The Children Starve First

I wanted to open a space to reflect on something that’s been haunting me.

I've noticed in reports from Gaza that children are dying of starvation at shocking rates — even more than adults. At first I wondered how this could be, given that children need less food than adults. But I’ve since learned that children are actually the first to die in famine situations.

Here’s why:

  • Children have smaller bodies but higher nutritional needs per kilogram, especially during growth spurts. They need regular, balanced intake to maintain development.
  • Malnutrition hits them faster — their energy stores are smaller, and their bodies have less ability to adapt to a lack of nutrients.
  • Their immune systems weaken rapidly, making them far more likely to die from diseases that an adult body might fight off.
  • Infants and toddlers can’t chew tougher emergency rations or go without water as long, and breastfed babies suffer if their mothers are dehydrated or malnourished.
  • The UN says that in every famine, the first to die are the smallest and weakest.
The stories of babies dying in their mothers’ arms — not from bombs or bullets but from hunger — are unbearable. I can’t stop thinking about the terror and anguish these parents must feel. How helpless it must be to watch your child fade away slowly, knowing you have nothing left to give them.

I know we talk about current events, about war, politics, sides — but surely, we can unite around this: no child should starve to death in their mother’s arms.

I've condemned Netanyahu and the starving of children. Not sure what you are reading or making up.

Or you could go back and read the posts in context.

Heartbreaking. I can't imagine the pain of helplessly watching your child be purposefully starved of food and medicine. The pain of knowing that there are 100s and 100s of aid trucks lined up that could save your daughter but your occupiers won't let them in because it isn't part of their plan to 'cleanse' you. It's horrifying. It's revolting. I've lost hope in humanity now. World leaders sat on their hands, not even a small sanction on the country openly starving people of the necessities for life, openly speaking of their plans to lock Palestinians in camps before they 'cleanse' the area and take it for themselves.

If it helps you with your hope in humanity, people have been doing this to each other forever. This is us. The worst of us. What Israel is doing, many have done before, and I'm sure many will do again. Yes, despite the Geneva Convention. This is what humans do.

Im not saying its ok or excusing it. I'm just saying is what we've always been, so there's no need to lose hope. There's always hope.

You’re minimising it. Oh it happens all the time!

You just viewing what I'm saying through your own lens.

Humans have always commited atrocities. We make rules for our societies so we can all live in close proximity but the animal is always there in some if not all of us.

Mentioning the existence of such human nature traits as a ‘it happens’ on a thread such as this is
minimising the current atrocities being committed by the Israeli Government.

Its never acceptable to let an imbedded animalistic behaviour raise its head. It may be in some of us but a Government and the IDF is more than one person.
They all have an opportunity to stop this and yet some even deny it’s happening

What is wrong with people
It’s Evil

kirinm · 27/05/2025 12:59

But Hamas.
From the Guardian live feed
10.04 BST
Thousands of Israelis on Monday joined a state-funded march through the Muslim quarter of the Old City in Jerusalem, where large groups chanted racist slogans including “Gaza is ours”, “death to the Arabs” and “may their villages burn”.
The annual march, paid for and promoted by the Jerusalem city government, celebrates Israel’s capture and occupation of East Jerusalem and its holy sites in the war of 1967. The Israeli takeover is not recognised internationally.

My point is that-
Its there in Hamas
Its there in the extreme right in Israel
Its in the Houthis
It was there in the British in India ( amongst others )
It was there in Vietnam
It was there in Rwanda

I could go on and on.

I'd go further and say it might be there in me if I'd watched my own children hacked to death or slowly starved.

I dont say what Hamas did, or what the Israeli right is threatening to do is right. Of course it's not. I also don't say all atrocities are equivalent. I just say the darkness is there in all of us, Israel is not uniquely evil as many on this thread would have us believe. And humans have got themselves out of bloodier situations than this in the past, and we can do it again.

Unfortunately violence sometimes has to be met with violence. Its finding the balance between getting rid of the darkness without succumbing to the darkness ourselves that is the challenge.

I'd argue that releasing the hostages is time critical too.

As is the release of Palestinian prisoners - many who are children, held in administrative detention and extended multiple times, for no apparent reason, without due legal support.

And yes op, the world can stop this now. Not sure how to answer our kids and grandkids when they ask about it

How can the world stop it?

Israel is a sovereign nation and can make its own choices about its national security and defence.

Other nations can apply pressure as they see fit, which is exactly what is happening.

Or would you prefer we use military force to stop Israel?

2 parties can stop this. Israel and Hamas. I know who I'd rather see drop their weapons and relinquish power. You?

maltravers · 27/05/2025 13:36

No doubt Hamas and its crazy jihadis also think they are meeting violence with violence and so the vicious circle continues. The death toll in Gaza or reported to be 50,000- 60,000 people. Enough, please! I also feel sorry for the Israeli youth called up and required to partake in this.

Sanctions, sanctions and more sanctions. Should have happened a long time ago coupled with halting of arms exports to Israel.

Should Israel be allowed to keep the funding for rockets for the Iron Dome?

I would say if course, they are a crucial defence system. People don't want innocent Israelis killed as much as they don't want innocent Palestinians killed.
It bothers me greatly that Israel have the power and control to starve a population that needs to be stopped and if sanctions can help it must be done. There has to be a red line here imo Israel has crossed it long ago but their allies need to wake up

A growing number of reservists are refusing to serve now because they don’t agree with what Israel is doing

Israel is behaving worse than a prescribed terrorist organisation, at minimum sanctions must be applied and arms no longer sold or sent.

Rather than wringing your hands and saying “why don’t they do something” perhaps it’s time to write to your MP and/or to the prime minister and say you would like decisive action to be taken stop Israel from continuing blocking aid and killing Palestinians. Shout it on every platform you can.

True there is a lot of action that can be taken. Many people have been writing to MPs with no avail. But we need to keep going.

Fuck me the pictures coming out of Rafah are awful.

YourOnMute · 27/05/2025 23:01

I have been seeing videos of settlers intimidating people in Jerusalem. Settlers attacking around Nablus. This is aside from anything happening in Gaza, where approx. 54,000 people have died I think.
How can any democratic country stand over what the "settlers" are doing: its citizens attacking other people? Killing livestock, burning property, intimidating and forcing people to leave? Attacking people on the street? Mobs singing hateful songs? Bullying women just going about their business?
What the hell?

UsernamesAreTaken · 28/05/2025 09:41

Wow, the arrogance and anti palestinian posts from some people is really sad. Ordinary Palestinians value education and community.
