Yes. Middle East is the region and it’s a lot bigger than just Gaza. On another note, I find it quite strange you say that Iran supports drug cartels. For all their faults, they are strictly Islamic. Even the Taliban stopped the poppy trade in Afghanistan for that reason.

Torture and extra judicial disappearances are islamic?

I don’t think it is but then again I don’t think any religion advocates it. Happens though.

It certainly does which is just another reason why the clerics need to go. This is really fucking weird. It seems I’m being attacked as if I support this regime. I have said time and again, they need to go but not be replaced by some puppet dictator. It needs to be an honest democracy for the Iranian people. I suspect there are posters on here who don’t like that though.

SharonEllis · 19/01/2026 17:08

You said Quantum saying it was strange (implying you didnt believe her) not that it was strange that one of the biggest criminal outfits in the world might be in some way linked to the drugs trade.

You just do equivocate a lot and use the language of people that equivocate. The issue is a lot lot more than just 'the clerics need to go'. Noone here is advocating for a puppet dictator so it seems a bit of a straw man.

I wasn’t implying anything of the sort. As I pointed out, the Taliban, who are extremist Muslims, would not benefit from the drugs trade even though the money would be very useful, I find it strange that another extremist Muslim group would. I admit I may be wrong. I just find it surprising.

SharonEllis · 19/01/2026 17:16

Nothing the Iranian regimes does surprises me. I trust that a lot of the other awful things they do are inconsistent with Islam also.

Exactly how am I equivocating. I’ve been quite specific. Is there any other way you would like me to say the clerics need to go.

SharonEllis · 19/01/2026 17:35

Its a lot more than clerics being booted out though isnt it? Its a whole brutal state apparatus.

I thought it was the supreme leader and the clerics around him who have control over the parliament that was the issue. Please enlighten me.

SharonEllis · 19/01/2026 17:47

The IRGC? For a start? It was almost certainly them, not the Supreme Leader who ordered the internet shutdown. They have huge economic as well as military and political power.

So you think the republican guard operate independently from the council of guardians. Are you saying that we just need to get rid of them and not the clerics?

They all need to be got rid of.

Where did I say that? Are you deliberately misunderstanding people? Noone has said anything complicated but there seems to be a big gap in understanding.

No. I would like to see a peaceful transition of power a bit like the Glorious Revolution. You seem to want to see something like the French revolution and all the suffering that ensued from that.

Ok Im done. Nobody would logically derive that from anything I've said. Especially as I have dear friends who know people who are there.

We’d all love to see a peaceful transition of power. How likely do you think that is to happen?

I'm really curious about why you've chosen the 'Glorious' Revolution as an example? That was the leader of a foreign power (Netherlands) who tried to undermine the head of State (James II) by publishing open letter, then invaded at the request of Parliament and installed a puppet head of state (his wife Mary) while taking power himself. So which foreign power do you want to intervene in Iran?

I'm not sure I would agree with that interpretation of the Glorious Rev (or that Mary was a puppet), but the idea that 1680s England was in any way comparable to the Islamic Republic is historically illiterate so I totally agree that the Glorious Rev is an irrelevant precedent.

Starch1e · 19/01/2026 20:47

I am being a bit mean to Mary Grin
She always seems happy to fade into background and allow William to do the ruling - unlike Anne who kept her husband in his place.
Anyway, enough derail from me.

I do to but I think it will take more than a truly democratic Iran to bring peace and stability throughout the region.

It would be a good start if they stop funding Hezbollah, The houthis, Hamas and various others.

Edited

That would be an excellent start.

Economic sanctions not just from the US but from all countries that don’t actively support Hamas, Hezbollah & the Houthis would be a good idea.

Would be hard for the poor people living in Iran but an economic crisis even bigger than what we see now may be what is needed to topple the regime once & for all.
