The Children Starve First

I wanted to open a space to reflect on something that’s been haunting me.

I've noticed in reports from Gaza that children are dying of starvation at shocking rates — even more than adults. At first I wondered how this could be, given that children need less food than adults. But I’ve since learned that children are actually the first to die in famine situations.

Here’s why:

  • Children have smaller bodies but higher nutritional needs per kilogram, especially during growth spurts. They need regular, balanced intake to maintain development.
  • Malnutrition hits them faster — their energy stores are smaller, and their bodies have less ability to adapt to a lack of nutrients.
  • Their immune systems weaken rapidly, making them far more likely to die from diseases that an adult body might fight off.
  • Infants and toddlers can’t chew tougher emergency rations or go without water as long, and breastfed babies suffer if their mothers are dehydrated or malnourished.
  • The UN says that in every famine, the first to die are the smallest and weakest.
The stories of babies dying in their mothers’ arms — not from bombs or bullets but from hunger — are unbearable. I can’t stop thinking about the terror and anguish these parents must feel. How helpless it must be to watch your child fade away slowly, knowing you have nothing left to give them.

I know we talk about current events, about war, politics, sides — but surely, we can unite around this: no child should starve to death in their mother’s arms.

Around 450 protesters [Israeli] called for an end to the war and the return of the hostages at the Sha'ar Negev intersection, near the border with Gaza. Protesters held signs and pictures of children killed in the Gaza Strip.
(Haaretz)

I saw this on Channel 4 News. The Israeli protesters were holding up many enlarged photographs of little, killed Gazan children. One young man was an IDF officer refusing to fight anymore even though he will be punished. A counter protester who came up shouting at them was led away by police.

Haven't seen that many starving Hamas foot soldiers. Obviously Hamas are making sure the food reaches the 'right' people first.

Possibly, though I still see a lot of sympathy for Israel's situation.
Neighbouring Arab leaders were disgusted by what they were shown of 7/10 and would probably have dealt with the situation more brutally, with no risk of dissenting voices internally.
Slightly surprised that hamas leaders are managing to avoid the shit sticking to them especially after the remarks about breeding more martyrs.

Hamas leaders are getting some shit but more from within Gaza by Palestinians than on UK sites like Mumsnet. Article from the BBC about protests in Gaza:

Palestinians have taken to the streets in southern Gaza for a third day to protest against Hamas.

Hundreds of demonstrators were seen in videos posted on social media calling for an end to the war and for the removal of the armed group from Gaza. "Out! Out! Out! All of Hamas, out!" they chanted.

Speaking out against Hamas can be dangerous in Gaza and threats circulated on journalists' WhatsApp groups on Tuesday, forbidding them from publishing any "negative news that could affect the morale of the people".

Activists said young people started the protests on Monday and were joined by others on their way to get food from community kitchens, who were still holding their pots.

The protesters directed their anger at Hamas's leadership after an interview with senior official Sami Abu Zuhri circulated on social media.
Speaking on a podcast which originally aired in late March, he said that the war with Israel was "eternal", adding: "We will rebuild the houses and produce dozens more babies for each martyr."
Videos from the protests in Khan Younis show young men criticizing Hamas for selling their "blood for a dollar… To those with Hamas, be aware the people of Gaza will dig your grave".

@Twiglets1
It would be great if Hamas could be eradicated from Gaza.

But somehow I don’t think that this would stop the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. After all - it seems to be happening in the WB with no action from police. Do you think this is going to promote peace with Palestinians?

Twiglets1 · 24/05/2025 15:30

@Stripes56 I fear the war has emboldened Netanyahu & his government to the extent that they believe they will be able to implement Trumps plan or a version of it.

Personally I doubt the Israel leaders can imagine a peaceful two state solution after the war. Even before October 7th there was a lack of trust, hence all the money Israel spent on defensive measures like the Iron Dome. But now Hamas have managed to get past their defences & massacre 1,200 Israeli citizens… I think that’s the end to any hope that Palestine & Israel can co-exist peacefully.

Hope I’m wrong though.

I don't know why Egypt doesn't do more anyway.

Sorry I don't buy that pick.they would never shoot down USA, UK planes

Then you are very naive
They have literally shot dead British and European aid workers and charity workers even way way before Oct 7
They do not value any human life
If you say anything in support of Palestinians you are immediately anti- semitic
Sick of Israel and it's choke hold on the West
End genocide now

Igotjelly · 24/05/2025 17:17

Anyone interested in this issue I’d recommend the latest episode of the Behind the Lines podcast with Arthur Snell (former diplomat) and Michael Stephens of RUSI. Very measured discussion of the use of aid as a political tool.

Igotjelly · 23/05/2025 17:32

The shit may well have stuck more to Hamas (as it should of course) had the Israeli government’s response not been so horrifically barbaric. The whataboutary on this thread are unreal. Should Oct 7 have happened, absolutely not. Should justice be served, yes. Should that just look like massacring women and children, absolutely fucking not.

Those shouting about us not blaming Hamas enough, do you honestly think the actions of the Israeli government and army are justified? Do you think the actions of settlers are justified? Do you think the arbitrary detention of men without charge is justified?

Some actually do. Unquestionable support for Israel. Endlessly giving them the benefit of the doubt when all the evidence says otherwise. I think some posters here probably do support the eradication of gazans.

And how many are children.

Films of starving babies on Sky news tonight. There must be a special place in hell for people causing that.

What happens when two comics artists ‘meet on the page’ to explore the tragedies of the Israel-Gaza war? Art Spiegelman, best known for his Pulitzer prize-winning Holocaust memoir Maus, and Joe Sacco, author of bestselling graphic reportage Palestine, grapple with the ongoing crisis

I think we all agree on that.

What we disagree on is who is responsible for the suffering of civilians including babies - Netanyahu/IDF or Hamas.

Clearly there are plenty of hardliners who put their head in the sand, believe every Israeli Govn and IDF lie and piece of propaganda unquestionably

Your comment here is a disgrace !! @quantumbutterfly

Im not reporting it, I think people need to see these sort of comments

mmm….who could that be.
Oh yes
Netanyahu and the Israeli Government.
