UK to recognise Palestine as a state in September

"Unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation".

Source: Reuters

It is largely symbolic but it does mean the tide is turning!

Also: interesting to see that they frame it as largely contingent on Israeli behaviour

Israel does the complete minimum to pass checks. They’ll do a minimum before then and UK won’t recognise Palestine. I am so heart broken for the Palestinians, they don’t deserve any of what has been happening to
them since before the creation of Israel.

I mean the Palestinian population is about 5 million...do you really think it's likely the majority of them will be killed in the next four weeks?

Oh so you don’t dispute the point about Israel’s intentions. Enough said.

Comprehension a problem too I see.

I was responding to this..

If Israel wipe out the majority of the Palestinian population before September (as they seem intent on doing) recognising Palestine as a state won’t mean much at that point

Whatever the intentions are or aren't...do you think it's likely that the majority of a population of five million will die in four weeks? Yes or no?

Netanyahu’s government starves children. They disgust me.

Are you trying to justify supporting terrorism? That’s an awful look.

Don't be ridiculous. Supporting a state for Palestinians is not supporting terrorism.

Kakeandkake · 29/07/2025 18:49

And Netanyahu's government does starve children.

Gansy · 29/07/2025 18:50

… They haven’t said what measures Israel needs to meet, and whatever they are, Israel have until September until UK make a decision. Meanwhile there a whole month for further atrocities.

I am deeply ashamed of this country.

Starmer is a mealy mouthed reptile. It's well seen he doesn't dare disobey his masters.

Who do you think his "masters" are then?

Lindos1 · 29/07/2025 19:07

Commit mass murder/ torture/ rape/ hostage taking, then get what you want. Yay!

Lonelycrab · 29/07/2025 19:09

Spineless from Starmer.

Another 5 weeks before a frankly insignificant country decides to slightly modify its stance with no material effect, and meanwhile, a significant proportion of Gazas population will starve. Yay go us.

And some of the posters on this thread should be ashamed of themselves.

problemsinthemind · 29/07/2025 19:10

But we still supply arms to Israel ? So what’s the point in anything he has said.

beelegal · 29/07/2025 19:11

This is about Starmer not losing his backbenchers to Corbyn. It’s all political, he is trying hard to appease them.

smallglassbottle · 29/07/2025 19:15

Comedycook · 29/07/2025 18:56

Why the US of course. Who else would they be?

The bit that is genuinely impressive - albeit in all the wrong ways - is how he has somehow found the one position that is supremely unpopular both with supporters of the Palestinians and those of Israel, mind.

Sadly, and misguidedly, driven by Trump in an attempt to appease and toe the line.

Kakeandkake · 29/07/2025 19:30

Amongst the conditions he laid out is asking the Israeli government to commit to a peace solution that will lead to a two state solution. This is whilst Netanyahu's government are talking about annexing Gaza and the West Bank. Ofcourse they will never agree to it, so then what will Starmer do? Will he actually recognise a Palestinian state?

Mercurial123 · 29/07/2025 19:30

Dibbs01 · 29/07/2025 17:05

Labour support terrorism. Starmer disgusts me.

So you're good with genocide, forced starvation and the destruction of Palestine?

PaxAeterna · 29/07/2025 20:02

PhilippaGeorgiou · 29/07/2025 17:48

75% of the UN already recognise Palestine as a state. So I doubt that Israel's government will give any greater value in more countries doing so. The only thing that will make a real difference is Israel recognising Palestine as a state - and I cannot see that happening because I cannot see Hamas stepping away, no matter what the incentive.

You are absolutely correct that, that is the only thing that would change things on the ground. But it is not insignificant. It matters when Members of the G7 recognise Israel. It could also impact legal matters and trade agreements down the line, like trading with Israeli businesses who trade from occupied territory.

This statement is just very strong words again; using it as diplomatic pressure on Israel. Very disappointing that this seems to be their only action.

Pretty obvious as you say that the Israeli govt have no interest in a 2ss, so let’s seee how these demands from KS bring any meaningful change with the situation; my guess, not much.

Gansy · 29/07/2025 20:09

Would recognising countries not have jurisdiction to enter Gaza if granted by Gaza?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/07/2025 20:23

Dibbs01 · 29/07/2025 18:47

You know I am not. You are trying to divert attention from the atrocities of Israel, which are condemned by almost everyone. I don’t know how you have the nerve to continue justifying it.

Being supportive of a nation who elected a terrorist government which then carried out grotesque acts of terrorism and then portraying them as victims is reprehensible.

The UK needs to clamp down on all terrorist supporters. We should start by jailing everyone linked to Palestine Action.

gingerelephant · 29/07/2025 20:45

Keir Starmer's statement shows in my view a confused policy and is ambiguous. Either the govt recognise Palestine or they don't, I do not believe your acceptance of a state depends upon the actions of another. I cannot think of any other situation where this has been the case.
