Because he was wearing a Star of David necklace.

Arrested by Met Police. Handcuffed and held for 10 hours.

Excepts of interview in link.

Along with the banning of (predominantly Jewish obviously) supporters of an Israeli football team from attending a game in Birmingham, this is showing a trend that is starting to be reminiscent of 30s Nazi Germany.

I can't believe what I've just watched. A Jewish lawyer wearing a Star of David was arrested after the police alleged the symbol had "antagonised" pro-Palestine protesters. He was handcuffed and detained by police for almost TEN hours. DISGUSTING! S...

Being ‘openly Jewish’ has been an accusation for others, thinking of Gideon Falter.

Falter experienced this antisemitic surge first-hand when, after attending synagogue on Saturday, April 13, he wandered with friends through central London wearing his kippa, the traditional Jewish skullcap. He was stopped by a police officer who warned him that, because of an anti-Israel protest, he could prompt a “reaction.” A video released by the Campaign Against Antisemitism, or CAA, shows the officer telling Falter he was “quite openly Jewish” due to his head covering.

So the police believe a single visibly Jewish man getting too close to hundreds of pro-Palestinians in a public space was inflaming tensions?

What does that say and why are they allowing these protests which restrict the free movement of Jewish people in a public space and risk their safety, even arresting them for the risk the police are putting them in by allowing these protests?

Mate the point is whooshing over your head. Protesters and counter protesters are always kept apart for the purpose of safety. This is how they keep everyone safe. If they let one counter protester over from one side then they have to let one from another. Then if they let one they have to let 2 etc. The rules are there for a reason and no one is above them.

BewaretheIckabog · 18/10/2025 23:30

Fine to keep protestors and counter protesters apart but if someone wants to wear a kippah or Star of David but wanrs nothing to do with the protests are they allowed to move freely or are they to be excluded from certain areas for fear of offence?

He was a single man who was part of the counter protest group who was clearly acting like a bit of a prick to the point it was a public safety issue .

The hyperbole from your second paragraph is unnecessary in this incident. You can save the indignation for another time.

spoonbillstretford · 19/10/2025 04:30

Someimes people are arrested for their own safety/public order/safety of others.

Twiglets1 · 19/10/2025 06:27

BewaretheIckabog · 18/10/2025 22:22

If he was arrested for public order concerns the police are entitled to interview him about that and any alleged breaches.

Why are they interrogating him about his choice of jewellery?

I’m not Jewish but antisemitism in the UK is now terrifying. The Jew haters have become emboldened by the agitators chanting ‘From the river to the sea’ and ‘there is only one solution, intifada revolution’. We all know where the significance of the use of the word ‘solution’.

I’m not a supporter of the Israeli government or Netanyahu.

However, I do not want to see Israel ‘dismantled’ and believe in its right to exist. That makes me a Zionist.

So yes people are calling for my death too.

I have it easy but I would not want to be Jewish in the UK. My heart goes out to them.

I agree and would not want to be Jewish in the UK right now too.

Hope the pro Pal protesters are happy now they have bought civil unrest to the UK and a rise in antisemitic behaviour & attitudes. Whatever you think of the actions of the Israel government, the protests have allowed a load of racists to have a voice in the UK (not saying that everyone who attends these protests is racist but they are aligning themselves with a lot of people with more sinister motives as proven by some of the chants inciting violence against Jews).

Still, the man is a “Jewish lawyer” so with a bit of luck he will be taking legal proceedings against them.

Come on … you don’t object to the hyperbole that Palestinian supporters use on other threads so why suddenly become sensitive to it now?

Puppalicious · 19/10/2025 07:02

As I read the police statement, its saying it was another Jewish group that he was antagonising. Which surely makes it less likely that it was the Star of David that was the problem?

I don't really just struck by the hypocrisy of you complaining about hyperbole after some of the things I've seen written by the more extreme pro Pals on MN. You are not one of those but you don't ever question them on their language.

It’s the same guy isn’t it? Antagonising a Jewish pro-Palestine group this time.

He does seem to end up in the wrong lace at the wrong time rather a lot doesn’t he? Almost like he is intentionally trying to get himself arrested.

He wasn't trying to get himself arrested, he was monitoring the event for unlawful behaviour by the protesters (which is often denied so photographic proof is needed to counter the denials).

The lawyer claims he has recorded up to 30 incidents of criminal behaviour by pro-Palestine protesters but insists not a single one has led to a conviction. He claims to have been personally abused on a number of occasions, including being called a “Zionist baby killer”.

“This is one of the clearest examples of two-tier policing you will ever see,” he said, “Police are arguing that wearing a Star of David is antagonising to protesters while we have seen all manner of anti-Semitic slogans on placards and shouted at Jews that have gone unpunished.”

The demonstration in August was also attended by Gill Levy, a fellow legal observer and former sergeant who served with the Metropolitan Police for 20 years, who was appalled by the arrest.

He said: “It is really shocking. I cannot see how this was proportionate or justified. It makes me distraught.”

Mr Levy added: “How do we get back to the point where police are protecting us [Jews] properly rather than targeting us? When I was an officer I was always thinking about the reputation of the police, and how I could ensure what I was doing did not expose the organisation to risk. This arrest beggars belief. I am part of this Jewish tribe, but I am also part of the police tribe, and for them to have let me down like this is heart-breaking.”

TicklishMauveSquid · 18/10/2025 22:22

Behaviour?

He got too close to the pro-Pals.

According to the police report, deliberately, repeatedly, aggressively and after repeated warnings not to. Of course he got arrested, as would anyone who’d done the same thing from the other side.

NellieElephantine · 18/10/2025 21:29

So by existing he's guilty?

Appears so. Walking around with his Jewishness showing seems to be a crime

RhododendronFlowers · 19/10/2025 09:22

BewaretheIckabog · 18/10/2025 22:38

Because antisemitism is now ok and being visibly Jewish is provocative.

We’re not allowed to blame ordinary Palestinians for the actions of Hamas but all Jews worldwide are apparently fair game for everything that happens in Gaza and the West Bank.

This. Oh my god, it's appalling.

When I think about the very aggressive and very provocative clothing, actions and banners at these marches, this man's necklace seems minimal. This kind of thing is alarming.

RhododendronFlowers · 19/10/2025 09:26

I've just been watching Ed Milliband. He says that Aston is a no go area for Jews. I'm horrified, what's going on?
I'm not Jewish, no connection to Israel, but I am genuinely alarmed at what appears to be a rise in antisemitism in the UK. It's frightening enough to observe, it must be terrifying for Jewish people.

I can’t believe this is happening in the UK right now. Did we learn nothing from the last world war?

It is.

Marchers wearing face coverings appears to be ok. Why cover up your face unless carrying out illegal acts or ashamed of something.

Aston is a shithole. I am from a different religious minority but there are parts of Birmingham I think twice about going through. If I were Jewish I’d be even more terrified.
im sure someone will be along to tell me its all sweetness and light in merry old Birmingham but decades of lived experience here and I can safely say otherwise.

Thank you for that. It must be terrible for you, and I have no idea what's gone on, or why on earth, in the UK in 2025 this is happening.

What are you basing this on @Tigerbalmshark?

From the article - The man, who does not wish to be named for fear of his own security

Plus victim blaming there.

Echobelly · 18/10/2025 22:37

Uhm, I was at that protest, wearing a very visible Magen David, along with my husband wearing his kippah. No one was antagonised by this. My husband and I have attended several of these events and other events supporting Gaza while being 'visibly Jewish' and have only ever been warmly received by Muslims and Palestinian participants.

Which suggests the man's behaviour was the issue, not his religious symbol. I think this is the case of a foolish and inaccurate comment made by a policeman being picked up on as though it was the main point.

Papers like the Telegraph push stories like this because they want to push anti Islamic sentiment by playing on Jewish fears, while not actually caring at all about Jews unless they can use us for something.

Well I’ve heard plenty of accounts from Jewish people which make me believe that antisemitism has been on the rise in the UK and has become a very real problem.

I didn’t realise quite the extent of it until I listened to Shelagh Fogerty’s show on LBC a few weeks ago. People were ringing in and detailing what it’s like to live in the UK as a Jew. Many described being targeted simply for expressing their identity, whether through clothing, language, or community affiliation. A woman spoke of her child hiding their Jewish school uniform on the way to school to avoid abuse, while others described the unsettling normality of armed security outside synagogues and Jewish schools for protection. If you don’t believe me you can look it up and listen to it yourself. And I wouldn’t describe LBC as right-wing gutter press.

You might not have experienced it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
