Conflict in the Middle East

Protest Greek island.

PaxAeterna · 23/07/2025 12:20

I initially thought that they have been stopped from entering by the Greek authorities but it seems the ship itself made a call to move on. The protest itself was peaceful with no violence reported.

Have mixed thoughts about this one: I don’t really like people protesting at people who ultimately can’t do anything about the situation. On the other hand making life uncomfortable for Israeli tourists inadvertently puts pressure on the Israeli government.

Israeli cruise ship turned away from Greek island by Gaza war protest

Tourists greeted on Syros by banner saying Stop the Genocide and prevented from disembarking

Although it does kind of make the point that it isn’t just white middle aged women, with no idea of the politics, who are protesting about the genocide and starvation which is happening in Palestine. Which can only be a good thing.

BelleHathor · 23/07/2025 12:54

I think it indicates the depth of feeling against what they're seeing happening in Palestine. Ordinary citizens across the World are frustrated, angry and upset.

Unfortunately when International Law is shredded so comprehensively, arrogantly and openly and politicians, courts and the media fail to hold Israel to account. People will react in different ways.

I don't agree with conflating all Israeli's with Netanyahu, though ironically the people who continually conflated all Palestinians with Hamas have provided this justification in many minds.

PaxAeterna · 23/07/2025 12:58

No I agree @BelleHathor . I don’t agree with conflating all Israelis with their government.

But I do find it difficult to feel sympathetic towards Israeli’s experiencing a hiccup in their all inclusive cruise holiday while their government commits these atrocities.

Bizarre post
I've never heard anyone say that...
How do you know the demographic of the protesters?

Well it looks like a fairly wide demographic looking at the photos. Maybe more people looking aged 25 - 35. Hard to say for sure.

We shouldn't punish ordinary citizens for their government.

But whilst people turn a blind eye to the connecting punishment of the people of Gaza, I'd rather we focus our criticism of that.

Staying silent when babies are denied formula and limbs are amputated without anasthetic, but getting grumpy at wealthy tourists facing a protest seems beyond crass.

LipstickLessons · 23/07/2025 14:26

Do we know that were all just ordinary civillians? With the news that 2 Israeli suspected war criminals were questioned by Belgian police after attending a festival there I don't think that it is a given that these are all civillians?

Crystalight · 23/07/2025 14:35

According to the Times of Israel:

The protest was organized by a group of the island’s residents who said on social media that the purpose of the demonstration was to “raise their fists in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.”

I think we can assume that the protesters had no more knowledge of the cruise participants than we do.

they were targeted as an Israeli cruise rather than because someone from the IDF was on board.

The world loses its moral compass where Israel is concerned.

No, it is not okay to treat citizens of a country like this. Doesn't matter which country.

People seem to pretend they don't know this, but it'll eventually come around and bite society in the arse.

Crystalight · 23/07/2025 18:31

Well, looks like the boat was allowed to dock in Limassol in Cyprus, so crisis averted.

BakedAlaska12 · 23/07/2025 19:01

It’s disgusting yet unsurprising. To show that level of threat to Israeli people is outrageous.

Only a day or two ago an Israeli Jew was targeted at Reubens cafe in London. All she was doing was dining there when a pro-Palestinian woman came and publicly attacked her.

so no, it’s not okay that Israeli holiday makers are being targeted by people.

so no, it’s not okay that Israeli holiday makers are being targeted by people.

Is this because:

  1. Israeli people are somehow more special than anyone else and deserve special treatment, or
  2. because no one should be treated badly because of decisions their government make?

I think your point 1 says more about you than any one else.

Someone publicly attacking someone personal is completely wrong. I don’t think that is comparable to this.

What do you think? Its obvious isnt it?

I think this is shocking and disgusting and I have a lot of negative things to say about the Israeli government in general

This is mob mentality and vigilantism. Very threatening to the safety of Jewish people.

Cadenza12 · 23/07/2025 19:28

People feel powerless in the face of such atrocity when those who could do something don't. It's certainly a high profile protest and peaceful. There's an apparent groundswell of public opinion.

BakedAlaska12 · 23/07/2025 19:29

It’s not peaceful if it’s making a ship not dock because it’s going to become unsafe for Israeli people.

Crystalight · 23/07/2025 19:29

Well according to the press, the people of Syros held a peaceful demonstration. However, some press do state that some Israelis managed to leave the boat and shout “Turkey will fuck you”. Which is not very nice. I’m sorry that you feel that this is mob mentality and vigilantism. But maybe Israelis should also look internally and decide whether they are holding themselves in the best conduct.

EasyTouch · 23/07/2025 19:41

Let me see if there is an overlap between posters on this thread high and low key agreeing that Israelis should be protested against and any OPs protesting the UK and other governments allowing refuge for many who were responsible for the Rwandan Genocide.
Dictionary definition of Genocide.
Not population suffering on the losing side of a war started by their leaders.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki- not a genocide.
Russian deaths in WW2- not a genocide.
German post war suffering- not a genocide.
Four centuries of Transatlantic slave journeys and trade. A Genocide that will never be called one. The targeting , kidnapping, erasure of original language and culture at pain of death, rapes, buck breeding, free labour that enabled half of Europe into civilisation for its populations that would not exist otherwise against people who did not trouble them.
War is an ugly thing.

To start one and lose and still refuse to surrender does not give the supporters of the perpetrators the right to name it a genocide, just because the victims are winning against the perps.

Hitler threw Germans under the bus instead of surrendering and specifically left Berliners to it as the Russians advanced, pissed at what they had to lose in order to defeat the Germans/ Axis powers on the Eastern front.

Nobody accused those Russians of Genocide after the cutting up that they did in Berlin.

You made this claim on another thread but still haven't provided a link to back it up.

Would the forcible removal under the guise of voluntary emigration of an entire population constitute genocide?
