To my amazement, last night I discovered that some posters on MN think that "radical Islam" means simply "Muslim" 😬

I wonder if this explains why so many are unconcerned about who might be pulling the strings behind the "peace" rallies that were first organised on 7 October? Do they know what radical Islam is, how powerful it is, that it is widely acknowledged as the greatest threat to UK national security, that its intentions are clearly stated, that it is 10000000% different than simply observing Muslim faith?

Palestine Action are planning a rally in central London on Saturday and hope to overwhelm the police presence. Is anyone concerned about this? I'm worried that the seeds of civil unrest are being sown, without it being entirely clear who is sowing them.

Of course. Yes, I was there for a service; I hadn't been in a bit and I wanted to go as I'll be on holiday next week, at a different synagogue after that, and then away again.

I still find attending a service a spiritual and meditative experience, and sharing ithat is meaningful. I like my dad's description, which is that even if you don't believe in God, there is a sense of 'immanence', the nearness of something bigger than yourself - and it's not something that's just for religious services, you might feel it at a music concert or a sports match. I agree with him that these things are related. And for Judaism, there is something special, for me at least, in the continuity of an ancient tradition.

It's also lovely to share family celebrations, like a bar mitzvah as there was today - unusual in August! And seeing friends and sometimes family - by coincidence, my MIL was there and sometimes my parents or my brother are at the same time as us as well.

Thanks for replying! I guess if family and friends also go then it becomes more of a community thing.

I suppose there are plenty of atheists who are happy to go to a carol service, sit in a church or even give something up for Lent.

People have more power without a criminal record so it might have been better for them to choose a different protest in support of the Palestinian cause.

Thelmaandloulou · 10/08/2025 10:37

Ofcourse, people have always managed to bring about change with government approved methods, right?

If you think an 83 year old retired priest should be punished for simply saying "i stand with Palestine Action' then you have gone bonkers.

Beachtastic · 10/08/2025 10:33

To those who oppose genocide and protest against it.

That includes the thousands of Israelis who protested against their genocidal government last night.

That's the 83 year old priest who is already awaiting trial for attacking a rare copy of Magna Carta with a hammer, right?

Thelmaandloulou · 10/08/2025 10:43

The next protest there will be maybe double or triple the amount. How many people will they continue to charge? Thousands?

Ridiculous.

Seriously though, can you explain why protestors can't just join a different protest in support of the Palestinian cause?

Why this one, when they knew beforehand it would be treated like a criminal offence and they risked getting a criminal record?

I think the 83 year old retired priest has the same agency as anyone else to make decisions for themselves and take the consequences. They know that PA is a proscribed terrorist organisation in the UK and it wouldn't be fair to punish others like young men protesting, for example and not them - just because they happen to be a retired priest.

Beachtastic · 10/08/2025 10:49

I think if people are desperately anxious to signal to the world that they are "on the right side of history" they should be very cautious about representing a group that organised the first London rally on 7 October 2023. Now why does that date ring a bell...? 🤔

That was the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, not Palestine Action though?

I mean, neither are great, but one is a proscribed terrorist organisation.

Will no one rid me of this turbulant priest? What a trouble maker and nuisance.

More than a nuisance if you’re destroying priceless history/art.

Yes, sorry, the boundaries are somewhat blurred!

Yesterday's rally was organised by the PSC too, no? So joining it, whether you support Palestine Action or not, is kind of lending support to something rather more aggressive than its stated purpose?

Interesting, it's like you are all waiting to pounce at the first person who disagrees with your views. Some of you don't actually care, you just want a fight. Maybe go out get some fresh air and enjoy the pleasant weather we are having.

Good day!

No answer about the sledgehammer attack then?

Well it was only the glass casing around the magna carta that she in fact damaged, before she was apprehended by security.

She claims that she never intended to damage the Magna Carta itself.

I tend to believe her but still ... she is engaging in criminal activity and should be punished like anyone else would be.

She clearly intends to be arrested. The attack on Magna Carta was for Just Stop Oil, this one for Palestine Action. A retirement hobby.

Seriously, she needs to get out less.

JamesMacGill · 10/08/2025 11:13

I think one day psychologists will study the effect of Gaza and its optics on the Western population. I have never, ever seen this reaction to a conflict we are not specifically involved in; or one we have actually (I was quite little for the Stop the War March but I don’t remember people having themselves arrested in the hundreds to protest their cause, smashing up shop fronts, damaging works of art/history, etc).

I’m convinced it’s directly linked to self loathing and a pervasive belief that the ultimate symbol of left wing allegiance is to support Islamic countries in their fight against the West (despite the fact they are far more right wing than we have ever been). Throw into the mix the glamour and self righteousness of Antifa etc, and you have a movement which is incredibly ego-driven and fashionable, especially given the likes of Kneecap ‘fighting the authorities’ (twits).

I fully support a ceasefire, aid to the Palestinians, and Netanyahu to go on trial for war crimes so we can establish exactly what has taken place. But blindly cheering for the creation of a Sharia state is pure suicidal insanity. I think they do it because they know the West will ultimately put itself out to protect them when shit goes down re terrorism.

Twiglets1 · 10/08/2025 09:33

No and I think that would be overkill for those that were peaceful… a criminal record is punishment enough.

Absolutely this. A criminal record will surely put a bit of a dampener on their weekend protesting hobbies.

Love how Amnesty International think the arrests are disproportionate. Tough! If you support a terrorist organisation that is illegal so you'll be arrested. I'm pleased that the met didn't demonstrate any 2 tier policing here.

noblegiraffe · 10/08/2025 11:19

I'm quite interested in the wholesale shift from Just Stop Oil to Gaza (as exemplified by the aforementioned priest). It's not like the climate has been saved?

They change their placards depending on what's on trend.
