I have friends in Qatar who received shelter in place notices from the US embassy earlier, then repeated by the UK Foreign Office. Schools are shut tomorrow and they’ve just closed the airspace. Pretty worried now.

Ominous

hyggetyggedotorg · 23/06/2025 16:49

Definitely sounds worrying. I wouldn’t know exactly what the significance is but obviously intelligence has been received that something is planned.

loverofpants · 23/06/2025 16:52

It is definitely worrying. We’re in the UAE and I’m more worried than I have been in the 12 years I’ve been here.

AtomicBlondeRose · 23/06/2025 16:52

There is a US airbase about 20km from where they live which isn’t great. But I guess all they can do is keep their heads down and wait.

:(

I'm guessing this is the reason perhaps?

Qatar is home to the largest US military base in the Middle East, Al Udeid Air Base. About 8,000 US citizens live there, according to the State Department.

AtomicBlondeRose · 23/06/2025 17:07

Yes, that’s probably it, although the US have apparently moved nearly all their aircraft and personnel off it.

I was sceptical when I saw this on Fox News but now I’m worried

On flight radar you can now seeing all diverted. Nothing taking off and landing apart from military.

everythingthelighttouches · 23/06/2025 17:25

Could it be that the Iranians tipped off the US to avoid casualties but still appear to have a show of force??

ButterfliesnWaterfalls · 23/06/2025 17:26

What did the other countries expect?

It’s okay for Israel and US to attack Iran and Iran won’t respond?

It seems things will escalate in the region.

ninjahamster · 23/06/2025 17:27

Guessing there’s intelligence that the us base may be a target. Was really hoping Iran might not retaliate but then that’s quite naive I guess!

TooBigForMyBoots · 23/06/2025 17:29
Sad
AtomicBlondeRose · 23/06/2025 17:33

Qatar and Iran are friendly so nobody there seriously thought they were at direct risk of attack.

OP posts:
babasaclover · 23/06/2025 17:35

I can’t see one Arab state bombing another, if they do then the whole world is fucked

hyggetyggedotorg · 23/06/2025 17:37

Iran may see it as an attack on the US rather than Qatar if they plan to only attack the airbase?

Hoping, maybe very naively, that’s it’s just a threat.

Gattopardo · 23/06/2025 17:38

Planes seem to be giving Prince Sultan airbase in Saudi a wide berth too. No idea if that’s usual.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/06/2025 17:44

Sky News are reporting that explosions have been heard over Doha in Qatar

AtomicBlondeRose · 23/06/2025 17:45

They've just been watching the missiles get shot down
