mass strike?

Why cant we all go on strike re israels genocode? Obviously we don't want NHS to collapse and certain infrastructure has to keep moving but how are we not all screaming from the top of our lungs about Palestinians being starved and slaughtered. Money/loss of is where it will hurt those in power, sadly so many people don't seem to care or think this has anything to do with them but I'd like to think that at least half the UK population is as utterly distraught as I am about this. If everyone chose not to go into work as a form of protest surely the government would stand up and listen. Peaceful protest doesn't seem to cut it 🙄 I know it's not as simple as this and would take a LOT of planning, and not everyone would be paid for going on strike which is a privilege to even do so but I'm in utter despair about how this will ever stop and radical action seems needed!

Also out of curiosity, are people boycotting the likes of coca cola/Starbucks etc and those linked with supporting this Genocide?

Maybe a general strike about the state of the UK instead

HobnobsChoice · 23/07/2025 17:24

You don't understand the grounds on which strike action can be called do you? There are specific grounds for industrial action being taken. It has to relate to your employer and you can't strike in sympathy The Unions have to ballot for it. Then you have to reach an agreed level of union members voting for the strike and then you take the action. Seeing as local government workers didn't reach the threshold for strike action over pay just this week, you think that they will vote for and then strike and lose a day's pay even if it was a legal strike?

OK, if you are purposefully buying dates from Israel etc, can you tell me why? I of course condemn the hostages losing their lives who were taken in October, of course. But are you truly unable to feel anything for the tens of thousands of babies and children being starved right now, and those who have been brutally murdered intentionally and so viciously?

What? Did you not know about the other 1200 slaughtered, raped, tortured and mutilated and the 7000 injured?

All the rockets continuously fired into Israel that only prevented thousands more deaths due to Israel having to create an unprecedented defence system no one other country in the world has to have due to all the attacks from Palestinians going back decades?

Or was that not enough to start a war in your book?

Wars end when one side surrenders or a ceasefire agreement is reached. Hamas doesn’t want to surrender and release the remaining 50 hostages, and Israel will only accept a ceasefire agreement which includes Hamas surrendering and releasing the 50 hostages (quite rightly), so why is your OP so one sided?

You should be ashamed to say that you no longer care about Israelis killed by Hamas. Assuming you are talking about citizens not soldiers, they are no more responsible for the actions of the IDF than Palestinian civilians are responsible for Hamas.

I would never say I don’t care about innocent Palestinian civilians being killed.

But the boycotting dates thing is nonsense.

So you're saying October 7th was justified?

Very simplistic and inaccurate to say the least.

Most people won't strike as they're on the right side. Hamas and Islamist extremism have no place in a modern world. They need to be defeated and a moderate democracy put in place. That won't happen while Islamist terrorists are in charge.

Arguably no more ridiculous than people denying themselves products they do want as if the economy of Israel is reliant on dates.

Thanks for your concern! I love dates, so don’t worry about that.

I do feel isolated in my workplace in some respects, as it is taken for granted that ‘we’ all agree about ME affairs and as it happens, I don’t agree, and I don’t go to work to talk international politics, so I keep my mouth shut. I thought that was clear from my somewhat facetious posts, but hey ho.

Its not ridiculous if people choose not to buy something because they are taking a moral stand on something they really care about. I mean I get that, its not unusual. But "secretly" buying something just to spite colleagues is madness! I mean they won't even know so whats the point??!

What’s the point in boycotting dates? There’s no point to some people buying less dates & some people buying more dates. It’s all pointless apart from making people feel a bit satisfied about their choices.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 23/07/2025 18:10

You have to be kidding.

Are you also striking over human rights abuses in china? Sudan? Just Israel?

Utterly ridiculous suggestion

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 23/07/2025 18:13

Well said @Naomival

I make a point of buying Israeli products when available. They're our ally and a beacon of democracy and liberal thinking, women's rights etc in the ME.

funny to see the obvious link between pro Palestinian nuts and the far left illustrated by this thread. Mass strike indeed. Laughable.

Israelis as a whole are committing genocide are they?

Why are Israelis responsible for their government’s actions?

Why should anyone care about Palestinians being killed after what Hamas did on Oct 7th (which was an actual genocide) by your thinking?

Because that would make things so much better, just like it did in the 70's.

You don't get the difference between doing something ftom a moral standpoint and doing something to "secretly" spite someone? I mean pp could at least grow a spine and tell her colleagues shes buying the dates just to spite them, obviously that would still be weird though! I can't get over her buying a product she probably doesn't even want because she thinks she's point scoring over a colleague 🤦‍♀️

There is a genocide and mass starvation.

Shame on the Israeli government and their supporters.

In this country we are free to boycott Israeli goods!

Shame on Hamas and their utter disregard for the lives of their own population.
