages occur in the UK every year. Around 20 000 per year.I

Around 300 women does annually in the UK in childbirth.

How come we have worse maternity statistics than Gaza when not in a war zone??? Or is it simply that journalists and rights groups are scraping up statistics without critical of statistical thought to shock the impressionable into more hatred of Israel?🤷

Significantly larger population?
69.3 million vs approx 2 million in Gaza
220 pregnancy related deaths in Gaza vs 330 in whole of Uk show’s how bad situation is

Israel standing up to Islamic terrorism is an anomaly in this world. The atrocities are undeniable however insinuating the government of Gaza are somehow not responsible for their own people is extraordinary.

Mistyglade · 18/01/2026 16:08

Hamas are very well comfortable with their little princelings settled in UAE or Qatar with the billions they were given to create their new land. They knowingly left their own people to rot in full view of the curated media for us to support their evil endeavours. How this bypasses your cross examination of the political spectrum is beyond me. I’d hate for the wool to be pulled over your eyes. Oh no, when it’s the Jews fighting back it’s suddenly something else.

BelleHathor · 18/01/2026 16:27

Unfortunately for those engaged in committing the crimes against humanity on Palestinians in Gaza "look, what Hamas made me do." Or "We were just following orders" are not valid defences.

Crimes like this will be tried in actual courts in the future. The verdict in the court of public opinion has already been delivered, hence the constant deflection and name-calling.

You are having a laugh. Israel are not standing up to Islamic terrorists they just want the land. (Christian churches targeted??)How unbelievably naive.

If the government were responsible for the citizens they would be able to override Israel stopping maternity aid/doctors /formula and controlling the borders instead of the Occupying Power having that control.

They want the land? They would be able to override Israeli forces controlling borders? You’ve been brain washed.

Hamas could have used the billions of dollars since 2006 to build up Gaza. They built a tunnel network bigger than the London underground. They want the death of their own citizens in order to get world opinion turned against Israel.

Clinton tried to give the Palestinians a state in a deal they turned down which would have given them all of Gaza and 97% of the West Bank, you name it. They turned it all down, they don’t want peace.

So, your media tells us October 7th didn't happen because Palestinians were denied a state.... it happened BECAUSE they were given one.
Gaza was theirs. No occupation. No settlers. No Jews at all.
Just them, ruling themselves. And what did they do? They began preparing for war.

Back to the topic in hand, Hamas are preparing to follow Iraq in legalised child marriage where tens of thousands of girls, including those under 10, are being sold by their Muslim fathers to rich Arab men, some as old as 70.

Under Islam, daughters are not just property but a burden on families and a source of shame.

Martymcfly24 · 18/01/2026 17:49

Gaza was theirs. No occupation.

At this point debate is irrelevant if that is what you think .
